  • Alligators and red-eared sliders on the UL Lafayette campus morayeel.louisiana.edu American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) and red-eared sliders (Trachemys scripta elegans) are common reptiles that can be seen sunning and swimming in the bald cypress (Taxodium distichum) swamp ("Cypress Lake") on the campus of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. The epizoic green macroalga Basicladia crassa (Cladophoraceae, Cladophorales) grows exclusively on the turtles' carapaces. Interestingly, the young alligator shown here uses a large turtle as a "pillow" to rest his head. Normally, these red-eared sliders are a common food source for the alligators. Filmed by Suzanne Fredericq on July 5th, 2008.

  • Long-eared Jerboa: extraordinary desert creature ZSL releases the first known footage of the long-eared jerboa in the wild, an extraordinary mammal found in the deserts of Mongolia and China. The tiny creature looks like a mouse-sized kangaroo with enormous ears. You can see more video footage of the Jerboa on the EDGE website This endangered animal was filmed during a recent ZSL expedition to the Mongolian Gobi desert to track down and assess the species. The long-eared jerboa is a small rodent that can be easily distinguished by its giant ears, which are about one third bigger than its head, and its legs, which are specially adapted for jumping like a kangaroo. Currently, the species is classified as Endangered on the IUCN Red List, with habitat disturbance the species' key threat. ZSL were privileged to film individual jerboas in their natural environment and study their behaviour. The species is one of those highlighted by ZSL's EDGE programme, which focuses its efforts on species that are Evolutionarily Distinct and Globally Endangered. Dr Jonathan Baillie, ZSL Head of Field Conservation and leader of the expedition, commented, "The footage and images from this expedition really are extraordinary, and incredibly charming. The long-eared jerboa is a bit like the Mickey Mouse of the desert, cute and comic in equal measure. When people see ZSL's footage of this tiny threatened creature I am convinced they will want to get involved in its conservation. Unfortunately, it is just one of many ...

  • red eared slider turtle tank habitat 125 gal custom aquarium My 125 Gallon turtle tank. Home made canopy, overflow and wet dry bucket trickle filter system, low maintenance and very clean. two red eared slider turtles with 5 gold fish and 5 minnows. Built entire system for about $400, got tank and stand almost free off craigs list, had to reenforce stand and paint black to match decor. Rocks I got from construction left overs (free). They love their new basking area and large area to swim around. Tank is undersized by 15 - 25 gallons of water since its 10 gal for every inch of turle so next tank will need to be bigger once they grow a bit more.

  • Virginia's Endangered Rafinesque's Big-eared Bat Join Department biologist JD Kleopfer on a survey of the state endangered Rafinesque's big-eared bat. This video highlights two of only three known nursery roosts of this species in Virginia --one roost is in an old general store, the other in a turn of the century one-room schoolhouse. This "swamp bat" traditionally nests in old growth trees in southeastern Virginia's wetlands, which constitutes the northernmost portion of their range, but will also roost in barns and outbuildings. These summer-time roosts are nursery colonies made up of mothers and "pups" or young. Biologists are studying them to learn more in order protect them and the old structures they inhabit. Rafinesque's big-eared bats feed mostly on moths, found near agricultural fields. Bats eat millions of nighttime flying insects such as mosquitoes and are beneficial to humans. To learn more about this bat, visit the VDGIF Web site at www.dgif.virginia.gov

  • Tiger oscar and red eared slider riparium setup update 3 I just moved my tiger oscar to my upper 55 gallon tank, he has more space there and the koi that is shown in the video is already sold and will be rehomed in a couple of days, for now the oscar doesn't seem to mind the koi. The oscar is abour 8 months old and is close to 8 inches long. He eats shrimp, pellets, fish fillet and sometimes scallops. the turtle eats mostly veggies and calcium powder covered turtle pellets. the turtle has a 40 watt basking heat lamp right over the basking platform thats made of silicone covered cork. there are two repti-glo 5.0 lightbulbs to provide UVA/UVB rays for the turtle, plus additional 5500k compact fluorescent lightbulbs to help the plants grow. the plants are mostly red mangroves that I have had for a year, a few lucky bamboo shoots, a few pothos vines recently planted in the planter, along with an arrowhead plant. I am hoping to have more plants in the next update. the filtration is done by an odyssea cfs 500 canister filter which has the flow rate of 500 gallons per hour, giving a nice current to water surface. It is connected to an underground filter tray with a 4 point pvc adaptor that I put together myself. Clean-up is easy, I do minimal scrubbing because most of the light is absorbed by the plants. I just do a weekly water change of about %30-40 of the water. I'm hoping to have a few new tankmates in the future but for now they're growing out in other tanks.

  • Feeding my red eared slider turtles Common Name: Red-eared slider, red-eared terrapin, elegant terrapin Distinguishing Features: Red-eared sliders can be distinguished from all other North American turtles by the presence of a broad red stripe behind the eye. Some specimens, especially older males, become melanistic or black, which makes identification difficult (Dundee and Rossman, 1989; Conant and Collins, 1991; Tucker et al., 1995). Similar Species: Red-eared sliders, Trachemys scripta elegans, are similar to yellowbelly sliders, T. scripta scripta, which naturally occur from southeast Virginia to northern Florida. Yellowbelly sliders can be distinguished by having yellow markings behind their eyes instead of the red marking red-eared sliders possess (Conant and Collins, 1991). Biology: Red-eared sliders prefer quiet water with a muddy bottom and abundant vegetation, but they are also rarely found in moving waters. They can frequently be seen basking on rocks, logs, vegetation masses, and on banks (Mount, 1975; Behler, 1979; Dundee and Rossman, 1989; Conant and Collins, 1991). Although mortality rates are high among the young, adults are believed to live as long as 50-75 years (Dundee and Rossman, 1989). Temperature: This species is sensitive to cold temperatures over the northern portion of its range. Hatchlings overwinter in their nests. Packard et al. (1997) suggested this species may be limited towards the north of its range, in Illinois, by the depth of soil freezes in the winter. Isolated ...

  • Red Eared Slider Turtle Feeding Time Yeah just feeding my hungry red ear slider turtle. I trained this guy so he is used to my presence. If I put my hand in the water he would bite, thinking I was food. He also eats fruits, worms and other food that turtles naturaly eat. There are also other turtles living in this pond, two small ones and one big one similar size to the one that you see in the video. They are a bit camara and people shy because they are new. There are also fishes in this pond, koi, goldfish and shubunkins. The shubunkins spawned this spring and the fry have grown significantly since then. There are about 10 to 20 of them. Most the time the fish hide in the shade of the grape vine. There are also plants, Hardy water lily, water hyacinth, anacharis, and cattails. The cattails are covered by the grapvines. The Lilies are enclosed inside the netting to protect them from being consumed by the hungry turtles. Any questions and comments feel free to ask.
