  • What's different about video stories for mobile phones? Multimedia content doyens are wracking their brains for more profitable distribution methods for TV and film - methods that will avert piracy, allow audience behavior tracking and restore the 30 second ad spot's revenue generating potency against fragementing audiences. But while the producers struggle to deal with technology changes, the content creators are feeling their way towards a new "science" of content - one that allows the interactive, mobile and small-screen nature of the contemporary world to actually change the nature of the stories that are told. Netvideo recently spoke with the Managing Director of one such company, the UK's Magic Lantern. Its MD, Anthony Lilley (pictured right with Netvideo's Jason Romney), is a former theatre director and lawyer. Today, he is MD of one of the world's most imaginative and prolific new media content creation companies. One example of Magic Lantern's work is the FourDocs video upload server that allows documentary film makers to upload and thus distribute and monetise their 4 minute works via Channel 4. But as well as providing business smarts and corporate leadership, Lilley hugs the coal face with his company's content producers and dreams up actual content projects. In this interview, Anthony Lilley talks about his company's new formats and story types, developed specifically for the mobile, small screen world. He profiles work on the BBC drama Spooks and children's TV properties. But he says the famous children's books ...
  • Gitanjali: Song 74 "Aar naire bela namlo chhaya" To the average Bengali this song refers to a bunch of village belles going to the river bank to fetch their daily water. But when you tear apart the "sanchari" (last verse) of this song, the hidden message comes out differently. Tagore had painted a scene using words like "bijan path e" (lonely path) , "prem nadite uThechhe dheu..." (in the river of love there are rampant waves), and also thrown in a surrealistic hint with "bajay bina taranite" (plays a lute while upon a boat.) Now, here is an *** background information (as stated by Nirad C. Chaudhury) that Tagore had plugged in this song: In nine*** century rural Bengal the ***ual cravings of married women would be appeased during their daily evening jaunts away from their homes to the river bank, where virile young men from neighboring villages would be awaiting their arrival. The women would "hook up" with men of their own choice and return home ***ually satiated, to their unaware husbands. Some would even wish never to return home again, should they find a satisfactory lover. Hence the lines in the poem "jani na ar phirbo ki na, kar sathe aaj habe chinaa..." Unfortunately, most Bengali artistes when they sing this song (and their audience) are oblivious of the fact that the song represents the ***ual arousal in women; verisimilar to that of Radha pining for extramarital *** with Lord Krishna. Ergo, even doyens like Kanika Bannerjee and Ritu Guha have recorded it as sung in a slow tempo. One would expect a faster ...

  • MSUniversity Hostel "I do not know what the future holds.....But I do know who holds the future....It's the youth of the country.." This video here, is an instance where the youth did not succumb to the politics and injustice of the university officials but revolted and brought about a change. The video is the culmination of the movement that ensued to change the stance of the university, ie to shut down two halls of residence [hostels for boys] on the pretext of low student intake. The university officials thought the students could be fooled into it. On the contrary, MSU saw one of the biggest student movement post the 1974. Nav-nirman andolan. Despite several requests and hunger strikes when the university officials were not moved by the pleading of the students to make a representation to the Vice-Chancellor, more than 1000 students staged a dharna and gheroed the VC on 15.08.04 during the Independence Day ceremony at university grounds. The officials petrified by the gathered youth ran hither and thither. It was indeed a sight to behold. These very doyens of university who had disregarded the two months of peaceful movement and silent voices for the students now were scared like rabbits and not able to address or placate the students. The students however did not become an unruly mob and as the video shows were patient without being violent. Its time youth got together on other issues in a serious manner like they did here. Lets vote. Everyone may have their own views and interpretation ...
