Big private firms extortionately profit through projects that build and maintain lots of public buildings & infrastructure, such as bridges, schools and hospitals - a total debt to the government & public of £267bn over 50yrs - which has been "both ring-fenced and index-linked". More recently it has led to stories about contractors charging £1000 to install a TV aerial. And a private contractor charging £900 to put up a Treasury Christmas tree! Peterborough City Hospital, the latest to be built under the controversial Private Finance Scheme, has accepted its first patients. Entry from: Caye Caulker, Belize Entry Title: "Cayes, Curry and Kike" Entry: "Crossing the border from Mexico to Belize should be straight forward. It wasn't. Overland, maybe, but we wanted to go from Chetumal in Mexico, by boat, to Caye Caulker off the coast of Belize. On arriving at the bus terminal in Chetumal, we found a poster for a company that did just that, and we could buy tickets for it at the booth in the terminal. How easy!! No. The people at the terminal had no idea what they were supposed to charge us, and then when they thought they got it right, they gave us tickets for the wrong boat company. A huuuuuge queue formed behind us as we tried to sort it out, and by sheer blind luck, a representative from the boat company overheard us and helped us out. Long story short, he told us to come buy the tickets at the dock, so we left the bus terminal, and the humongous queue, empty handed.. So we took an extortionately expensive taxi to the dock and met up with the guy again. After yet more confusion over the price we finally managed to get our tickets. Great, we thought, we have 2 hours to pay our exit fee at the bank. (To leave Mexico you need to fill in a form from the migration office, and then take that to a bank to pay). We couldn't get a form at the bank but someone there told us we ...

Entry: "We have just finished another gorgeous day cycling surrounded by beautiful Swiss hills and in blazing sunshine. Actually, apart from a couple of days rain in Normandy, we have enjoyed sun all the way ( I am now really bronzed up, this time without any sunbed support!) Breakfast from Co-op, yes, Co-op at the station of Yverdon was enriched by meeting a weird old dude who was walking the lakes of Switzerland. As he smoked his way though conversation I wondered how he could walk up the stairs, let alone across Switzerland. We left early around the lake on the east side missing the main road. There was a nature reserve between us and the lake which provided rushes for lots of wildfowl. The best bit though was when a small car tried to overtake a huge log lorry whilst he was overtaking a grass cutter. Polly was in the bushes having a pee but I saw the whole thing. It was great and the result inevitable, the silly lady ended up picking half of her car off the road whilst the log lorry drove off as if nothing had happened. We pedaled though a combination of nice roads and flat farm tracks. At one point we found ourselves staring down an airstrip but there was no activity so we headed on. We stopped for lunch at some Roman ...

Entry from: Brussels, Belgium Entry Title: "Let the trip begin! - Belgium" Entry: "The first destination on my whistle-stop tour of Europe was Belgium. Proximity to Paris and to other surrounding countries made it the natural choice. Wanting to see as much as I could in the two weeks I had off, I had somewhat decided to stick to central Europe. This allowed for maximum exposure with minimum time spent on the bus. Upon arrival in Brussels, like any other place, the first order of business is always getting to the hostel/guesthouse/B &B. Well, turns out it was Easter weekend and I had left things a little later than I should have, so all the places that I wanted to stay in the city center were booked up. Thankfully I knew this before arriving and had spent numerous hours trying to find a decent place for a fair price. I had managed to find a place about 30 minutes outside the city, still on the metro line - a quaint little B &B, so I had to get there. Took me a bit to figure out the metro/tram system but after 30 minutes and a giant uphill walk I arrived - only to be greeted by the friendliest little old lady! As she showed me my room and the bathroom for guests and asked me what time I wanted breakfast overlooking the garden, I couldn't help but feel welcome. Not only was she welcoming in her own ...

