ECE Day '08 - Kuznetsov Thesis Electromyographic (EMG) signals are electrical signals that originate in the brain and control the force generating capacity and movements of muscles. These signals consist of trains of superimposed electric pulses known as Motor Unit Action Potentials (MUAPs). Detailed ***ysis of the behavior of the MUAP can provide improved understanding of how the muscle is controlled during both normal and dysfunctional states. A surface sensor, which consists of an array of electrodes that are placed on the skin above the muscle, is being developed. This project developed hardware and software tools and techniques in order to improve the design of these sensors by providing a means to study the effect of various sensor parameters, such the dimensions and geometrical arrangement of electrodes on the ability of the sensor to acquire sEMG signals with distinguishable MUAPs. The new system was used to investigate relationship between the inter-electrode spacing of a surface sensor and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the acquired signals on the distinguishability of MUAPs in the sEMG signals. The signals were acquired from contractions of the First Dorsal Interosseous (FDI) muscle of the hand and the Vastus Lateralis (VL) muscle of the leg using a surface sensor with three sets of inter-electrode spacings. Results showed that while the performance of the sensor on the FDI was not affected by either of the 2.5mm, 6 mm, and 10 mm inter- electrode spacings tested, the performance of the ...
