  • E&M 2 - Electric Potential This is the second video in the Electricity and Magnetism sequence. Here we introduce Electric Potential, which will be an important player later on, particularly in the ***ysis of circuits. We motivate the introduction of electric potential by using Faraday's Law applied to electrostatics. While this is not necessary (Faraday's Law is vacuous without magnetic fields), it will provide us with some perspective when we get to the non-static version of Faraday's Law. After introducing potential, we discuss how it is related to the work required to move through an electric field, and then go on to compute the potential of a point charge and a more complicated charge distribution. We close with a description of equipotential surfaces and getting the electric field back from the potential. Unfortunately, there are many useful concepts which are not in this video. Among those things left out are the relationship between electric potential and potential energy, which of course is connected to the issue of work that we do discuss. Also left out is a discussion of the intuitive ***ogy between electric potential and gravitational potential. These topics were omitted to allow for a more leisurely pace.