Success is an illusion and may also be an hallucination for it cannot be me playing this Steinway I don;t exist and I don;t deserve it. I am reminded watching this film of a French film with English substitles called: "The Green Ray" with Francois Etchergeray. It is the story of how a girl fights tooth and nail in her mind over how close to be with her lover, that she waits all through the film which shown recently on British television presents her finally on the jetty with her lover the boy asking her why she hesitates to spend some time with him. To this she replies: "Have you heard of the green ray?" To this he gives account in some brevity and disillusionment that he has in fact never heard of this which this girl as he has his arm around her speaks, but he also points out to her that he is astonished that she is crying. . "It is the last ray as the sun goes down", she says. "What does it mean?" She then starts laughing and we are in fact not told but left to imagine - typically and so appropriately French you feel too that you could also put your arm around her to ask her.. The film closes with them awaiting the going down of the sun as they still have not moved and are sat leaning against one another on the bench on the jetty, this, where the tide turns many times as never returns for some nor even one; that eventual green ray we finally realise all too soon ...

Entry from: Goa, India Entry Title: "The Beaches and Backwater Adventure Tour" Entry: "After an emotional farewell and a wonderful leaving lunch I left Tamil Nadu around 3 weeks ago to head to Kerala to meet Dipak who was flying in the following morning. Our first stop was Kovalam Beach where we found a lovely little hotel with a fab balcony and access to a private beach. We stayed for 3 nights, experienced some proper monsoon rains and I found myself some western food and a proper cup of tea at the wonderful German Bakery which was better than words could ever express! During our time in Kovalam we made plans for the next phase of the journey where we planned to travel up to Allepey and get ourselves a houseboat on the backwaters for 2 nights. Our journey up to Allepey went very smoothly and upon the recommendation of some friends we headed to a heritage home to look at the boats they had on offer. We picked ourselves a boat and were taken down to where it was moored and we set sail around lunchtime. It was pretty basic but we had 3 staff on board and the food was fabulous. It also had a little upstairs terrace where you could sit and watch the world go by which was lovely. Unfortunately the rain affected our stay a little, it was hot as we didn't have any air conditioning and the mosquitos ...

Read the full blog here: This blog preview was made by TravelPod using the TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow creator. Entry from: Ko Phangan, Thailand Entry Title: "Louzy Laos and into Thailand - the final update..." Entry: "In Laos during the hot season the stifling plains of the South are scorching, the hills of cooler middle Laos are, well, still scorching whilst the mountainous North where Laotians head for relief from the sun is, errm, still scorching. That's right we're still moaning about how hot it is. Undulating hills covered in a blanket of thick tropical forest climb steeply as we head North into the mountains from Luang Prabang. The bus moves torturously slowly but it's beautiful. The population becomes sparse and the mountains are dotted with villages of the colourful hilltribes. Ethnic immigrants from Burma, China, Vietnam and Thailand have made the area their home, stilt houses perched on the mountainside with views to die for. The locals pass in traditional dress and go about their lives in a way unchanged for a century. But the higher we climb the more we're ripped off, the more people are rude and agressive and getting from A to B becomes the stuff of nightmares. ''If you want to travel 50km in Laos it takes you a day, if you want to travel 500km it takes you a day. Everything takes all f*cking day'' says an Aussie knowingly. The region's not without its highlights; Beer Laos is legendary ...

Entry: "After a morning spent browsing in the many music shops, Rie and me headed towards the Harbour Bridge in the afternoon. We'd been debating whether or not to do the Bridge Climb (extortionately priced at $160), and indeed we've still not decided to this day. In the meantime, we climbed the 200 steps to the Pylon Lookout which offers similar views, but costs a lot less (just $8!). It was a great vantage point, and needless to say, my memory card was filled with yet more photographs of the Opera House! We went to the huge cinema on George Street that evening to watch Walking The Line, the Johnny Cash biopic. I really enjoyed it, and I'm sure I'll invest in some of his cds when I get back (once I've received my first pay packet!). Thankfully Rie is similar to me in that she doesn't like staying in the hostel for long, so after the movie we explored Chinatown and had another walk down to the harbour. This actually became quite a common scenario for us, and usually there'd be some performers down near the Opera House, be it aboriginals playing their didgeridoos, or rastamen playing their reggae. There was always a buzz around Circular Quay, and we enjoyed relaxing down there (and my Japanese vocabulary is increasing as a result!). Friday began ...

