  • Henry IV, Part 2 (1990, Michael Bogdanov) part 5 of 15 Shakespeare's "King Henry IV, Part 2" from "The War of the Roses" (English Shakespeare Company, UK, 1990) is a direct filming, from the stage, of Michael Bogdanov and Michael Pennington's 7-play sequence based on Shakespeare's history plays. Falstaff - Barry Stanton Falstaff's Page - John Tramper Mistress Quickly - June Watson Bardolph - Colin Farrell (actor born 1938) Poins - Charles Dale Doll Tearsheet - Francesca Ryan Director Michael Bogdanov From Charles Cowden Clarke's"Shakespeare-Characters" : With the genial spirit in which his sweet nature was conceived, Shakespeare contrives to throw in some dash of feeling—a motion of our common humanity—some extenuation, even in his worst characters; for, whatever they were besides, they were also men, and unmitigated evil belongs only to the origin of all evil—not to human nature. With the accurate perception, however, of true morality, he has not imparted to the character of Falstaff—attractive as it is for its sociality, wit, humour, and imagination—any of those intrinsic qualities which would set him up as an object of imitation—of course in his convivialities, his roystering, and other laxities; but he has associated them with the meaner vices of profligacy, turning these to the fullest account in completing the character. Gross as the knight is, and wonderfully as the poet has relieved that grossness by the most brilliant flashes of wit and drollery, no mortal, it is to be presumed, ever arose from reading the plays in ...

But it may be observed that in Feudal ages rank and wealth were not only connected with the point of honour, but with personal strength and natural courage With respect to every infirmity, except that of Cowardice, we must take him as at the period in which he is represented to us. If we see him dissipated, fat,- it is enough;- we have nothing to do with his youth, when he might perhaps have been modest, chaste, 'and not an Eagle's talon in the waist.' But Constitutional Courage extends to a man's whole ...

  • The Art of the Pantomime Dame: Jack Tripp (1922 - 2005) Filmed in 1982. Jack Tripp (February 4, 1922 - July 10, 2005) was a British comic actor best known for his many performances as a pantomime dame. He was one of the most popular pantomime dames of the post-war period; a master of drollery and pathos, and a stylish, if eccentric, dancer, he was once described by the Stage as "the John Gielgud of pantomime dames". Tripp's talents as a comic actor were not confined to the pantomime, but he will forever be associated with turning the role of dame into an art form. He played the part some 35 times, in the tradition of such classic dames as George Lacy and Douglas Byng. Never crude or over made-up, and always daintily dressed in lace-trimmed gingham, bloomers and immaculate white pinafores, he had a range of comic expressions - from a wide grin and a grimly pursed mouth to archly raised eyebrows - that said more than any smutty remark. The only performer ever to be appointed MBE for "services to pantomime", Tripp worked at every role with the seriousness of a Shakespearean actor. "Mother Goose," he would say, "is the Hamlet of pantomimes." He excelled at physical comedy, particularly knockabout routines, and he was a devotee of mimetic comedy. He first came to pantomime in the 1950s, initially playing the dame's son opposite Douglas Byng. But Tripp was soon promoted to dame and by the 1990s he had performed in all the traditional pantomime stories. His final panto appearances were as Nurse Ribena in *** in the Wood (Sadlers ...

  • Wrong Place Wrong Time hahahahah.... that is really funny.. A sense of humour is the ability to experience humour, a quality which all people share, although the extent to which an individual will personally find something humorous depends on a host of absolute and relative variables, including geographical location, culture, maturity, level of education, and context. For example, young children (of any background) may possibly favour slapstick, such as Punch and Judy puppet shows or cartoons eg Tom and Jerry. Satire may rely more on understanding the target of the humour, and thus tends to appeal to more mature audiences.[citation needed] Non-satirical humor can be specifically termed "recreational drollery".

  • Funny Face - Ha,Ha,Ha - Humor,Grimace,Humour,Laughter,Balkan Bugi,Balkan Ekspres Humour or humor (see spelling differences) is the tendency of particular cognitive experiences to provoke laughter and provide amusement. The term derives from the humoral medicine of the ancient Greeks, which taught that the balance of fluids in the human body, known as humours (Latin: umor, "body fluid"), control human health and emotion. People of all ages and cultures respond to humour. The majority of people are able to experience humour, ie, to be amused, to laugh or smile at something funny, and thus they are considered to have a sense of humour. The hypothetical person lacking a sense of humour would likely find the behaviour induced by humour to be inexplicable, strange, or even irrational. Though ultimately decided by personal taste, the extent to which an individual will find something humorous depends upon a host of variables, including geographical location, culture, maturity, level of education, intelligence and context. For example, young children may favour slapstick, such as Punch and Judy puppet shows or cartoons such as Tom and Jerry. Satire may rely more on understanding the target of the humour and thus tends to appeal to more mature audiences. Nonsatirical humour can be specifically termed "recreational drollery".[1][2] Many theories exist about what humour is and what social function it serves. The prevailing types of theories attempting to account for the existence of humour include psychological theories, the vast majority of which consider humour ...

  • Petri Dish Circus (MWV12) See the history of microbiology in nine scenes of gags, burlesque, drollery and song. Produced by Active Cultures, the vernacular theatre of Maryland, Petri Dish Circus is a play loosely based off of the classic non fiction novel Microbe Hunters by Paul Henry de Kruif. Much like the original book first published in 1926 that describes 12 historical milestones in science, Active Cultures reenacts "the daring-do of Louis Pasteur in his Parisian lab, the Scotch fortitude of Ronald Ross as he travels through disease-stricken Africa, and the melancholy saga of Walter Reed as he battles Yellow Jack in Cuba" - all with a healthy dose of humor. In this episode we interview Mary Resing, artistic director for Active Cultures, who talks about Microbe Hunters as inspiration for theatre and her whimsical, and slightly pointed, approach to portraying the women featured in de Kruif's work. Excerpts from the actual performance are also featured.
