  • JS Bach (1685 - 1750) BWV 19 Soprano Aria Gott schickt uns Mahanaim zu "Es erhub sich ein Streit" (BWV 19) was first performed in 1726 and is the second of three complete surviving cantatas sung at Leipzig on the Feast of St. Michael and All Angels (September 29th). Bach's text was a poem by Christian Friedrich Henrici, better known by his pen-name of Picander. Picander's poem describes in colourfully picturesque terms the fight and the victory of St. Michael and his angels over Satan, personified by the dragon of hell. The story, which is contained in the Epistle for the day, appealed to 18th century imagination and particularly, perhaps, to that of Bach all of whose settings are rich in depictive imagery. The Cantata begins with a masterly fugal chorus scored for Bach's standard four-part vocal texture with three trumpets, drums, two oboes which double the violins, a taille (cor anglais) doubling the viola, and continuo. It depicts, with confrontational vigour, the conflict between Heaven and Hell whose fiery occupant is "the raging serpent, the infernal dragon" of the text. The two arias which follow, each prefaced by a recitative, proclaim St. Michael's victory, as well as expressing the need for God's protection and a strong faith. The first is for soprano accompanied by two oboes d'amore, the second for tenor - a lyrical piece in 6/8 rhythm - with a single trumpet intoning the melody of Martin Schalling's chorale melody, Herzlich lieb hab ich dich, o Herr". Following a brief soprano recitative the Cantata ends with a verse from the ...

  • Album Review: Saturnalia by The Gutter Twins Another Sub Pop release, this time it's Mark Lanegan ( Queens of the Stone Age, Screaming Trees ) and Greg Dulli (Afgan Whigs) in their newest outfit, The Gutter Twins. Lots of good musicianship and bleak, depictive lyrics. This dark record but by no means a downer to listen. These guys have put out enough albums for their other bands and this collaborative effort really shines as some of their best work. These guys just have great chemistry together and the production is top notch. Very cool. If you like guys who sound like the drink scotch, smoke 2 packs of cigs a day and write really bleak songs without being depressing, this could be for you. 4.1/5 Support YWIR

I'm going to play this piece for my piano-exam next week but decided to upload it. I'm curious what you'll hold of it.

  • Athena: The Goddess Awakens In 1982, a young scultptor began to recreate a monumental 42 foot statue of Athena, the ancient Greek goddess of wisdom and war. The original statue of the same height was sculpted in the fifth century BC by Phidias and graced the interior of the ancient Parthenon on the Acropolis in Athens, Greece. Her disappearance remains a mystery, and now almost 2500 years later the world's only full scale replica emerges through the creative hands and mind of sculptor Alan LeQuire. After a painstaking eight years of research, design, sculpting, and construction, Athena now majestically adorns the Parthenon in Nashville, Tennessee. This is the world's only full scale replica of the ancient building in Athens and the recreated Athena is the largest indoor statue in the western world. This enlightening 50 minute documentary chronicles the eight year history of the making of this statue. Depictive footage details the creation of Athena from conception to completion. In addition, there are informative interviews with world renowned scholars Brunhilde S. Ridgway from Byrn Mawr College and Eve Harrison from New York University, as well as the sculptor himself. This is a project which will be of interest to artists, archaeologists, engineers, art historians, classics scholars, or anyone who appreciates the dedication and perseverance expressed in creating any monumental work of art.

  • WOLF Railroad Redub Since people at my school are starting to recognize my videos, I should explain about the guy that inspired me to do this. This is a guy known on YT as TheRailroadWolf. And as his name emplies, he likes trains & wolves (as well as dogs and other animals like that). But for my classmates to understand this, this guy's series is not depictive of the HUMAN world. It's more depicted of the FURRY world. That's why you see Tramp in 514's cab. BTW for humor values, one of my own HO engines appears towards the end. EDIT: If you think this is like one of David Lynch's films or you don't get it, it'd be very wise to see the original version that this is based on.

  • Comrade Zoya A short video about the lives of Shura (ALexander) Kosmodemyansky and Zoya Kosmodemyanskaya. The narration Zoya's live is mainly based on the testimonies of the villagers of Petrichevo along with narrations of her partisan comrades while Shura's life is mainly based on the Soviet army documents. Finally a vital source of information on both children were the memoirs of their mother. The video aspires to narrate their deeds along with a depictive description on the everyday life and attitude of the people in the Soviet Union. Most people in the West have a falsified opinion about the latter. One prime example is Siberia. Siberia is regarded as a totally hostile environment where life is an absolute torment and where people would be sent there only for punishment. This however cannot explain how this large region was inhabited even before the medieval times. Most westerns find it difficult to understand or even believe that anyone would move there voluntarily. Yet the truth is that during the early Stalin era Siberia was populated more by the mass waves of voluteers than by the few prisoners. The hundreds of new cities that were founded during the early 30's exist even today as they have not been abandoned as somebody would expect from a town that was forcefully founded. The truth is that people from all over the Soviet motherland responded to Stalin's plea for the need for rapid industrial developement and new resources and moved there voluntarily. They worked hard and so ...
  • *** ART BLACK WOMEN Paintings by Miguel Pla; black models; music: George Van Dyck "African Calling". Available original paintings. [email protected] See more: African art constitutes one of the most diverse legacies on earth. Though many casual observers tend to generalize "traditional" African art, the continent is full of peoples, societies, and civilizations, each with a unique visual special culture. The definition also includes the art of the African Diasporas, such as the art of African Americans. Despite this diversity, there are some unifying artistic themes when considering the totality of the visual culture from the continent of Africa. Emphasis on the human figure: The human figure has always been the primary subject matter for most African art, and this emphasis even influenced certain European traditions. For example, in the fif***th century Portugal traded with the Sapi culture near the Ivory Coast in West Africa, who created elaborate ivory saltcellars that were hybrids of African and European designs, most notably in the addition of the human figure (the human figure typically did not appear in Portuguese saltcellars). The human figure may symbolize the living or the dead, may reference chiefs, dancers, or various trades such as drummers or hunters, or even may be an anthropomorphic representation of a god or have other votive function. Another common theme is the inter-morphosis of human and animal. Ife bronze casting of a King, dated around 12th ...
