Feeding the birds OASIS early in life can lead to benefits at this later time, because early nutrition affects the growth of microorganisms that colonize the gut of the bird. If birds are not fed, their intestines respond by producing mucus, which is a breeding ground for opportunistic pathogens — such as clostridium. This sets the stage for enteric disease later in life.
