  • Nancy Rhee [Sea Chantey from Jamaica] One of several chanteys remembered by James Taft Hatfield from his 1886 voyage on the full-rigged bark Ahkera, manned by a crew of "eight strapping Jamaican Negroes." Hatfield notes, "I have not found this haunting melody (or these words) elsewhere." I have yet to, either. His notation is vague and he neglects to indicate its usage, but I suspect that it was meant to be sung in unison. The tune, however, deserves longer treatment. He gives just two verses (Nancy Rhee, oh Nancy Rhee . . . & The Austral is the ship for me . . .) which I use as my first and last. The rest is extemporized on the spot -- unfortunately, my diction slips too close to that of an Appalachian murder ballad by the end, but that's a vernacular I'm more familiar with.

  • McMurray's California Thumpers Miff Mole Phil Napoleon Blue Roaring 20's.MP4 The life of Loren McMurray provides one of the sadder stories of the otherwise cheerful and manic jazz age. Born in 1897 in Kansas, McMurray arrived in New York in 1921, establishing himself over the previous four years as one of the most innovative players of the alto saxophone. In 1920, really the second year of the Jazz Age, the sound of the saxophone became a "must" for any self-respecting dance orchestra, and McMurray was in the right place at the right time with the talent to capitalize on that demand. McMurray had already played in numerous small bands betwen 1917-1920, then at the very beginning of the twenties played for brief lengths of time with what would be three of the most frequently recorded orchestras during the remainder of the decade: Sam Lanin, The Virginians - drawn from Paul Whiteman's orchestra and directed by Ross Gorman - and Mike Markels. During these years, his playing was described as having something that set him apart from other saxophonists of the time, notably a beautifully airy and controlled tone and an ability to create extemporized melodic phrases and exciting breaks. The older Rudy Wiedoeft was considered his major competitor, but lacked McMurray's improvisational talents. McMurray made an unknown number of records during 1920-21 playing as a sideman under the confusing array of pseudonyms employed in that era to convey the appearance of many more bands than really existed. Mark Berresford, who authored his biographical information ...

This picture was taken after the battle of Las Guaymas, and shows a large number of wounded soldiers embarking in a rowboat from an extemporized dock, on their way to the hospital ship "Olivette." • Beethoven 24 Variations on "Venni Amore" by Righini WoO 65 (1790) Beethoven loved the theme and variations form, and used it extensively throughout his life, both for stand alone compositions and also as individual movements of his larger works (sonatas, chamber works and symphonies). It fit very well with his own compositional predilections, where he often deconstructs a theme, breaking it down into its individual components which are then used to develop the entire piece. The variation form was an ideal format for Beethoven to explore this style of composition and he wrote most of his variations for solo piano when he was a young man, before moving on to more serious works. It was also a popular form for pianists to showcase their talents at private gatherings and in friendly competitions with other pianists. Beethoven was known also as a great improviser, and some of his early variations are thought to be based on some of these extemporized performances, usually with a contemporarily popular tune from operas or ballets as a theme. The Righini variations are a very early work, written in his home town of Bonn just before he left to make his mark in the big city of Vienna. There is a great deal of maturity evident in these variations, and indeed for many years they were thought to have been extensively revised about a dozen years after they first appeared, although this turned out to not be the case. Their length alone set them apart from all his other early sets, and only two much later works are longer. Several of the variations are ...

  • ChiriBim Chiri Bim Traditional Yiddish Folk Song The words chiribim and chiribom are the entire lyrics of this song. They don't mean anything. Sounds or syllables like this are sung by Hasids (A sect of Jewish mystics founded in Poland about 1750, characterized by religious zeal and a spirit of prayer, joy, and charity.) to wordless tunes, called niguns (Songs sung by Hasidic Jews as a means of elevating the soul to Gd. Because they lacked words, the nigunim were felt to move the singer beyond the sensual and rational toward the mystic. Such songs were spontaneously extemporized by a rabbi or one of his disciples, the entire group then repeating the song in unison. Melodically, the songs are strongly influenced by Slavic folk song, but they are freer in rhythm.) . (When I say, "Come my beloved" You'll say. • Dagbani Trifle, By NN Kofi. Harold Richter - Piano Dagbani is a dialect or language spoken in Ghana, it's native speakers are primarily of the Dagomba people of north - eastern Ghana. I am not sure about the origins of this song but i know it is a traditional song that had been extemporized on by NN Kofi. Why it's called Dagbani Trifle, i am not sure, probably it has to do with some kind of a food recipe in the part of the country.
