  • Alternative TV — «Life After Life», 1977 Alternative TV (sometimes known as ATV) were an English rock band, formed in London in 1976. Their punk rock and post-punk sound was influential for several musical artists. Alternative TV were formed by Mark Perry, the founding editor of Sniffin' Glue punk fanzine, with Perry and Alex Fergusson. The band's debut single was "Love Lies Limp", a free flexi disc issued with the final edition of Perry's Sniffin' Glue fanzine. On this single Perry and Fergusson were accompanied by John Towe (ex Generation X) and Tyrone Thomas. Towe left to join the Rage and was replaced by Chris Bennett, so completing a line-up which early punk fans consider to epitomise the punk era (the band subsequently underwent extensive line-up changes). Shortly afterwards they released the "How Much Longer" / "You ***" 7" in December 1977, the A-side being a critique of youth culture apathy.
  • Oliva - Part 7 Olivia is based on what is perhaps the most civilised and delicate girly-girl book ever written in Telluria, also called Olivia and written by Miss Dorothy Bussy Strachey, the sister of Lytton Strachey. The book is so subtle and beautiful that it is hard to believe a film could do it justice but this one does. It was made in 1951, and directed by Mlle. Jacqueline Audry. The screenplay is by Colette. The story is once again set in a school (one of the main sources for all-girl settings in Telluria). This one has two headmistresses: a married couple who epitomise the qualities of blonde and brunette in the Aristasian sense. The blonde headmistress is played by Simone Simon. She is consummately blonde - delicate, sensitive, fluffy, and, unfortunately, at this stage in her life, rather neurotic. The brunette headmistress is played by Edwige Feuillère, known to her adoring fans as Edwige Première (Edwige the First, as in the title of a queen) because of her cool and imposing presence. In Olivia she plays a wonderfully wise, sophisticated and literate brunette headmistress. The heroine of the story is Olivia, an English girl who is sent to the school and becomes infatuated with the brunette headmistress. It is a delicate, beautiful coming-of-age story that could almost be taking place in Aristasia.
  • ItaliaspeedTV - Alfa Romeo Giulietta TV advert, Italy (featuring Uma Thurman) - 23 May 2010 Uma Thurman and William Shakespeare's verses - "We are such stuff as dreams are made on" - are featuring in the advertising campaign for new Alfa Romeo Giulietta. The star of Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill, who combines an ice-cold, untainted image with aggressiveness, bravery, dynamism and beauty, will epitomise the various souls of Giulietta, a car that knows how to be agile in the toughest situations and comfortable on everyday roads. This is the merit of the new "Compact" architecture. Using sophisticated suspension technical solutions, a dual pinion active steering, top-quality materials and state-of-the-art manufacturing technologies, the Giulietta achieves excellent levels of on-board comfort, dynamic features and safety (both active and passive). Created by Leo Burnett, the international campaign - on TV, press, posters, radio and web, across all the main countries in Europe - plays on the parallelism between Uma Thurman and the Alfa Romeo Giulietta: the actress' personalities are reflected in the features of the car and ultimately merge. References starting from a dream-like, abstract dimension are resolved in an urban context, attributing realism and consistency to Giulietta's dream. The substance of the new Giulietta is further confirmed by the pay-off which counterbalances the Shakespeare quote: "Without heart we are only machines". In brief, the new Alfa Romeo is a dream that becomes reality. Precisely like the legendary 1950s model - the name of the new car is a ...

  • Gotta LOVE Sydney Ferries Campaign A coalition of unions, activists and community groups has launched a new campaign to keep Sydney's famous green and gold ferries in public hands. Applications from private companies to tender for the operation of Sydney's harbour ferries close today. The campaign was launched by the legendary heritage and trade union activist Jack Mundey, under the banner "Gotta Love Sydney Ferries - some things are too important to sell off". "Our green and gold ladies of the harbour epitomise its working class heritage," Mr Mundey said. "They provide a first rate transport service in an idyllic setting. "Selling them off is like plastering a for sale sign across the Sydney Opera House, some things are just too important to sell." The Save Our Sydney Ferries campaign will roll out in key communities serviced by ferries on the Harbour and the Parramatta River. Maritime Union of Australia Assistant Secretary Paul Garrett said the community and workers would stand side-by-side to help Sydney Ferries remain in public hands. "Sydney Ferries are one of the cleanest, safest and most enjoyable ways to get around the heart of our city. It makes sense that they should be owned and operated for the people, by the people," Mr Garrett said. Since the Walker Review, Sydney Ferries has turned a corner and is now one of the best performing public transport operators in Australia. Reliability has increased to 99.5 per cent and on time running continues to rise at 98.1 per cent. Vessel incidents on the ...

