Acetylene Balloon Explosion We were doing a experiments day looking at combustion. Acetylene (Ethyne) burns with a very incomplete flame, and to illustrate this we lit on fire a balloon of the gas outside where you can see the cloud of black carbon smoke which is produced from the incomplete combustion.

Combustion of acetylene (Pembakaran asetilena) Experiment about the combustion of acetylene, Info of acetylene:Acetylene (systematic name: ethyne) is the chemical compound with the formula C2H2. It is a hydrocarbon and the simplest alkyne. This colorless gas is widely used as a fuel and a chemical building block. It is unstable in pure form and thus is usually handled as a solution. As an alkyne, acetylene is unsaturated because its two carbon atoms are bonded together in a triple bond. The carbon-carbon triple bond places all four atoms in the same straight line, with CCH bond angles of 180°. Since acetylene is a linear symmetrical molecule, it possesses the D∞h point group. Acetylene was discovered in 1836 by Edmund Davy who identified it as a "new carburet of hydrogen". It was rediscovered in 1860 by French chemist Marcellin Berthelot, who coined the name "acetylene". Berthelot was able to prepare this gas by passing vapours of organic compounds (methanol, ethanol, etc.) through a red-hot tube and collecting the effluent. He also found acetylene was formed by sparking electricity through mixed cyanogen and hydrogen gases. Berthelot later obtained acetylene directly by passing hydrogen between the poles of a carbon arc. Today acetylene is mainly manufactured by the partial combustion of methane or appears as a side product in the ethylene stream from cracking of hydrocarbons. Sir Christian Malapit He was showing us a basic alkyne, CaC2 mixed with water turns into ethyne gas that is used for ripening fruits. You will see him demonstrating that the ethyne gas is very flammable and then he was supposed to show us iodine which becomes colorless when mixed with this gas, but it failed because the iodine was too much.

Silver Acetylide- Synthesis and Detonation Silver acetylide, a primary explosive compound, is synthesized by bubbling acetylene gas through a silver nitrate solution. It's not exactly an economical process given the high price of silver, but it's quite surprising to hear the tremendous report caused by the detonation of a fraction of a gram of this substance.