The other thing everyone says is a must if you're doing the east coast. They're right as well. Gonna write more about this at a later date as spent ages doing Sydney already, so sorry to all you *** Fraser Island fans who have been waiting intently for my stories of ace 4x4 driving (I was the best!). You'll just have to hold it in. It's coming. Right then, arrived in Rainbow Beach on standby for the ever so famous Fraser Island 4x4 self drive. We decided to go from here as it's only 8 minutes on the ferry from the island, and once on the island you are straight on the Eastern side - the only side you can drive on. If you enter on the West from Hervey Bay, the ferry takes 40 minutes and once there you have to drive across the island not seeing much, which takes around 2 and a half hours, and thus wastes half your first and last day. It's also a nicer place than Hervey Bay. We were on standby because we, as always, were ever so organised. You're supposed to book your place 5-7 days before you plan to go - minimum. We called up 2 days before. Anyhow, since we rock slightly too much they let us on when we wanted. So, had our induction ...

But not to worry, there are lots more pics to put on the site which she features in. It's just not the same without you Cheese!!! We spent 2 days in Ayers Rock resort, which we have now found was ample enough time to see most things. We flew to Ayers Rock airport which is basically just a big hall with a few check in desks and a departure area with a wee shop and a cafe. There is only one place to stay anywhere near the big rock and that's Ayers Rock resort which has about 4 extortionately priced hotels and one lodge with a hostel in it. We went for the cheap and cheerful approach and stayed in a 20 bedded dorm, not quite what we're used to being used to the finer things in life and all!!! Tokyo is a weird place as although it's huge there is no central point like in a normal European city. It seems like there are lots and lots of centres which would be cities in their own right. The train and tram map looks like a huge map of spaghetti which takes some time to get used to...mind you the locals are all very friendly and come up asking you whether help is required....they listen, nod and then point you in completely the wrong direction! The blossom was just coming out when we arrived in Tokyo and this is a huge thing for them...it's literally on the television every night advising the best places to go and they have blossom parties where they have picnics under the trees. It's all very orderley and every picnic has it's own pitch set out by the park officials. We switched on the TV in the hotel and tuned into the Sumo tournament going on at Osaka. They have 6 large tournaments each year where the big blokes get it on down slapping one another's bellies. These days the top ...

Entry from: Pulau banyak, Indonesia Entry Title: "Singkil and the 99 islands" Entry: "Ooh getting to Pulau Banyak was a mission, involving many many bus journeys, feeling like a tit several times and often wondering where i was going to end up. First i was ripped off by the guys from my guest house for the short motorbike ride to the bus point (had no other choice, and they knew that), then i had to take a bus to the edge of toba, from where i had been told previously that i could get a bus to Sidikalang, which it turned out was a lie, so i had to get a Medan bound bus to a smaller town, from where I caught a bus to Sidikalang. From Sidikalang i caught another bus to Samusarewan (or something like that) before finally changing for a bus to Singkil. The final bus to Singkil could well have been a post office van, as we seem to drive all over the country delivering packages, picking up further deliveries and seemingly running the driver and his cohorts little errands and money making side schemes. I'm used to this sort of thing now but the amount of time they spent doing this was a little ridiculous, turning a 1 hour journey into more like three hours. Arriving in Singkil thoroughly shattered, i was not pleased by the prospects that were laid out in front of me. Its the Indonesian equivalent of a tiny ...

Entry from: Moscow, Russia Entry Title: "Moscow Magic" Entry: "As it turns out, popular media does a pretty good job of portraying Moscow. As expected: 1) It's true, Moscow's sidewalks are part walkway, part catwalk. There is a disproportionate amount of superhumanly beautiful women here. There are no abayas in sight, and Russian female national dress appears to be the mini skirt and heels, manditorily complimented by a Fashion-TV-like strut. There is, of course, no shortage of comically over-beautified girls too. Latex pants are all the rage... The men, come in three general varieties. There is a large continegent of guys who look a lot like Alexandre Overchkin which, in my personal opinion, is not a very good thing. The second variety look, dress, and act like they could be undercover KGB agents, or Russian mobsters, or both. You know the look: shaved head, angry... The third group - the most underrepresented of the three - are more matching to the women, and could have popped straight out of a Zara catalogue, though several of these are, matchingly, of the comically over-beautified variety as well. 2) It's true, people in Moscow are generally not that nice, and are in fact scowlingly mean most of the time. 3) It's true, it's bloody bureaucratic and intrusive here.
