Macintyre^ *Florida Institute of Technology ^Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History Scuba-based observations on coral reefs in the 1960s conveyed the impression that reefs were in excellent condition and subject to rare natural disturbances. Beginning in the 1970s, however, hurricanes, infectious diseases and coral bleaching fostered a non-equilibrial view of reef systems. Accelerating degradation in recent decades, driven primarily by human activities, has transformed our vision of coral-reef ecology from non-equilibrial to downright apocalyptic. We can predict the decadal- to centennial-scale future of reefs by placing their current state within the context of their Holocene history. Such a paleoecological ***ysis turns on two questions. First, can we detect the current state of degradation in the Holocene record of the reefs? And second, have these sorts of episodes occurred in the past? We have used a portable, diver-based technique to extract push-cores from reef frameworks in the Caribbean and the tropical eastern Pacific. Identification and radiocarbon dating of the constituents have enabled us to reconstruct the Holocene histories of the reef systems. In the lagoon of the Belizean barrier reef, Discovery Bay, Jamaica, and a coastal lagoon in Caribbean Panamá, the composition of coral assemblages was static for millennia until it changed radically in recent decades. (1) Why study den-cen? Reason is: improve understanding of climate system to aid in detection and prediction. You should read Ch. 8 (detection) of IPCC WGI SAR in this regard. (2) How to study den-cen? Models and observed data are equally important. Models (coupled O/AGCMs) can only give the internal component of variability, instrumental and paleodata give internal-plus-external. (3) How useful are paleodata? I support the continued collection of such data, but I am disturbed by how some people in the paleo community try to oversell their product. A specific example is the ice core isotope record, which correlates very poorly with temperature on the annual to decadal timescale (and possibly also on the century timescale)---question, how do we ever demonstrate the usefulness or otherwise of ice core isotopes on this timescale? There are other well known proxy data issues that need careful thought... (a) Sedimentary records---dating. Are 14C-dated records of any value at all (unless wiggle matched)? (b) Seasonal specificity---how useful is a proxy record that tells us about a single season (or only part of the year)? (c) Climate variance explained by the proxy variable--close to zero for ice core isotopes, up to 50% for tree rings, somewhere in between for most other indicators.   • Will La Nino or El Nino rule our Winter Weather? Cooling Down Maybe? This clip starts out slow but pay attention for some insights to the upcoming winter weather from some of PSU's finest. The "Pacific Decadal Oscillation" (PDO) is a long-lived El Niño-like pattern of Pacific climate variability. While the two climate oscillations have similar spatial climate fingerprints, they have very different behavior in time. Fisheries scientist Steven Hare coined the term "Pacific Decadal Oscillation" (PDO) in 1996 while researching connections between Alaska salmon production cycles and Pacific climate (his dissertation topic with advisor Robert Francis). Two main characteristics distinguish PDO from El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO): first, 20th century PDO "events" persisted for 20-to-30 years, while typical ENSO events persisted for 6 to 18 months; second, the climatic fingerprints of the PDO are most visible in the North Pacific/North American sector, while secondary signatures exist in the tropics - the opposite is true for ENSO. Several independent studies find evidence for just two full PDO cycles in the past century: "cool" PDO regimes prevailed from 1890-1924 and again from 1947-1976, while "warm" PDO regimes dominated from 1925-1946 and from 1977 through (at least) the mid-1990's. Shoshiro Minobe has shown that 20th century PDO fluctuations were most energetic in two general periodicities, one from 15-to-25 years, and the other from 50-to-70 years.

While the IPCC will continue to lead Earth System projections for global issues such as greenhouse gas levels and global temperature increase, high-resolution regional Earth System predictions will be crucial for producing effective decision-making tools for day- to-day, sustainable Earth System management and adaptive management of resources. Regional Earth System predictions and projections at the order of a few meters resolution from days to decades must be validated and provide uncertainties and skill scores to be usable. While the task is daunting, it would be criminally negligent of the global human not to embark on this task immediately.   • Jason Hyon - Understanding global climate change Thanks to the NASA Earth Decadal Survey, new passive and active optical sensors are being included in future NASA and NOAA missions to better understand of Earth system science and address the challenges of climate change. Understanding global climate change is important in addressing the challenges it will present in the near future, and hopefully preventing potential natural disasters. The NASA Earth Decadal Survey helped collect data about a variety of aspects of climate change, from ocean salinity and fresh water circulation in the oceans to ocean surface temperature to CO2 content in the atmosphere to vegetation and forest coverage of the Earth's surface. Now, Jason Hyon's team at Jet Propulsion Laboratory has made recommendations to NASA and NOAA for 16 new missions to further explore the ocean and Earth's atmosphere. Hyon discusses the data collected by the Decadal and other surveys, and how this information is being relayed and used by public organizations, and the need to work closely with industry to disseminate this information. Hyon also discusses what key technologies need to be further developed and addressed in order to fully understand global climate change. Jason Hyon is the chief technologist for JPL Earth Science and Technology Directorate. This video interview was conducted at SPIE's 2008 Optics and Photonics Symposium.

  • Decadal Ocean Variability - Temperature and Heat Flux Anomaly Evolution From a numerical study of decadal ocean variability using MITgcm: The movie shows an east-west section of potential temperature anomalies and associated air-sea heat flux anomalies through 60N in the northern hemisphere, "small" basin of MITgcm's "Double Drake", aquaplanet, configuation, in an experiment intended to probe the role of ocean circulation in decadal Atlantic variability. The movie shows temperature anomalies originating near the eastern boundary which strengthen as they propagate westward as thermal Rossby waves. Comparison of the location of air-sea heat flux anomalies compared with those of the temperature anomalies in the model ocean suggests that the temperature anomalies are damped by air-sea heat fluxes at all stages in their evolution...   • Ocean Surface Topography Mission The Ocean Surface Topography Mission (OSTM)/Jason-2 is an international satellite mission that will extend into the next decade the continuous climate record of sea surface height measurements begun in 1992 by the joint NASA/Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales (CNES) Topex/Poseidon mission and continued in 2001 by the NASA/CNES Jason-1 mission. This multi-decadal record has already helped scientists study global sea level rise and better understand how ocean circula-tion and climate change are related. Developed and proven through the joint efforts of NASA and CNES, high-precision ocean altimetry measures the distance between a satellite and the ocean surface to within a few centimeters. Accurate observations of variations in sea surface height—also known as ocean topography—provide scientists with information about the speed and direction of ocean currents and heat stored in the ocean. This information, in turn, reveals global climate variations. With OSTM/Jason-2, ocean altimetry has come of age. The mission will serve as a bridge to transition collection of these measurements to the world's weather and climate forecasting agencies, which will use them for short- and seasonal-to-long-range weather and climate forecasting. Sea level rise is one of the most important consequences and indicators of global climate change.
