  • What is Electron? What is Electron?The electron is one of the fundamental "building blocks" that Universe is made of. It was discovered in 1897 by the English physicist Joseph John Thomson. Electrons are related to other similar "building blocks", the protons. Both are very tiny, and make up the Universe. The smallest particle of dust contains millions and millions of electrons and protons. So, just imagine how many they are in a whale or dolphin. Electrons and protons have equal but opposite signs of electric charges: electrons are negative and protons are positive. Opposite charges are always attracted to each other. You can see it if you bring together a pair of magnets. Ends of magnets with different poles are attracted and "stick" to each other. The ends of the same sign recoil from each other. Thus, as electrons and protons have different signs, they are attracted to each other. This attraction acts as the glue of the microcosm, bonding the matter of the universe. Lightning also consists of a chain of moving electrons - this time they move between the clouds and the ground. These are some examples of the untamed, wild power of electricity.
