  • clare Linden Method Testimnials "I began experiencing anxiety when I was at school, I was probably about 13 or 14 years of age. I was always a perfectionist. I wanted to be the best, I wanted to do really well and get top results in all my subjects. One year I hadn't done so well in my exams and the following year they introduced the SAT examinations. I became very, very anxious about the exams, made myself ill and experienced depression. I just thought that I couldn't get through these exams, they just became 'the world' to me. I used to run home from school crying to my mum. I hardly ate - it really, really affected me. Coming up to the exams, I actually experienced my first incident of Depersonalisation. Obviously, back then I didn't know what it was, it was very, very scary for me. I couldn't concentrate, I felt very detached from reality. People would say things to me and I would always have to feign emotions because I wouldn't feel anything. It affected me through my school years because I was always having time off. I didn't feel able to concentrate on my subjects at school and it really, really frightened me. I felt like I was in a 'void', slipping into a black hole. I always use the ***ogy of 'slipping into a hole' and I was trying frantically to get back out of the hole, into the light, into reality and normality. But it was so, so difficult. I found reading the manual really useful, because straight away, reading Charles Linden's story - it was someone I could identify with ...

  • The Clash - Lost in the Supermarket "Lost in the Supermarket" is a 1979 song by The Clash.Written by Joe Strummer and Mick Jones and produced by Guy Stevens, it is credited to the Strummer/Jones songwriting partnership. It was released on their third studio album London Calling. It is the eighth song on the track listing. Although it features Mick Jones on lead vocals, the lyrics were written by Joe Strummer. A slower song than many of the others on the album, its lyrics describe someone struggling to deal with an increasingly commercialised world and rampant consumerism. The song opens with Strummer's autobiographical memories of his parents' home in suburban Warlingham, with a hedge "over which I never could see." With lines such as "I came in here for that special offer - guaranteed personality", the protagonist bemoans the depersonalisation of the world around him. The song speaks of numbers about suburban alienation, the feelings of disillusionment that come through youth in modern society. In the Making of 'London Calling': The Last Testament DVD, released with the 25th anniversary edition of London Calling in 2004, Strummer said he wrote the lyrics imagining Jones' life growing up in a basement with his mother and grandmother.
  • The Mount (c.1997) The Video & Text The text is inspired by Heinrich von Kleist, Clemens Brentano and Ludwig Achim's `Verschiedene Empfindungen vor einer Seelandschaft von Friedrich, worauf ein Kapuziner' (published in the Berliner Abendblätter, 13 October 1810), and the poetry of Rilke. It is a set of meditations upon the role of the Rückenfigur (reversed figure/turned-away figure) in Caspar David Friedrich's work (specifically the Capuchin monk gazing over the sea in Friedrich's `Monk am Meer'(1809) in this instance) and the notion of depersonalisation as effected by viewing such works and/or the sublime in nature. The paintings of Friedrich were filmed in the original at Schloß Charlottenburg (Berlin) and the Hermitage (St. Petersburg). The visuals include several shots taken at the very places where Friedrich painted (eg on the island of Rügen on the Baltic coast), as well as footage shot in Tasmania's mountainous South-West region. The idea behind this was to draw attention to the similarity of much Northern Romantic painting and nine***th-century views of the Australian landscape. Reconstructing these types of images within a video medium demanded an authenticity of source material, recuperating the historical facts of these ways of looking at landscape and the various tropes of romantic vision that they embody. The Music The idea behind `The Mount' was to emulate the sense of romantic yearning so prevalent in nine***th-century music. Although, late in the twentieth century, certain ...
