Life Lessons from a Biscuit Factory - Alain de Botton Complete video at: fora.tv Alain de Botton, author of The Pleasures and Sorrows of Work, discusses lessons he learned from observing workers at a United Biscuits factory in the UK. According to Botton, highly specialized jobs lead to a sense of aimlessness in many workers. "The problem of the modern world...is it becomes very, very hard to see the impacts that you have on anybody's life." ----- For most people the word work is synonymous with jobs, labor and occupations. The things we do to pay the rent. The mundane routine can often overshadow the nuances of the work that we do. In this talk at RMIT in Melbourne, philosopher Alain de Botton reminds us of the importance of appreciating the details of work and workplaces. In this way we can have a greater understanding of the impact our daily tasks have on culture and society, or perhaps decide that it's time for a new career. - Australian Broadcasting Corporation Alain de Botton is a British writer and television producer who employs a philosophical and accessible approach to examining a variety of subjects from the abstract--love and happiness--to the material--architecture. In August 2008, he founded an unconventional new educational establishment in central London called The School of Life, which offers intelligent instruction on how to lead a fulfilled life. De Botton is a frequent contributor to numerous newspapers, journals and magazines and is a member of the Arts Council of England's literature panel. De Botton ...
Mega Factories - Building The Apache Attack Helicopter - PART 1 Filmed at the Boeing plant in Mesa, Arizona -- where cameras are rarely allowed -- for an in-depth look at the world's most lethal attack helicopter and its sophisticated technology. The Boeing AH-64 Apache is a four-blade, twin-engine attack helicopter with tailwheel-type landing gear arrangement, and tandem ***pit for a crew of two. The Apache was developed as Model 77 by Hughes Helicopters for the United States Army's Advanced Attack Helicopter program to replace the AH-1 Cobra. First flown on 30 September 1975, the AH-64 features a nose-mounted sensor suite for target acquisition and night vision systems. The Apache is armed with a 30-millimeter (1.2 in) M230 Chain Gun carried between the main landing gear, under the aircraft's forward fuselage. It has four hardpoints mounted on stub-wing pylons, typically carrying a mixture of AGM-114 Hellfire and Hydra 70 rocket pods. The AH-64 also features double- and triple-redundant aircraft systems to improve survivability for the aircraft and crew in combat, as well as improved crash survivability for the pilots. The US Army selected the AH-64 over the Bell YAH-63 in 1976, awarding Hughes Helicopters a pre-production contract for two more aircraft. In 1982, the Army approved full production. McDonnell Douglas continued production and development after purchasing Hughes Helicopters from Summa Corporation in 1984. The first production AH-64D Apache Longbow, a greatly upgraded version of the original Apache, was delivered to the ...

Mullard - Blackburn Vacuum Tubes Factory (Part 1) Documentary about the manufacturing of thermionic valves by Mullard at the Blackburn factory (Part 1). This plant was closed in the early 80's. For those interested in vacuum tubes, I recommend to watch other great videos at Youtube's Channel "Philipsmuseum" ( ). I also recomend this site: paillard.claude.free.fr with a great video "Fabrication d'une lampe triode". A bit of history: The story begins in 1919 with the collapse of the Z Electric Lamp Company of Southfields run by Captain Stanley R Mullard. The following year, Captain Mullard moved on to set up the Mullard Radio Valve Company Limited. In 1924, still wanting to expand as the demand for valves continued to grow, Captain Mullard sold half his shares in the Mullard Radio Valve Company to NV Philips Gloeilampenfabriken of Eindhoven, Netherlands. This injection of capital allowed for the construction in Blackburn of what was to become the largest valve assembly works in the world. When the doors opened in 1938, the new Mullard Radio Valve Company Limited site employed 28 staff. This grew to about 3000 people by 1945 and by 1954 the site was capable of manufacturing 500000 valves per day. At its peak in 1961, the Mullard site generated its own gas and electricity, making it fully independent of the local town supplies. Over 6200 people were employed both in Blackburn and the various feeder factories supplying raw materials and sub-components to the valve works. Sadly, due to the demise of the valve ...

Super Factories It rockets from 0-60mph in 5.6 seconds and reaches 155mph before an electronic speed limiter says "that's fast enough". It handles so well, the G-forces might make you lose your lunch before the Z4 loses its grip on the road. To manufacture such an artful instrument of automotive pleasure requires three super factories. The first factory, in the Bavarian heartland of Landshut, Germany, casts the automotive industry's first magnesium composite crankcase, which results in the world's lightest six-cylinder crankcase. The second factory is in Munich, Germany which takes the lightweight crankcase and precision assembles a 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine that delivers 255 horsepower. The lean German muscle is then shipped to a third factory -- in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, USA. This last plant is a forerunner in environmental innovation, being the world's first automotive factory to recycle landfill methane gas from rotting trash to power its plant. Now onto the sleek and raw power of the Corvette Z06, the fastest most powerful production Corvette every built. Visit the Corvette factory in Bowling Green, Kentucky, the only location in the world where a Z06 is built from start to finish in 36 hours. The materials used to make the sports car's body and frame are more technologically advanced than what is commonly used in a racecar. Every Z06 engine is hand assembled by one builder and the structure of the sports car has been painstakingly crafted to be lightweight ...

Cocaine Factories - Bolivia Feb 2007 Evo Morales swept to power promising a social revolution which included legalising coca cultivation. A year on, America is so worried Bolivia is becoming a 'Narco State', it's slashed funding. "These are the coca leaves that we step on. This is the paste", states Roberto, showing us around his cocaine factory in the jungle. Promoting alternative uses of coca, such as in tea, is the heart of the government's policy. "The coca leaf is a cultural issue and part of our identity", explains Minister Felipe Casares. Officially, the jungles of Bolivia are producing fewer tonnes of cocaine paste. But Morales' policy of 'Coca Yes, Cocaine No' has the sceptics worried. As Senator Rafael Loayez states; "If we have this very permissive policy, we are going to hve a problem with drug trafficking."
