E1.5. Joint, marginal and conditional distributions (and Bayes' Rule) In this video, I define joint, marginal and conditional distributions (pmfs or pdfs). I motivate these definitions using a simple example of two discrete random variables and their joint distribution. After motivating all three types of distributions, I discuss two aspects of these concepts that are important for econometrics: independence and Bayes' Rule. In the discussion of independence, I offer a useful test for detecting non-independence of random variables. In the discussion of Bayes' Rule, I actually derive the formula from formulas for conditional probabilities and marginal probabilities. My derivation relies heavily on the intuition that I use to introduce these concepts earlier in the video.

MaximsNewsNetwork HAITI: FOOD DISTRIBUTION TO DESPERATE CROWDS OF PEOPLE (WFP) (UN MINUSTAH) MaximsNewsNetwork: 15 January 2010 - UN MINUSTAH- WFP - Port-au-Prince, Haiti - The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) continued its distribution of food rations today (15 January) to crowds desperate for help, three days after the devastating earthquake that rocked the Haitian capital. People camping at a makeshift tent wrestled over the meal rations distributed by WFP in a chaotic scene that included pushing and shoving as tempers flared up. 8000 people were the beneficiaries at 4 distribution points in Port au Prince as part of its plan to feed 2 million people and provide logistical support for a 6-month Emergency Operation. SOUNDBITE (French) Nancy Exilas, WFP Coordinator Port au Prince: It is getting more and more complicated, because the need is getting higher. But that is usual. The people also did not understand yet that these are high energy biscuits, they are fortified with vitamins, the expiry date is November 2010 and they taste differently than the usual biscuits. In the initial phase of the operation, WFP will provide one-week rations of ready-to-eat food to up to 2 million people who no longer have access to kitchens or cooking facilities. After the distribution of the ready-to-eat food rations, WFP will begin general distributions of basic food items such as rice, pulses and cooking oil to 2 million people. As soon as possible, WFP will move from general food distributions towards food for work activities that use food as an incentive for people to ...

Terms about distributions: PDF, PMF and CDF Distributions characterize random variables. Random variables are either discrete (PMF) or continuous (PDF). About these distributions, we can ask either an "equal to" (PDF/PMF) question or a "less than" question (CDF). But all distributions have the same job: characterize the random variable.
Student's t distribution The small sample is a 10-day series of Google's daily periodic returns. The question is, with 95% confidence, what is the true (population) average return? This is the essence of statistics, based on sample statistics (sample mean, sample variance) we are trying to infer population parameters (population mean).

Unpaid distributions to bucket company update Trust Deed? Question: Some years ago you suggested that unpaid distributions from Family Trusts to the bucket company end up as loans. If so, these loans are subject to Division 7A. Thanks to the ATOs draft ruling TR 2009/D8 we are now on the eve of these unpaid present entitlements being classed as loans under Division 7A. If we need Division 7A loan agreements can we rely on the loan agreement contained in the Brett Davies Lawyers bucket company constitution?

Market Notes, Russian Wheat, Retail Distribution, Adam Smith We have a strange kind of "distribution" that occurred. Normally distribution takes place as institutions liquidate stock to hapless consumers. This time around individuals have been forced to liquidate stocks to cover expenses leaving institutors to trade among themselves in black boxes and high frequency trading. This asymmetric distributions makes the market extremely vulnerable both to a downward crash and also to an upward intervention. The fundamental news continues to be disastrous. Putting my ears to the rails I am hearing about lawyers getting fired and downsized, bankers unable to write loans, and doctors being overrun by malpractice insurance. I go on to highlight the grain problem in Russia and its relation to personal considerations such as food storage and the price of food. Beyond that the food shortage has implications for the great landmass of Europe(Africa) and the East as well as the Great Sea Empire of the United States. In the US we have key economic obomites bugging out leaving the ship into an economic policy where only dirty dirk Geithner and Bubble Ben remain. I talk about Adam Smiths invisible hand being tied to military projection and the wealth of nations.
