We towed at a maximum of 15 mph due to the limitations of the power boat. The boat seemed to lift nicely when Jeff sat forward, and of course the bows climbed when he sat back. Let me know your thoughts.

Part 35-4 Final Build Out.wmv Shaping the Tiller, and assembly of the Daggerboard from plywood strips to a NACA 0010 X-section

My homemade sailboat The boat itself is loosely based on a drawing I saw for a "two-sheet boat" and was originally made from two 4'x8' sheets of 1/4" plywood, and about 9 1"x2"x8's. By time I put a deck on it and daggerboard and rudder, I probably used another 2 sheets or so of ply and a few more 1'x2's. What you see in the video is the third and forth version of the rig. The first time I just used a blue tarp cut in a triangle and some half inch electrical conduit for a mast at the front of the boat. Also at the time I was using a leeboard. Half inch conduit proved not to be strong enough, but I could tell it might be possible to sail. I replaced that mast with one made from 2"x2"s, 8' lengths screwed together. I had a forestay and a backstay connected at the top but it turns out the wood would bend so much it would just bend in half in the middle with a good gust of wind. But it did work better, so I went all out after that. I made the deck in the front, mounted the mast in the right place to have two sails, put in the daggerboard, put on the bowsprit, I built a new mast, and put on all the right stays in the right places (except for the backstay, which is why it failed). The mast was made by scarfing together 8' lengths of 1"x3"s, then laminating 3 layers of this to end up with a 3"x3" post, then I eight-sided it with a circular saw and did the final rounding with a combination of hand plane and sander. The final length was about 19'. I couldn't use a backstay because of the size of the ...

wave deflector for hobie adventure island The Hobie AI is not designed to catch waves. It has a flat hull which makes nose dives very easy to do. 2 ft waves are the top end of the size of waves they can catch. Even with a deflector the yak can twist sideways and white water can flood over the side of the boat washing you overboard. The crossbar stress pin can break collapsing one ama into the side of the hull which results in a capsize........in the surf. Catch only tiny waves in semi-sheltered bays over flat extensive sand bars. Oh yes....pull the daggerboard COMPLETELY out of the water before catching the smallest of waves. If you a stupid enough to try catching small waves ...do it where there are no surfers in the water because if you lose control of the boat.....it could get ugly.

200 Year Old Dagger-Board Schooner Discovered in Lake Ontario A rare dagger-board schooner has been discovered in very deep water off the southern shore of Lake Ontario using deep towed side scan sonar equipment. Sailing vessels of this type were in use on the lakes for only a short period of time beginning in the very early 1800s. This ship is the only dagger-board schooner known to have been found in the Great Lakes.

Power kite kayak sailing fast in Goa Third prototype of my invention since I had the idea for this heeling free kite boat rig 2 1/2 years ago. Have been working on this and financing it all alone so far, but hoping to find some investor/partner, water sports company or private individual, to get through the remaining patent procedure(Patent Pending(WO2011095178 (A1)) and bring this thing to market. Any serious proposals welcome! For kayaks and dinghys it's virtually market ready. Once satisfactory starting and landing systems for bigger kites are developed I am convinced this will be the system of choice for yachts as well, without the need for ballast keel, dagger board or compromises on the hull shape and folding away on it's own when sailing downwind or not in use. Please support my project by spreading this clip!

Early Windsurfing Movie "High Wind" - 1976 Movie shot on San Francisco Bay to show the capabilities of the Windsurfer sailboard in 1976. Shot on 16mm film by photographer Bob Williams. Bob was on call for the Environmental Protection Agency. His day job was to fly to big chemical spills and document the damage. A rather unsafe job. While waiting for the next hazmat disaster he noticed Bay Windsurfing's classes being taught a few dozen feet from his apartment and he decided he wanted to trade photographic skills for a Windsurfer®. Bob did the aerial shots from a rented Fisherman's Wharf tourist helicopter by leaning out of the cabin and placing one foot on a skid. The guy was brave as heck. For the water level shots he used the 16mm camera and plexi case that was used in this video: The windsurfing harness was not invented until two years later and anyway, real men don't need no stinkin' sailing harness. And to really harden your biceps you can't beat teak booms and really full Dacron sails in 20kt. winds. The original Windsurfer had a daggerboard which gave the board good upwind ability but gave trouble when going fast off the wind as the side pressure on the DB would tend to roll it up until it planed on the surface of the water. At speed it was wise to pull the DB out and hang it on your arm. When the current was ebbing we would often leave our daggerboards ashore as the current would take us upwind on a summer day with normal wind direction. This technique has been the major factor that has ...

Day 1, TX 200 This is from the Texas 200 sailing event which is sailed from the southern tip of Texas, Port Isabel to the small coastal town of Seadrift 200 miles up the coast. We camped 5 nights along the Laguna Madre on small sandbarsand up in remote bayous. In the video we mention the seagrass getting stuck on the rudder and daggerboard. This seagrass clumps could kick up the rudder or get stuck on the daggerboard and make the rudder vibrate. On the first 2 days of the event this happened a few times.

In the more than 150 years since that first race off England, only four nations have won what is often called the "oldest trophy in international sport." For some perspective, consider that there had been nine contests for the America's Cup before the first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens in 1896.
