DN! US Debtor Prisons on the Rise Report: Debtor Prisons on the Rise New reports by the ACLU and the Brennan Center for Justice have found a sharp rise in debtor prisons across the country. Poor defendants are being jailed for failing to pay legal debts. In Ohio, a man named Howard Webb, who earns $7 an hour as a dishwasher, has served two stints in jail totaling over 300 days for being unable to pay nearly $3000 in fines and costs from various criminal and traffic cases. In Michigan, a twenty-five-year-old single mother named Kawana Young has been jailed five times for being unable to afford to pay a few minor traffic tickets. Eric Balaban of the ACLU said, "Incarcerating people simply because they cannot afford to pay their legal debts is not only unconstitutional but also has a devastating impact upon men and women, whose only crime is that they are poor."

Debtors' Prison Returns in the US IN JAIL FOR BEING IN DEBT - You committed no crime, but an officer is knocking on your door. More Minnesotans are surprised to find themselves being locked up over debts. It's not a crime to owe money, and debtors' prisons were abolished in the United States in the 19th century. But people are routinely being thrown in jail for failing to pay debts. In Minnesota, which has some of the most creditor-friendly laws in the country, the use of arrest warrants against debtors has jumped 60 percent over the past four years, with 845 cases in 2009, a Star Tribune ***ysis of state court data has found. Not every warrant results in an arrest, but in Minnesota many debtors spend up to 48 hours in cells with criminals. Consumer attorneys say such arrests are increasing in many states, including Arkansas, Arizona and Washington, driven by a bad economy, high consumer debt and a growing industry that buys bad debts and employs every means available to collect. Whether a debtor is locked up depends largely on where the person lives, because enforcement is inconsistent from state to state, and even county to county. In Illinois and southwest Indiana, some judges jail debtors for missing court- ordered debt payments. In extreme cases, people stay in jail until they raise a minimum payment. In January, a judge sentenced a Kenney, Ill., man "to indefinite incarceration" until he came up with $300 toward a lumber yard debt. "The law enforcement system has unwittingly become a tool of the ...
A Debtor And Taxpayer Strike-Is it Coming? - Infinite Dangers, Inc. Thank you all for the many comments you made. I apologize as I didn't mean for it to run for more than a day or two. The purpose of the video was to measure the level of anger people felt with the government (thru BofA) and other banks now allowing some people to, essentially, live in their homes rent-free. Would it cause others - maybe millions? - to also stop their credit payments? I received my answer. Thank you. Thisis a problem that IMO was caused by liberals in congress circa 1998 headed by Barney Frank FORCING banks to violate their standards of lending has wrecked our economy, wrecked countless lives and cost taxpayers trillions of dollars. Yet they blame everyone but themselves. This is a catastrophy of the 1st order. Will we cast these politicians out in a few weeks who spend taxpayer money to buy votes? We'll see. Is there a small percentage of bankers who are also crooked or unethical using this to line their pockets? YES! But most who will lose their banks and their net worth it'd hard to say they are evil. Most are also victims. We now face an abyss as thousands of banks see their income drop to insolvency while Barney Frank and others will blame many who are now close to destitutue for simply following ORDERS (or. perhaps, be forced out of business. CONGRESS IS TO BLAME! Will the American people realize this and vote in fiscally conservative leaders? We'll soon find out. Comments? sure! write gyantis at

These court costs are higher in Rhode Island than other New England states, and a single offense can cost someone almost $1000. Many people have trouble paying these fines on schedule, and accumulate a significant amount of court debt. Unlike other forms of debt, which never result in jail-sentences, missing one payment date for court debt results in an additional $150 fee and several days or weeks in jail. Court debt is the most common reason people in RI are put in jail. It produces 17% of all jailings, and almost 2500 incidents a year. While some degree of punishment may be necessary for people that refuse to pay the court even if they can, many people are incarcerated far more than is necessary. They either legitimately cannot pay their debt or could have been induced to pay through cheaper methods. Many are homeless, unemployed, or receiving income assistance. Frequent incarcerations related to court debt make it even more difficult for these individuals to obtain jobs and establish a stable life in the community. Jailing people for ...

David Walker, Lackey of Billionaire Pete Peterson, Speaks Nostalgically About Debtor's Prison WALKER: You know, the fact of the matter is we have to change how we do things. We are on an imprudent and unsustainable path in a number of ways. You talk about debtors' prisons, we used to have debtors' prisons, now bankruptcy is no taint! Bankruptcy is an exit strategy! Our society and our culture has changed. We need to get back to the opportunity, we need to move away from entitlement, we need to provide reasonable risk but we need to hold people accountable when they do imprudent things. It's pretty fundamental.

Debtor Nation DEATH?!?!? The Coming Currency CRISIS! The World's Biggest Debtor Nations In today's struggling global markets, many national economies have looked to their government and foreign lenders for financial support, which translates to increased spending, borrowing and in most cases, growing national debt. Deficit spending, government debt and private sector borrowing are the norm in most western countries, but due in part to the global financial crisis, some nations and economies are in considerably worse debt positions than others. External debt is a measure of a nation's foreign liabilities, capital plus interest that a country must eventually pay. This number not only includes government debt, but also debt owed by the private sector and individuals. So, how does the US debt position compare to that of other countries? A useful measure of a country's debt position is by comparing gross external debt to GDP, which offers a direct relation of a country's total debt to the size of its economy. In this report, all countries are among the world's 50 largest economies, and are ranked by current external debt as a percentage of 2008 GDP. Who are the world's biggest debtor nations? The rankings may surprise you!
