Decomposition of Baby Pigs Dr. Jerry Payne's time lapse movie of the decomposition of a baby pig. For Dr. Payne's account of his work and how he got the dead piglets see The technique of time-lapse photography is employed to illustrate the rapid removal of carrion (4 days reduced to approximately 6 minutes). The film demonstrates the sequence of tissue destruction and the role of insects in the ultimate dismemberment of the pig carcass and soil movement. The pink and purple beads were added to show the intense activities of the insects in moving the carcass and soil. Payne writes..."My study was the first "detailed" study of succession in animal decomposition and the first with the pig as the model. The significance of the pig is that it closely approximates the human body (skin, body hair, size etc.) so the data generated could be used in modern forensic science to approximate the time of human deaths. At that time it was simply not possibly (moral/ethical/legal concerns) to perform decompositon studies with human corpses, I know because I tried and was denied. Even so there were many instances where some concerned person buried my research pigs." The pigs used in the experiment were dead when Jerry Payne picked them up from local farmers. Mama pigs (sows) often lay down on their tiny piglets and crush them. This was very common on small farms and led to the invention and deployment of farrowing pens(birthing pens) where the sow is contained and the piglets have a heated space ...

Decomposition of HgO Here we heat mercuric oxide, wich decomposes at about 500C according to the following reaction: 2 HgO -- 2 Hg + O2 Lavoisier discovered oxygen by this reaction. Mercury condenses in the upper part of the test tube. I'm sorry for the bad video quality, I don't know why this happened. Be careful. the mercury oxide is highly toxic, and mercury vapours (very toxic) are also formed. The waste is also toxic, and must be disposed of in an appropriate manner.

Make "Elephant Toothpaste" - The Decomposition of Hydrogen Peroxide In this video we show the classic science demonstration of "elephant toothpaste". Warning: hydrogen peroxide causes burns, wear gloves. The procedure is very simple, first mix 50mL of detergent with 100mL of 30% hydrogen peroxide. Then add in 10mL of a saturated solution of potassium iodide. The mixture will then produce a massive foam. A variation is to also add 5g of starch to the peroxide mixture. When it foams the foam will have light and dark patches due to the uneven reaction of starch and triodide that forms. Yeast can be used in place of iodide for a slower reaction, but this also allows you to add fluorescent dye to the mixture to make a "glowing elephant toothpaste" when you shine ultraviolet light on it. In all of these experiments what's happening is the hydrogen peroxide is being catalytically decomposed into water and oxygen by the iodide or the yeast. This creates bubbles of oxygen that then foam up due to the detergent.

Sally Davies - McDonald's Happy Meal resists decomposition for six months McDonald's Happy Meal resists decomposition for six months By Brett Michael Dykes Vladimir Lenin, King Tut and the McDonald's Happy Meal: What do they all have in common? A shocking resistance to Mother Nature's cycle of decomposition and biodegradability, apparently. That's the disturbing point brought home by the latest project of New York City-based artist and photographer Sally Davies, who bought a McDonald's Happy Meal back in April and left it out in her kitchen to see how well it would hold up over time. The results? "The only change that I can see is that it has become hard as a rock," Davies told the UK Daily Mail. She proceeded to photograph the Happy Meal each week and posted the pictures to Flickr to record the results of her experiment. Now, just over six months later, the Happy Meal has yet to even grow mold. She told the Daily Mail that "the food is plastic to the touch and has an acrylic sheen to it." [Related: 'Double Down' among the worst fast food of 2010] Davies -- whose art has been featured in numerous films and television shows and is collected by several celebrities -- told The Upshot that she initiated the project to prove a friend wrong. He believed that any burger would mold or rot within two or three days of being left on a counter. Thus began what's become known as "The Happy Meal Art Project." [DIY: Make happier meals for your kids at home -- just don't forget one key tip] "I told my friend about a schoolteacher who's kept a McDonald's burger ...

Rabbit decomposition time-lapse (higher resolution) THIS IS A HIGHER RESOLUTION VERSION OF A PREVIOUSLY UPLOADED VIDEO. Time-lapse video clip of a rabbit decomposing over seven days, compressed down to one minute. It was produced in the forest behind the Digital Frog International office, using a rabbit that was found by the road already dead. We produced the video for a forest ecology program that was never completed as way of demonstrating natural decomposition in a manner that words alone could not describe. It can be a bit disturbing for some, but quite dramatically shows how quickly the process happens, the various insects and organisms who help in decomposition, and goes a long way to explaining why you don't often see the carcasses of dead animals in the woods--they don't last long. Pig Head/Squirrel Attack! Time Lapse Forensic Decomposition Study 720p HD 120-day time lapse of a pig head decomposing, with help from a surprising variety of animals. 1080p HD Stock footage available at V06905a This footage was shot as part of a taphonomic study of the impact of environmental conditions on blunt-force bone trauma. The head specimen shown was purchased from a commercial meat plant and then subjected to 120 days of environmental exposure while being photographed every 3 minutes over a 120 day period. Those 51000+ images were then "thinned-out" so that only the 3100+ images showing significant change remained for this version of the video. While larger predators were prevented from entering the study area so as to avoid them carrying-off the specimen, smaller animals had free access. One of the biggest surprises was how voraciously the Ground Squirrels stripped the remaining tough skin, long after the insects had finished with the soft tissue. Also captured in this sequence are lizards, toads, mice/rats, and a variety of birds. Not suprisingly, nothing is wasted in nature . Studies like these help law enforcement forensic experts learn more about natural processes and environmental effects on tissue and bone, ultimately aiding in identifying human remains, cause/time of death, and may even help solve old cold cases.

Decomposition v3.3 - A demonstration of the extreme perceptual shifts that can occur when mediated reality literally starts to break down, 'Decomposition' is a remix of found footage shot by an unknown amateur filmmaker documenting a trip to a local carnival or amusement park in Rochester, NY circa the 1960s in which the already chemically damaged film is randomly subjected to five cumulative layers of digital distortion (six if you count the original uploader's act of converting the source film to a digital format) and mashed up in real time using Arkaos Grand VJ mixing software. The soundtrack consists of a synthesized organ rendition of the popular song 'Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head' which accompanies a carousel located in New York's Central Park and is also mashed up in tandem with the visuals. Finally, the repetitive droning note at the end is the result of the VJ program crashing during the climax of the performance--an occurrence which happened so consistently during rehearsals that I decided to incorporate it into the piece. Viva la glitch! Special thanks to Chad Hunter for making the source film freely available online
