  • The ABC's of DADA (1 of 3) The Dada movement was a protest against the barbarism of World War I, the bourgeois interests that Dada adherents believed inspired the war, and what they believed was an oppressive intellectual rigidity in both art and everyday society. Dada was an international movement, and it is difficult to classify artists as being from any one particular country, as they were constantly moving from one place to another. Dada thought that reason and logic had led people into the horrors of war, so the only route to salvation was to reject logic and embrace anarchy and irrationality. However, this could also be thought of as the logical side of anarchy and rejection of values and order; it is not irrational to embrace the systematic destruction of values, if one thinks them to be flawed. According to its proponents, Dada was not art - it was "anti-art". It was anti-art in the sense that Dadaists protested against the contemporary academic and cultured values of art. For everything that art stood for, Dada was to represent the opposite. Where art was concerned with aesthetics, Dada ignored aesthetics. If art were to have at least an implicit or latent message, Dada strove to have no meaning - interpretation of Dada is dependent entirely on the viewer. If art is to appeal to sensibilities, Dada is to offend. Ironically, Dada became an influential movement in modern art, a commentary on order and the carnage Dadaists believed it wreaked. Through their rejection of traditional culture ...

  • Journal of a Dadaist Interdisciplinary Spoken Word Performance by Andrew Dudich Full Text: I met Ernst in the mountains today debating with the anti-hegemon about whether Franz Ferdinand was really from Scotland or Austria. Either way, Europe was ablaze and the heat made me hungry. Antiquated colanders were suspended from the sky which created rain from the drainage of green bean cookeries in the firmament and hunger consumed me. Once I had digested myself, I could not decide if I were Romanian or simply a hobby-horse; I therefore dismissed it completely and instead inspected the empty leash. It had once belonged to r mutt, but he had evidently gone to bathe in the fountain where he played chess in a readymade inner tube. Anticipating a loss, he formulated a collage of the board and rearranged it in such a way that the pawns created a model of the Berlin Wall across the squares. Watches were stopped in Zurich and set to 4 squared past 19. A little yes and a big no came from the crowd where George and Heartfield scuffled over whether a hand had five fingers. Arp pointed out it was only half of the problem as it is really the other hand you should worry about. It was the first thing able to be agreed upon, and so they all went to New York where oxen were rarely on roofs, and the 6 played the piano while the rest raised their glasses to toast the new era of the anti-era. The bartender asked the crowd to pipe down, but an onlooker named René convinced the barkeep that in fact it was not a pipe ...

  • DADAISM IS: Johnny Angel, Emad, George, & Paulie G! The 5th and final project of COMS 358. I guess the challenge with this one was to see whether or not I would actually survive to witness its showing in class due to extreme illness, and almost wishing that I wouldn't be alive to see it because of the unruly group that we were with miscommunications up the wazoo. All the content was shot at Woodfield Mall by Emad Shishani pulling off a "hidden camera" type approach. Our group was assigned an art idiom to research and present with a PowerPoint (which I organized) and then afterward, we showed this. The presentation may have been shoddy, but this video was easily the best, despite criticism from one of the TAs calling its content redundant. Since I was uber sick, I couldn't make it to the video portion of this, and was fortunate that Emad edited it (masterfully, I might add) ... I barely survived that semester, but damnit, we walked away with A's. Except Paul, slacker. Since Emad did all the work, I wound up making my contribution by adding some strange bootleg NIN remixes because they fit the style perfectly.
