President Signs Cocaine Disparity Law Washington - President Obama signed a law today designed to change the way that crack and powder cocaine are handled in court The Fair Sentencing Act is "a bipartisan bill to help right a longstanding wrong by narrowing sentencing disparities between those convicted of crack cocaine and powder cocaine," Obama said last week in a speech to the National Urban League. "It's the right thing to do." The law targets what the Drug Policy Alliance calls the problem of the 100-to-1 ratio. Previously, a person caught with five grams of crack cocaine would receive a mandatory sentence of five years -- that same person would have to possess at least 500 grams of powder cocaine to earn the same sentence. This discrepancy tended to fall harder on African-Americans, who are charged more often with crimes involving crack cocaine. US Income Disparity Highest Ever The latest US Census Bureau figures indicate an unprecedented income gap between the richest and poorest Americans. And, those figures are causing concern among social workers that the disparity could have an impact on the overall well-being of American society.

Wealth disparity could get worse The gaps in after-tax income between the richest 1 percent of Americans and the middle and poorest fifths of the country more than tripled between 1979 and 2007 (the period for which these data are available), according to data the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) issued last week. Taken together with prior research, the new data suggest greater income concentration at the top of the income scale than at any time since 1928.

Dr. Hicks addresses cultural cancer disparities Dr. William Hicks, MD, professor of clinical internal medicine at The Ohio State University Medical Center and oncologist at the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute, addressing cultural cancer disparities. Approximately seven years ago I was given the opportunity to join The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center as its Co-Director of Diversity Enhancement. That was an opportunity that was too good to pass up. It was an opportunity to hopefully have an impact on a problem that Im passionate about and thats the problem of cancer disparity in our country. The cancer disparity is quite impressive. In the United States, African-Americans die approximately 33 percent more frequently than do non-African-Americans as a result of cancer. Some cancers are even more striking. We have a program called Grandmas Hands, which is a program designed to teach women, older women, about cancer. We teach them about cancer prevention, appropriate cancer screening and to be more aware consumers of cancer help when they need it. And these folks who are taught then go out into the community and teach others. We have an interactive radio program encouraging our listeners to call with questions or comments regarding timely topics that relate to cancer; this program is called Its All About Health. This program allows us to make sure that we feature at least one clinical trial thats currently available at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer ...
