  • Mexico Travel: Excursions near Morelia - Quiroga, Tzintzuntzan, Janitzio, Patzcuaro My second day in Morelia entailed a full-day excursion to nearby Lake Patzcuaro. After an enjoyable country drive we made our first stop in Quiroga, a commercial country town that is well known for its carnitas, exquisitely roasted tender pork that is rolled up inside a soft tortilla delicious! Hundreds of vendors sell clothing, fruits, vegetables and all sorts of trinkets. After a stop in the historic town of Tzintzuntzan, the former capital of the Purepecha empire, we drove to the shores of Lake Patzcuaro and took a boat to the island of Janitzio, an island that is crowned by a 50 metre high statue of Jose Maria Morelos, one of Mexicos most important indepence heros. Janitizo is most well known for its exuberant celebrations of the Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). After climbing up a series of steep steps flanked by shops selling handicrafts and local food, we reached the top of the island and even lined up to climb the inside of the statue. Once we had reached the top of the statue we were able to peer out over the lake from the stretched-out fist of Jose Maria Morelos. Our final stop for the day was in the historic town of Patzcuaro where we grabbed a bite to eat and took a walk through the historic downtown. We visited the Basilica de Nuestra Senora de la Salud as well as the Casa de los Once Patios (House of the Eleven Courtyards), a former nunnery that has been turned into a centre of culture and arts and crafts. We watched two local artists, a woodworker and ...

  • A&WP 290 Steam Excursion (Part 1 of 5) I want to make sure that all who watch this video know I'm not taking credit for filming this video. New Georgia Steam Excursions, from Pentrex is the video Im sharing this from. I have no intent of infringing on somebodys copyright. I only wish to share these clips with fellow railfans who appreciate these shots for what they are. From what I can find after over a year of searching there isnt any footage available to the public of 290 while she was running so as long Ill share these clips for as long as I can. Now that I've placed my disclaimer, here we go: This is part 1 of 5 of the excursion A&WP 290 ran from Atlanta, Ga to Montgomery, Al. This was the first (& I Believe last) time the locomotive ran on her home rails. This is also a special occurrence seeing that 290 is wearing her original whistle that she wore while carrying the Crescent between Atlanta and Montgomery. This trip, locomotive & rail line hold a special place in my heart seeing that the A&WP (now CSX A&WP Subdivision) are my home rails and if you look at any of my recent videos youll see that the A&WP is my primary railfaning line that I was born & raised on. The other significance to this trip is that this is the last time I saw mainline steam running. Its been over 17 years now and, like most of us, Id love to hear a whistle once more. On a rainy August 21, 1992 A&WP 290 takes her train out of Atlanta, Ga and onto her home rails of the A&WP. The train is shown here between Atlanta & La Grange, Ga. I ...

  • Cayo Santa Maria, "Melia Las Dunas Resort" + Excursions, CUBA HOLA! Everything at this resort was excellent. Been to Cuba three times and, it just keeps getting better. Like anywhere else, there is always some negatives, but not enough to even bother mentioning. There is something for everyone. Lots to do!! Overall, we had a great time!!! :) I would recommend this resort. Just one little thing though, bring a good pair of walking shoes, because there is LOTS and LOTS and LOTS of walking, however, if you look on the bright side, it's a good way to digest your food and, to keep fit. ;)
  • Ford Excursion Stretch Limousine Crushed and Shredded by VOSA Report by In 2009, VOSA told illegal operators within to clean up their act or risk having their vehicles seized and even crushed - Its kept its word - but only one of those accounts. Since then, a large number of limousines have been seized - but either returned to the owner or sold back to finance companies. Last year, VOSA seized two ford excursions from a unlicensed company in south Wales. The owner failed in his appeal to get them back and continue operating. So now, in the biggest show of force EVER by VOSA. they're going to be crushed!!!
  • Cass Scenic Railroad (snow excursion) You simply must check out this private excursion on the Cass Scenic RR under harsh winter-like blizzard conditions! Problem is, this was NOT a winter excursion, but rather a SPRING excursion in MAY! Yes, I said MAY!! This was shot on MAY(!!) 10 1997. Actually we experience THREE seasons on this day! We depart in the fall, arrive at Bald Knob in winter, and arrive back at Cass in the spring! All within 8 hours! The temperature at Cass upon departure was about 35 degrees. At Bald Knob it was about 20, but upon our return to Cass it was almost 60! After departing Bald Knob (the line's highest point) we go on to Spruce, the site of a onetime mill town, now well past the ghost town stage. Interesting stereo effects here as the locomotive whistles echo off the mountains! Then back to Cass where there was still a bit of rain but now considerably warmer! Most of us expected a balmy spring day and didn't come prepared for a blizzard! Where I'm from we don't git no snow in May! (FYI-On our private Cass excursions we have two trains-a re-created logging train and a photographers' [photo] train that the logging train closely follows. Most of us stand on the open car at the back of the photo train and photograph the logging train as it follows us. That way we get the ultimate historical experience-the logging train as it appeared in the logging days when West Virginia Pulp and Paper [now Westvaco and relocated in Luke MD] and later Mower Lumber Company [now defunct] operated it. Mower ...

  • Paul Murphy - Larry Willis 'Excursions' Two Giants of Avant-Garde Jazz! Their goal is to have these solos be an outgrowth of cultural perceptions and expectations. Paul started studying drums with Gene Krupa and then with Louis Bellson. By age 16 he was playing bebop with Billy Taylor. (Duke Ellington's bassist) After playing jazz and blues on the Washington scene for a few years, he split for the West Coast. While there he started playing Avant-Garde in San Francisco and the Bay Area. In 1974, Jimmy Lyons heard Paul play in Oakland and suggested he move to New York. In the summer of 1974 Paul joined Jimmy Lyons's group and for the next 8 years Paul played, recorded and toured the USA and Europe with Lyons. During his extremely busy time period in New York, Paul still found time to manage Rashied Ali's historic-legendary club "Ali's Alley" while he led his own quintet with John Coltrane's world famous trumpet player Dewey Johnson (from his profoundly momentous 'Ascension' recording), along with Jay Oliver on bass, Karen Borca on bassoon, and Mary Anne Driscoll on piano. Paul has been at the fore front of early Avant-Garde jazz with his remarkable and extraordinary drumming technique. His playing style is quite unique and very much his own. Larry Willis' first year of studying music theory was at the Manhattan School of Music. There he began performing regularly with Jackie McLean. After he graduated he made his first jazz recording, McLean's 'Right Now!' which featured two of his compositions. His first ...
