  • JMidas: A Declarative Multi-Touch Interaction Framework' Over the past few years, multi-touch user interfaces emerged from research prototypes into mass market products mainly driven by innovative devices such as Apple's iPhone or Microsoft's Surface tabletop computer. Unfortunately, there seems to be a lack of abstraction in existing multi-touch software frameworks and often multi-touch application interfaces are based on the hard-coded processing of low level input device events. This leads to proprietary solutions for multi-touch gestures that cannot be reused across different applications or be composed to form more complex gestures. We present Midas, a domain-specific declarative framework for the definition and detection of multi-touch gestures. In our approach, multi-touch gestures are no longer programmed in a procedural manner but rather expressed via logical rules over a set of input facts. We discuss how a rule language-based multi-touch gesture recognition solution simplifies the definition of new multi-touch gestures and supports different tangible application scenarios. • Experiment 2: Declarative Group Motions This video illustrates an experiment done using the authoring environment for dance shows proposed on our previous work entitled ChoreoGraphics. In this example, we explore declarative methods for synthesizing the trajectories and interactions of the dancers on stage. We allow the choreographer to specify different formations by drawing sketches and determining how the dancers will be distributed in or along the drawn lines. To make the dances translate between two formations, we used a bipartite matching algorithm followed by a collision avoidance method. To synthesize the resulting animations, we used several MoCap data leveraging techniques such as motion graphs, interpolations and other signal processing tools.

  • Using NixOS for declarative deployment and testing (Sander v NixOS is a Linux distribution built on top of the Nix package manager, a purely functional package manager. In NixOS, a system configuration is built from a declarative specification capturing the complete system configuration. Moreover, because of the Nix heritage, a user can safely and efficiently install multiple configurations next to each other without interference. This allows users to perform atomic upgrades and rollbacks of a complete Linux distribution. In this talk we explain how we can use NixOS to manage a network of machines by using a declarative specification of a network of NixOS configurations.

  • A Declarative Data Description Language for Managing Ad Hoc Data XML. HTML. CSV. JPEG. MPEG. These data formats represent vast quantities of scientific, governmental and industrial data. In this talk from the University of Washington, Kathleen Fisher describes the PADS data description language created to address this problem.

  • Computer Science and Engineering Distinguished Lecturer: Declarative Networking: "What" is Next Declarative languages allow programmers to say what they want, without worrying over the details of how to achieve it. These kinds of languages revolutionized data management decades ago but have had limited success in other aspects of computing. The story seems to be changing in recent years, however. One new chapter is work that Joe Hellerstein and his colleagues have been pursuing on the design and implementation of declarative languages and runtime systems for network protocol specification. Distributed Systems and Networking appear to be surprisingly natural domains for declarative specifications and they are ripe for a new programming methodology. • Declarative Lamp Project Overview In January of 2007 the city of Boston was partially paralyzed by a bomb scare wherein a number of found electronic devices were seen as potential explosives. The devices featured a number of small flashing lights depicting a cartoon alien performing a crude gesture. Intended to advertise the upcoming season of a popular animated television show, this misadventure in guerilla marketing was perceived as a potential hazard to the population, or, even worse, a terrorist act. The Bomb Squad was called out to destroy the devices, and the city's major traffic paths came to a standstill for most of an afternoon. My first thought upon hearing about the Boston scare was that our fears had gotten the best of us. My next thought was that I needed to address this in my work as an electronic installation artist. The Declarative Lamp Project, created in collaboration with artist Rebecca Stern, uses electronic performance to explore the extent to which fear has been instilled in American culture. Witnesses in a park experience seemingly innocuous electronic pathway lighting that comes alive at dusk with lights and voices in many languages declaring, "I am not a bomb." Because these devices exist in a natural environment and use human voices, I wished to add natural and personal elements to the Lamps' execution. As a child I remember being fascinated by the mathematical equation to calculate air temperature from the frequency of cricket chirps. If one monitors a single chirping cricket ...

It is available in the kinetic-declarativeui branch on gitorious. I set the QFxView viewport to a QGLWidget and recorded with glc. The explosion particles effect was a bit slow without it. Probably needs a lot more optimization :) Really looking forward to the official Qt 4.6 release!... Source code of the game logic itself is only 250 lines! The UI is implemented in a declarative QML language: 180 lines + 26 lines for the explosion particles effect.
