Mobius * A condensed exegesis* This film was made using: • VHS home video footage from 1998- 2000 • Advertisements accidentally recorded on home videos • A documentary series call 'Australian History' from Vinnie's • Footage recorded around Gerringong on an iphone • Garage band/ iMovie The aim of the film is to: • Explore the links between 'macro' and 'micro' histories and the repetitions and patterns that can be found within them. • Explore Deleuze's concept of 'sheets of time' and the 'crystal image' and how they can be expressed on screen. • Highlight the cyclic nature of existence The worlds depicted in the documentaries I have used ostensibly share very little in common with the world in which I live. That's how we view documentaries, for the spectacle. We look for the differences and distinctions between 'us' and 'them', then we enhance those differences so we can say 'I can't believe they lived like that', or 'I don't understand how people could do such things'. But we can understand, and it comes through examining the commonalities between all people. If we used the similarities found in micro histories to investigate macro histories we could learn, if we recognize in them what we see in ourselves we can begin to understand history, and in turn have an enriched understanding of the present.
