FIBA World Championships USA vs Russia Kevin durant led all scores with 33 in a usa route 89-79.After a bogus whistle blew up a US fast break in the second quarter with Russia hanging tight, some might have started to have flashbacks to the controversial gold medal game that took place 38 years ago to the day. But Kevin Durant and company weren't going to let a repeat of the 1972 Olympic Games happen as Team USA advances to the semifinals with a 89-79 win over Russia. Durant led the way with 33 points on 11-19 shooting with Thunder teammate Russell Westbrook keying a big third quarter with 12 points and three steals off the bench. Late in the second quarter though, things weren't going well for Team USA. Russia was hitting shots, outrebounding the Americans and held a 35-30 lead. But just the way it was planned, Durant took over igniting a 12-0 that helped the US go ahead 42-35 and secure a lead they would never lose. The US did a splendid job of taking care of the ball, turning it over only eight times and only three times in the second half. That kind of ball security was necessary too, as Russia was playing smart upset-style basketball. Running quality halfcourt sets, hitting shots and defending at a high level. If the US had gotten sloppy, this could have been a different result. Westbrook was part of a big third quarter that saw the US take complete control of the game. Westbrook had gambled some in the first half on defense, but in the third came up with three steals, all leading to run-out dunks. He was ...

Lithuania - Argentina Highlights (FIBA World Championship 2010 Turkey) ISTANBUL (2010 FIBA World Championship) -- Lithuania stunned Argentina 104-85 to close the Quarterfinals of the FIBA World Championship at the Sinar Erdem Dome. Now Lithuania plays the USA in the semifinals on Saturday, September 11. Lithuania was head to head with Argentina in the first couple of minutes but their sticky man to man defense, focused on Scola and that didn't allow any passes inside nor any comfortable shots, gave them all the confidence to start their run. The Lithuanians took off with an 8-0 run to be up 17-10 after a basket by Robertas Javkotas with 4:06 left. Then Argentina came back with a 5-0 run that finished with an amazing steal, behind the back dribble and dunk with a foul by Hernan Jasen with 1:48 to close the game 21-17. That play by Jasen was supposed to be the spark that the Argentineans needed, but the Lithuanians never lost their composure and continued to hit from behind the arc after a three pointer by Tomas Delininkaitis and then a two point field goal by him finished the first quarter up 28-18. In the second quarter it was when it all fell apart for Argentina as Lithuania kept their balanced attack, perfect shooting from long distance as they connected their first eight three pointers with success and a suffocating defense. Argentina tried to find Scola, who only had two points in the first quarter, and responded with some made shots. The Argentineans never made a three pointer in the first half and they went down 50-30 after a tip-in at ...

Lithuania - New Zealand Highlights (FIBA World Championship 2010 Turkey) IZMIR (FIBA World Championship) - A stunning 13-2 run to start the second quarter and back-breaking shooting at key moments from Linas Kleiza has secured a hard fought 92-79 win for Lithuania over New Zealand in the opening game of Group D in Izmir. Kleiza was masterful with 27 points and 8 rebounds for Lithuania, while Paulius Jankunas (15 points) and veteran Jonas Maciulis (14 points) were also prominent. The star of the show was Kirk Penney, who scored 37 points on 16/20 free throw shooting despite receiving constant attention from the Lithuanian defence. Mika Vukona was excellent with 19 points, 9 rebounds and 3 assists, while Thomas Abercrombie pulled in 11 rebounds to go with 7 points for New Zealand. The first quarter was a high quality affair, with both teams executing their offence to perfection -- New Zealand through ball movement to free up shooters, Lithuania through a varied series of screens to get post ups and penetration -- with the Europeans taking a 25-24 lead to the break. Superstars Penney and Kleiza scored the first baskets of the game for their teams, and that would set the trend for the game. Penney in particular was superb, racking up 10 points for the quarter and 17 for the half. The second quarter saw Lithuania step up their defensive physicality, forcing numerous Tall Blacks turnovers as they peeled of their match winning run behind the shooting of Kleiza, to lead 50-34 at half time. The third quarter was New Zealand's. After trailing 20-12 in ...

FIBA Basketball World Cup 2010 - "Giant Get-Together" Turkey will be the host for the most important basketball event on the planet. It is the first time that this youthful and dynamic nation hosts a championship of such magnitude. And Turkey's fans are ready to fully embrace the biggest ever sports event ever assigned to their country. The 2010 FIBA World Championship for Men in Turkey could well see the same strong USA team that triumphed during the Olympics in Beijing. The question nevertheless remains whether they can reproduce the same winning form and result. Indeed, the level in international basketball has never been higher and the competition never tougher.

FIBA WC 2010 Turkey 1/4 Final Serbia - Spain 92 - 89 Teodosic hits the clutch Three from Downtown ISTANBUL (2010 FIBA World Championship) -- Serbia beat Spain 92-89 to book their place in the semi-finals of the 2010 FIBA World Championship. Milos Teodosic buried a three-pointer from the top of the key with 3.1 seconds left to break an 89-89 tie and Spain could not get off on the next possession. The win saw Dusan Ivkovic's side avenge their defeat at the hands of the Spaniards in the final of last year's EuroBasket in Spain and return to the last four in the FIBA World Championship for the first time since 2002. Meanwhile the loss means that Spain fail to make it to the semi-final stages of a major international competition for the first time since 2004. Early on, Serbia rode the hot hand of Nemanja Bjelica and Novica Velickovic -- who combined for 21 points -- to take a 27-23 lead at the end of the first quarter Velickovic buried two three pointers for an 8-5 lead and Bjelica scored from just about everywhere to push that advantage to 21-13. The Serbians took their only double-digit lead of the game, 23-13, on Velickovic's floater. Reigning world champions Spain came back thanks to the scoring punch of Juan Carlos Navarro as he accounted for eight of his team's last 10 points. Sergio Llull made a pair of free-throws to get Spain within 29-28 early in the second period but Marko Keselj -- who provided a huge offensive boost off the bench -- buried a corner three and Teodosic hit a jumper to edge away once again. Dusko Savanovic made a big three-point play with 4:38 ...
