Hovestadt - special thanks to Benjamin Dillenburger - Michael Hansmeyer - Steffen Lemmerzahl - developed with processing: - The Attractive City Generator was conceived and developed as a part of a research project at the ETH in Zurich, at the chair of Computer Aided Architectural Design. Our task was to explore urban design methodologies with the use of object oriented programing. The idea behind it, is to explore urban design methodologies, based on object oriented programing. Our particular area of interest is the use of interactivity in urban planning, with our main goal being the integration and emancipation of citizens. Attractive City Generator is a tool to educate people how cities could be created in many ways and different settings in a very playful way. We want to bring everyone closer to architecture, to inspire people for our field of activity and to encourage creativity. Our goal is to make people aware of social condititons in an urban network and encourage them to take part in decisions - involve people into the process of urban planning . We as urban planners are only setting the basic rules for the city as a basic framework. Instead of using a mouse or a keyboard, the application is designed much more intuitively and contextually for the ...

Ari Helenius (ETH Zurich) Part 3 Open Sesame: Cell Entry and Vaccinia Virus Part 3 focuses on a single virus, the Vaccinia virus, as a model for cell binding, signaling and endocytosis. Fluorescently labeled Vaccinia viruses bind to and surf along host cell filopodia. Helenius lab members noticed that when Vaccinia, unlike other viruses, reached the surface of the cell body it caused the plasma membrane to form blebs. Further experiments showed that the virus tricks the cell into thinking it is apoptotic debris. This induces blebbing and subsequent uptake of the virus by macropinocytosis. Additionally, automated high throughput siRNA screening was used to screen a large number of infected cells for host genes required for Vaccinia virus uptake. ***ysis of the genes identified allowed host factors and processes critical to viral infection to be identified. Expansion of this technique may provide a new source of information on pathogen-host interactions. See more at

Ari Helenius (ETH Zurich) Part 2 Endocytosis and Penetration In the second lecture, the next steps in viral infection are described. Endocytosis of plasma membrane bound viruses can occur via a number of mechanisms including caveolar, clathrin, non-clathrin, or lipid raft mediated pathways. The internalized virus is enclosed in an endosome that may undergo increasing acidification resulting in acid mediated fusion between the viral envelope and the vesicle membrane. Following membrane penetration, the virus, once again, makes use of cellular machinery such as microtubules and their motors, to transfer its genome to the nucleus. Helenius describes experiments from his lab and others that have deciphered these complex processes. See more at

Sister Gwen Shaw http://www.eth-/Gwen_Shaw.htm apgujung 압구정동 Biography of Gwen R. Shaw Gwen R. Shaw is president and founder of End-Time Handmaidens, Inc. After graduating from a Canadian Bible School, she answered the call of God to go to China in 1947. Since missionary organizations were returning their senior missionaries to the field following World War II, none to which she applied would accept her; she then traveled, by faith, to the northwestern region of China, ministering there until her city was endangered by the fast-approaching Communist army. She escaped on the second to last flight out of Lanchow, the nearest airport a three-day journey. With the door closed to China, Dr. Shaw continued to fulfill her call to the Chinese by ministering in Taiwan and Hong Kong, where she lived until 1970. In 1963 she received a double-portion anointing after a time of fasting and prayer. From that time on she has served God in about 160 nations of the world, with Holy Ghost fire, signs and wonders following in her trail. In 1970, after a lengthy fast, the Lord burdened her to call out the End-Time Handmaidens to reap the harvest in the nations of the world. It was after this that she founded the organization which is known by that name. She is also author of over 50 books and has composed many songs of worship. Dr. Shaw was also led of the Lord to found the End-Time Handmaidens International School of Ministry in 1988. It is an anointed school with a vision for teaching the deep truths of Gods Word, imparting a burden for the nations ...

The Distributed Flight Array A short video which introduces the Distributed Flight Array (DFA) which is being developed at ETH Zurich. This multi-rotor vehicle consists of autonomous single-rotor modules that are able to drive, dock with its peers, and fly in a coordinated fashion. These modules are organized as distributed computational units with minimal sensory input. Experimental demonstrations in docking, driving, and flying have proven its feasibility as a research platform for investigating techniques in distributed estimation and control. The work shown here was completed by the 2008/9 AYIM class ( For more information, visit: www.idsc.ethz.ch

Rodney Douglas - Institute of Neuroinformatics ETH Zurich How far are we on the way to brain-like computing? Rodney Douglas is head of the Institute of Neuroinformatics (INI) at the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, one of the leading European research centres on neuroinformatics. Neuroinformatics investigates the technology aspect of brains in order to understand how it actually computes. The INI team has various promising research projects running, one is the Neuromorphic VLSI vision sensors, also called "silicon retina". In this interview with Professor Douglas we talk about the brain as a self-programming organ, brain-like computing and why understanding phenomenons like human motivation or sense of fulfilment is key to his work. ETH Fully Vision Based Autonomous Helicopter in Unstructured Environments: VTOL Developed at the ETH Zurich. Only a single camera is used to control the helicopter. The blob is used to initialize the map and the scale factor at the beginning. Take-off is automatic. Feature points are tracked and used in a visual SLAM framework to build the map of the environment. The helicopter then follows autonomously the via-points created in this map and land automatically onto the second blob, which is used to show the precision of landing. The distance between the start and end position is about 3 meters. With this helicopter, we will partecipate in the EMAV (European Micro Aerial Vehicle) competition in September 2009 in Delft. This work is supported by the European research project sFly (). This work was developed at the ETH Zurich, in the Autonomous Systems Lab.

Ari Helenius (ETH Zurich) Part 1 Virus entry Viruses are extremely simple and small yet they are responsible for many of the worlds diseases. A virus particle consists of only a genome, a protein coat or capsid, and sometimes a surrounding lipid envelope. To replicate, a virus must successfully enter a host cell, uncoat its genome, and appropriate the host cell machinery to replicate its genome and produce viral proteins. Part 1 of this lecture will discuss ways in which viruses bind to the surface of host cells. Simian Virus 40 which binds to specific cell surface glycolipids, and Human Papilloma Virus-16 which binds to sites on filoipodia, are examples of different binding mechanisms. Attachment of viruses to the plasma membrane activates cell signaling resulting in endocytosis of the viral particles. This lecture is appropriate for upper level undergraduate and graduate classes studying virology or endocytosis. See more at

The Balancing Cube, ETH Zurich The Balancing Cube www.idsc.ethz.ch The Balancing Cube can balance on any of its edges or corners. It owes this ability to six mechanisms on each inner face that rotate in concert and achieve equilibrium for the overall system. Each of the mechanisms is an autonomous unit with sensors, a computer, a motor, and a battery on board. The six mechanism share information and coordinate themselves over a network of their computers. by Sebastian Trimpe, Matt Donovan, Raffaello D'Andrea, video by Geo Robson
