"Lalee's Kin: The Legacy of Cotton" documentary excerpts w/ original score by Gary Lucas In 2001 Gary Lucas was commissioned by Maysles Films ("Gimme Shelter", "Grey Gardens") to compose and perform an original music score for their new documentary "Lalee's Kin: The Legacy of Cotton" --directed by Susan Froemke, with cinematography by the legendary Albert Maysles and editing by Deborah Dickson-- after a producer at Maysles Films heard the guitarist/composer performing live on national public radio. After contacting Gary Lucas by email, Lucas traveled up to the offices of Maysles Films in NYC the day after his live NPR broadcast, sat down with his acoustic guitar in front of a tv monitor, began improvising to rushes from the film--and was hired on the spot. This HBO documentary, a searing and tragic indictment of the Mississippi cotton industry and the death grip it exerts on impoverished families who toil to this day in the fields for far beneath the minimum wage, was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary, after premiering to glowing reviews at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival. "Lalee's Kin" went on to play film festivals all over the world, had a theatrical release in NYC, and was broadcast not only on HBO, but worldwide. Variety wrote of Gary Lucas's blues-drenched score: "Gary Lucas' Delta blues guitar music adds vivid color to this report from America's forgotten underbelly."

Mike Daisey - How Theater Failed America Excerpts from Mike Daisey's "How Theater Failed America" from its Off-Broadway run, directed by Jean-Michele Gregory. Master storyteller Mike Daisey sinks his razor-sharp wit into a subject he knows well: the American theater, from the sublimely crass to the genuinely ugly. From gorgeous new theaters standing empty as cathedrals, to successful working actors traveling like migrant farmhands, to an arts culture unwilling to speak or listen to its own nation, Daisey takes stock of the dystopian state of theater in America: a shrinking world with smaller audiences every year. Fearlessly implicating himself and the system he works within, Daisey seeks answers to essential and dangerous questions about the art were making, the legacy we leave the future, and who it is we believe were speaking to. "A funny, surprisingly supple performance about life in the theater, the ecstatic highs and the aching, humiliating lows, rendered here with explosive humor and a dark edge of tragedy." WASHINGTON POST "This piece should reach anyone who believes in live performance." VARIETY "His transfixing delivery underscores his central point: theatre is a wave, not a particle, and the current system isn't doing it—or us—justice." THE NEW YORKER

Kaushiki Chakrabarty - excerpt from raag Multani Since there's been quite some response and enthusiasm for the youtube-video's and the 'Gharana radio-special' (for info on the radio-special see my weblog ) I produced this year on ragasinger Kaushiki Chakrabarty I think publishing a very nice excerpt of Kaushiki's great concert on 15th of April this year in Amsterdam will be appreciated by all admirers of her singing. It's a 10-minute excerpt of Kaushiki's rendition of raag Multani in Amsterdam. On tabla: Subhashish Bhattacharjee, on harmonium: Vyasmurti Anandteerth Katti. Notice the big difference (and improvement) in sound compared to the sound in the earlier published video-portrait and in the radio-portrait, where I used excerpts of the same Amsterdam-concert. In this youtube-video I think the overall sound is better than in both the video-portrait and in the radio-special. I combined and mixed the recording made in the concert hall (as represented in the video-portrait of Kaushiki) with the (reference-)recording of the Theatre of the Royal Tropical Institute in Amsterdam, a recording I used in the radio-portrait. The result of this new mix (out of the two 'problematic' earlier ones) is a sound that's hopefully more satisfying on all levels. But this is probably of no concern to most of you watching this video. Hope you'll enjoy it! Copyright of this video: Pieter de Rooij, Tonal Ties Productions.
