Forensic Entomology Case This was for our chem project... not the best quality, but what can I say? We filmed for three hours, and the video camera my friend had wasn't compatible with my laptop. So we ended up hooking hers up to her widescreen tv and recording the tv with my little Point and Shoot video camera (we then finished later). So forgive the poor quality.

Entomology Jakob or Jacob Christian Gottlieb Schäffer or Schäffern (30 May 1718 - 5 January 1790) was a German dean, professor, botanist, mycologist, entomologist, ornithologist and inventor. In 1759, Schäffer published 'Erleichterte Artzney-Kräuterwissenschaft', a handbook of botany and the medicinal effects of plants for doctors and pharmacists. From 1762 to 1764, he wrote four richly illustrated volumes on mycology, 'Natürlich ausgemahlten Abbildungen baierischer und pfälzischer Schwämme, welche um Regensburg wachsen'. In 1774, he wrote 'Elementa Ornithologica', in which he proposed a system of classification of the birds based on the structure of their legs. This work was followed by 'Museum Ornithologicum' in 1789, in which he described the birds in his collection. In 1779, Schäffer published the three-volume work 'Icones insectorum circa ratisbonam indigenorum coloribus naturam referentibus expressae', which included 280 hand-coloured plates of copper engravings, illustrating approximately 3000 insects. An introduction to entomology, 'Elementa entomologica', followed in 1789. The hand-coloured drawings shown in this video are taken from 'Abhandlungen von Insecten' (1760-70) Music by Lanois, 'Tension Block'.

Justin & Duen visit Bishop Museum's Entomology Department Stalk Eyed Fly Scorpions Walking Sticks Justin and Duen visited Bishop Museum's Entomology Department on 27 March 2009. They have 13.5 million bugs!! Amazing! I was especially pleased to discover that they had a nice collection of stalk-eyed flies, which I believe have better stereoscopic vision. I therefore presume they are predators. Justin really liked the scorpions. Bishop Museum is located in Honolulu, HI This was a special behind the scenes tour by Shar, a staff member of the museum. I won this tour at my orchestra's Christmas Party's silent auction. Shar and I (Duen) both play violin.

Meet the Entomologists at the ***rell Butterfly Center There is never a shortage of cool jobs at HMNS - fossil hunter, bug chef, snow wrangler just to name a few - but Erin and Laurie, entomologists and cheif caretakers for all our live insects - are probably in pretty stiff competition for the all-time coolest job award. On top of raising exotic insects like giant katydids and Madagascar hissing ***roaches and caring for butterflies from chrysalid to conservatory, they also get to experience the awesome combination of kids + creepy crawlies with their Bugs on Wheels program. In the video below, they'll take you behind the scenes of the ***rell Butterfly Center and through their typical day - from feeding the insects to getting the butterflies ready to flutter - plus show you some amazing insects up close. The PAST Foundation: 2010 Entomology - Historical and Current Impacts The CHALLENGE: Insects have significantly impacted humanity since before the dawn of civilization, particularly agricultural development and public health. Colonies and countries failed due to agricultural pests, empires collapsed as a result of diseases transmitted by insects. Today entire industries are dependent on insects for their products. In the 1950s and 1960s, experts believed pesticide would eliminate insect disease vectors and agricultural pests, but this approach failed. Bed bugs, African sleeping sickness caused by tsetse flies, and mosquito transmitted malaria persist. Science education and the field of entomology may hold many of our answers, so how can we explore how insects alter human development and progress? The SOLUTION: An immersion program, exploring multiple facets of entomology where students perform basic laboratory experiments on insect physiology and design and conduct experiments that will take them into the field to collect specimens at locations throughout Ohio using collecting techniques essential for assessing the ecological quality of aquatic and terrestrial environments as well as the locale's value in monitoring agricultural pest and insect pests. A fieldtrip to the Cincinnati Zoo, famous for its insect displays, will help place the diversity of insects worldwide. The week will culminate with student presentations that integrate the National Research Council's four "Big Ideas"; 1) The role of evolution regarding diversity and life; 2 ...

(Leo Kottke) The Spanish Entomologist - Bert Bouwhuis Cover of Leo Kottke's "The Spanish Entomologist" in Open G tuning on electric guitar. While listening to this tune in the past, I was always impressed by Leo's extreme speed. So while recording I tried very hard to play really fast. And as a result, I'm actually way too fast, something I never considered possible Listen to the original on Kottke's album "Greenhouse".

How can the study of entomology assist crime investigators? Dr. Felix Sperling talks about maggots, flies, and corpses. A corpse left undisturbed can form the foundation of a fly and insect ecosystem which can be 'read' by an entomologist to uncover facts, such as how long it has been since the time of death.
