Damping-off - a short on a type of plant disease Damping-off is a movie short on the widespread but mostly unnoticed disease of plants. I say unnoticed because the plants appear to wilt away and most would conclude the cause was limitation of plant available moisture. The movie short exposes the secretive predation of plants, especially seedlings, by several types of pathogenic microbes commonly lurking in the soil. All content is of native plants and plant communities. Our heroine, black cherry, is one of the most valuable timber species in the USA and is the source of cherry wood used in fine woodworking. Many other plant species are affected by Pythium, however, the movie focuses on black cherry because it was the focus of Kurt's research for several years. A few fellow KLR owners and I were in search of the rear damping adjustment and it is now found. I am posting this in case anyone out there is in search of it. The owners manual does a poor job of explaining the location of this. I guess if you weigh more than the average rider you should adjust this. I have mine on 3 and will test it out.

Reducing number and strength of hurricanes impacting coastal regions through wind powered pumps distributing cold deep sea water on the ocean surface. The project aims to control formation and strength of cyclones by cooling the sea surface with 6 °C cold water from depths, less than 1000m, pumped up by floating, mobile and steerable offshore platforms with tubes, reaching down to the required depth and importantly, using the same platforms also to produce clean, renewable energy. In future, some of the fleets would evolve into sea based, floating cities, using some of the locally produced energy, living on aqua culturing and fish farming. Properly built, the growing islands could enhance cyclone control and strengthen the albedo effect to reduce global warming. Another Mathews Innovation: Harmonic Damping In 2000, Mathews introduced Harmonic Dampening, a pair of weights that float in elastic bushings on either side of the riser. Harmonic Dampening helps two ways: 1. Cancels vibration when recoil vibration encounters the dampers, they become weight-in-motion that is out of phase with the vibration. The result is a canceling or absorption of the vibration. 2. Reducing torque- locating the dampers (weights on either end of the riser) effectively reduces hand torque through what is called the barbell effect.

Motion Damping With Air Dashpots The different response characteristics when pulling vs. pushing on the dashpot piston. A dashpot piston includes a low friction graphite piston, a glass cylinder, a metal mount that houses a valve on one end and a rod attached to piston on the other end. The rod is attached to a 400-gram weight falling by gravity inside the demonstrator. In push damping the piston will compress air and build up enough pressure in order to resist the weight. In pull damping, you are creating a partial vacuum. The advantage is that the pressure differential builds much quicker and the user gets damping right at the start of the stroke.
EDWARD - Electric Diwheel With Active Rotation Damping This project by students in the School of Mechanical Engineering, the University of Adelaide involved the construction of a human operated diwheel called EDWARD. Many diwheels in the past have been human powered or powered by IC engines. This one is purely electric. It has additional functionality lacking in other models, including inbuilt dynamic lateral stability and slosh control to prevent "gerbiling" or tumbling in aggressive braking or acceleration maneuvers. The diwheel also incorporates a unique feature that allows the rider to drive the vehicle when "upside down" - keeping the vehicle in its unstable state. This video shows the outcomes from the developments during 2010, which includes successful slosh control, swing-up and inversion control.
