Nicolae Paulescu the true discoverer of insulin Nicolae Constantin Paulescu was born on November 8th, 1869 in Bucharest and died on July 19th, 1931. He got a PhD degree in medicine and sciences in Paris and conducted a remarkable activity in physiological research, especially the study of glucide metabolism, diabetes pathogenesis, pancreas's role in nutritive intake, blood coagulation and the sudden death mechanism. In 1906 he developed an original method of hypophyseal excision in dogs, which would subsequently be applied to studies on humans. At the July 23rd session of the Biology Society held in 1921, Nicolae Paulescu presented the outcomes of four studies he had conducted on pancreas in diabetic subjects. Paulescu published his findings on the antidiabetic active principle in the pancreas, which he called pancrein, also in the Belgian magazine Archives Internationales de Physiologie in an article issued on August 31st, 1921. These publications had come 8 months before the team made up of Canadian doctors Frederick Banting and Charles Best, Scottish doctor John James MacLeod and Canadian biochemist James Collip with the Toronto University announced their discovery of insulin. However, the Nobel prize for physiology and medicine was awarded to the Toronto team. Although he vehemently contested the practices of the Canadians, Paulescu failed to be credited with discovering insulin.

Graham Han*** - Co-Discoverer Of DNA Says Our Genes Were Planted Here By Aliens-Directed Panspermia Francis Crick, the Nobel Prize-winning father of modern genetics, was under the influence of LSD when he first deduced the double-helix structure of DNA nearly 50 years ago. Crick later told a fellow scientist that he often used small doses of LSD, then an experimental drug used in psychotherapy, to boost his powers of thought. He said it was LSD, not the english Eagles warm beer, that helped him to unravel the structure of DNA, the discovery that won him the Nobel Prize. Crick and his associate Orgel, suggested that directed panspermia might help resolve one or two anomalies in the biochemistry of life-forms on Earth. One of these was the puzzling dependence of biological systems on molybdenum. Many enzymes, for example, require this metal to act as a cofactor. Such a situation would be easier to understand if molybdenum were relatively abundant on Earth. However, its abundance is only 0.02% compared with 0.2% and 3.16%, respectively, for the metals chromium and nickel, which are chemically similar to molybdenum. Crick and Orgel commented: If it could be shown that the elements represented in terrestrial living organisms correlate with those abundant in some types of star-molybdenum stars, for example-we might look more sympathetically on "infective" theories. Stanislav Grof wrote, "The probability that human intelligence developed all the way from the chemical ooze of the primeval ocean solely through random sequences of random mechanical processes has been aptly ...

Ivana - Discoverer The first song from REM's new album Collapse Into Now. "Discoverer" was tricky to transcribe for piano, because Peter Buck and Scott McCaughey use lots of chiming power chords (ie chords without thirds) and Michael Stipe often sings "blue" notes. Since piano is a tempered instrument, these are impossible to reproduce, so I had to constantly make decisions where to use major and minor chords. Oh, and I transposed the song from B major to B flat major, because it was easier to play. :))) Music by REM (Buck/Mills/Stipe) Arranged for piano and performed by Ivana UPDATE: on 18 February 2011, this video was featured on REMHQ Many thanks to the band and everyone at the headquarters, especially Mr David Bell; this is a huge honour for me. :)

1960: Discoverer 14 (USA) A space technology programme called Discoverer saw its first test launches in early 1959. The first launch with a camera was June 1959 as Discoverer 4, which was a 750 kg satellite launched by a Thor-Agena rocket. The satellites returned film canisters to Earth in capsules, called "buckets", which were recovered in mid-air by a specially equipped aircraft during their parachute descent (they were designed to float in water for a short period of time, and then sink, if the mid-air recovery failed). The first camera-fitted Discoverer missions failed to return usable film, but following repeated recovery tests on 18 August 1960 with Discoverer 14, a bucket was successfully retrieved two days later by a C-119.

Darleane Hoffmann Berkeley Lab Element Discoverer Modern Day Marie Curie ACS Pt2 Darleane Christenson Hoffmann IS a "Modern Day Marie Curie"...AND SOME! Not only is she the sweetest but has really earned that nickname! She was named as the director of the Los Alamos Lab in 1957 and raised a family (as they said women couldn't possibly do in 'those days'). From Ames Iowa she ended up with Al Ghiroso and Glenn Seaborg and has been in on more element discoveries to her credit than probably only five or so people EVER. I'm going off the top of my head here but I remember she was still 'perturbed' to say the least, that she was held up with red tape thanks to (Bradford???Los ALamos lab wouldn't clear her security so she missed out on that first element discovery!) but she had her day... She's considered the leading authority if you will on Thorium in the earth (and her Scandanavium maiden name I have to ask her about that one with THOR coming out soon.!) more later. Oh yeah back in the 90's when I ws up on this I heard from a reliable source (just as the element debacle of #118 and #116-which was fudged Victor Nunov-forget spelling? I can't recall meeting him but have somewhere-he still is getting hisa name on elements that I find haven't even been verified adn IUPAC has them on their web's periodic table!-THEY NEED TO BE VERIFIED BEFORE YOU PRINT! #112 is the highest one-See Glenn Seaborg and Hahnium-Du"b"nium controversy I was caught in the middle of! I was gonna push for (after #118 named for Al Ghiroso) to have #116 named in her honor (since Ho was ...

REM- Discoverer TRACK REVIEW Listen: Holiday songs: 1. Beach House: 2. Jesu: 3. Crystal Stilts: This new track from REM isn't amazing me, but it does have me looking forward to a new album from these guys. Maybe the track will be a little more captivating in the midst of its counterparts. I do like the eerie and jangly sounds coming out if this thing, but it loses its experimental side once the chorus starts building. Some would take that as a good thing, but it just kinda ruins the mood--for me, anyway. What do you think of this song? Love it? Hate it? Excited for this upcoming album? Do you follow REM still? Are they still relevant? Are yoU losing your religion? Do you expect big things for this album? Will the band branch out and reach new listeners, or will this album be "for the fans"? 6/10 http bit.ly bit.ly Like this video for Justice!
