  • ROSSINI-RESPIGHI: La Boutique Fantasque/Leibowitz/Part-1 of "The Magic Toy Shop". Rare. Rene Leibowitz conducts The London Philharmonic Orchestra (1958) ------------------------ Rene Leibowitz (1913-1972) was born in Warsaw but moved to Paris in his ***s and there began a long, illustrious conducting career. Particularly interested in contemporary music, he studied with Webern and Schoenberg and wrote a detailed ***ysis of twelve-tone music. A keen ear for instrumental coloration (Ravel was his orchestration teacher) was evident in his kaleidoscopic transcriptions of such works as Bach's Passacaglia and Fugue in C (for double orchestra!). But he is best known for his often highly personal renditions of many staples of the Classical and Romantic repertoire.
  • Bloch, Scherzo Fantasque played by Lorin Hollander and the RPO Swiss-Jewish composer Ernest Bloch (1880-1959) wrote his vividly exciting 'Scherzo Fantasque' in 1948. A darkly expressive central section offsets the brilliance and drive of the outer parts. Lorin Hollander (piano) with André Previn and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra made the premier recording of this work in 1965 - the one heard here. Lorin Hollander made quite a stir in the late 1950s and early/mid1960s firstly as a child prodigy and then as a brilliant new arrival on the international scene. He subsequently seemed to drop off the pianistic map, but he is still active and has his own website. He was the son of the renowned pianists Robert and Gaby Casadesus, and grandnephew of Henri Casadesus and Marius Casadesus. Jean Casadesus was born in Paris. He was taught to play piano by his parents and studied at the Conservatoire de Paris before going to the United States to continue his studies at Princeton University. He made his debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra conducted by Eugene Ormandy in 1947 and thereafter enjoyed success as a concert pianist and also as a piano teacher, principally at the American Conservatory at Fontainebleau. His notable students include Robert D. Levin. Jean and his parents performed Mozart's concertos for 2 and 3 pianos. They recorded these works with the Columbia Symphony and Cleveland Orchestra conducted by George Szell and with the Philadelphia Orchestra under the baton of Eugene Ormandy. In 1953 he married Evie Girard, the daughter of the painter André Girard. Jean and Evie Casadesus had one child, a daughter Agnès.