  • Spirit of Freecording #2: Jürgen Horrwarth Here at Canon we've been working on our campaign for Freecording, shaking up old-school ideas of camcording and changing the way you film - seeing the action and adventure in the things you do every day. We've put together some videos - mini-documentaries demonstrating what we think is the essence of Freecording. We've chosen a few sports that we think epitomise the movement. This one is a video we made in Berlin last month with Jürgen Horrwarth. Jürgen's a pro-skater who's competing at Freestyle (www.freestyle) in Zurich at the end of September. We partnered with him in the run up to the comp and put together this film to look at the importance of video to the community and see what freecording means to a legend of the skate scene. We headed out to Jürgen's local park in Friedrichshain with Jon Drever and Fraser Byrne - skate film-makers from Grain Media - and spent the day following Jürgen as he prepared for freestyle.ch. He showed us around the area, demo'ing his street skills, then put himself to work on the bowl and vert ramp, filming himself then getting some help from fellow pro, Mack McKelton. You can see the film he made with one of our HF10s here - Check out our other 'Spirit of Freecording' videos with Parkour Generation in District 13 and snowboarder Reto Kestenholz in Zermatt You can find more information about freecording and the products we used here - dvc.canon-

  • All Angels - Come Away With Me All Angels perform Come Away With Me from their new album 'Fly Away', released September 14th 2009. 'Fly Away' marks the group's departure from purely classical roots, and will bring their flawless sonorities to songs that epitomise America inspired by their recent visit. The inspiration for Fly Away came when All Angels were struck by the impact of the American Presidential Campaign last year. They feel that the album reflects the 'hope' that came with Barack Obama's election. The album contains a huge variety of songs including interpretations of Norah Jones, Gershwin and even Elvis Presley. Add to that a beautiful original composition by the up-and-coming Eric Whitacre, 'Sleep' and this recording is a truly diverse representation of America's greatest songs.
  • Leh, Ladakh, Jammu & Kashmir, Active Compassion Leh, Ladakh, Jammu & Kashmir - The scene of unlimited compassion. - The potential to care for others is here in every moment. The pupils and staff at this Ladakh School in Leh epitomise this ideal. We stand on the outside and contribute if we can; in any way we can. We're inspired by the ability of people (big and small) everywhere to share what they have, simply to make those around them happy. Rigjung Public School in Choglamsar, near Leh in Ladakh, great school, great story. The school helps as many kids as it can regardless of cultural or religious conditions, they work with some of the poorest communities in the world...and yet possess such richness. Every child sponsored in the school allows another child to be given the opportunity to come down from the mountains. It's a Buddhist school run by a Kagyu Lama, the students all have one thing in common, they are getting a great education despite difficult circumstances. Donations, sponsorships, and messages of support most welcome. Education for Peace in a charitable company registered with HMRC.

  • Duck House Get Involved: The Vote for a Change campaign, which is leading calls for an Election Day referendum on the voting system, organised a protest on the Thames on the 5th of November, in response to the MPs expenses scandal. A giant 10 foot duckhouse (the original which was purchased by Sir Peter Viggers and has come to epitomise the absurdity of the expenses crisis) was floated down the river on Bonfire Night. Activists dressed as ducks, waved placards with various messages on them such as Dont Duck Change, Stop Ducking with Democracy and Duck House, Democratic House?. The stunt was a resounding success and gained much media publicity. More information on the Vote for a Change campaign can be found at
  • Oliva - Part 1 Olivia is based on what is perhaps the most civilised and delicate girly-girl book ever written in Telluria, also called Olivia and written by Miss Dorothy Bussy Strachey, the sister of Lytton Strachey.

  • North Korea National Anthem North Korea (Democratic People's Republic of Korea) shares borders with China, the Sea of Japan, the Yellow Sea and the demilitarised zone (separating it from the Republic of Korea). North Korea's capital, Pyongyang, was completely rebuilt after the Korean War as a city of wide avenues, neatly designed parks and enormous marble public buildings. The Palace of Culture, the Grand Theatre, the Juche Tower and the Ongrui Restaurant epitomise the Korean variant of Communist architecture. The Gates of Pyongyang and the Arch of Triumph (built in honour of Kim Il-Sung's 70th birthday) are particularly impressive. ********** This description is from WORLDTRAVELGUIDE. • Ireland Ireland is the third-largest island in Europe and the twentieth-largest island in the world. It lies to the north-west of continental Europe and is surrounded by hundreds of islands and islets. To the east of Ireland is the island of Great Britain, separated from it by the Irish Sea. The Republic of Ireland covers five-sixths of the island. Northern Ireland, a part of the United Kingdom, covers the remainder and is located in the northeast of the island. The population of Ireland is estimated to be 6.2 million. Slightly less than 4.5 million are estimated to live in the Republic of Ireland and slightly less than 1.8 million are estimated to live in Northern Ireland. This is a significant increase from a modern historic low of 4.2 million in the 1960s but still much lower than the peak population of over 8 million in the early 19th century prior to the Great Famine. Relatively low-lying mountains surrounding a central plain epitomise Ireland's geography with several navigable rivers extending inland. The island has lush vegetation, a product of its mild but changeable oceanic climate, which avoids extremes in temperature. Thick woodlands covered the island until the 1600s. Today, it is the most deforested area in Europe. Twenty-six mammal species are native to Ireland, with some, such as the red fox, hedgehog and badger, being very common. Others, like the Irish hare, red deer and pine marten are less so. A Norman invasion in the Middle Ages gave way to English domination ...
