  • Copper Crystallization (Time Lapse) Watch in HQ to see more detail in the formation of the solid. NOTE: I'm no chemist, so I can't describe the process here in scientific terms, or even know for sure that these are truly copper crystals. I'm just assuming that this is copper crystallization as it is the formation of solid copper on a nail from a copper solution. To achieve this reaction, I first cleaned around 40-50 (very highly oxidized) pennies in a salt/vinegar solution, stirring vigorously for about 10-15 minutes, until the solution became so highly saturated with copper oxide that it turned a greenish blue. I put a nail in the solution, set up my camera to record a time lapse for two hours, and saw this as the result. No, this isn't copper plating. When I removed the nail from the solution, all the solids formed on it fell off almost instantly, leaving almost no copper on the nail. If you're knowledgeable about chemistry and could describe to me exactly what it is that I've done here, I'd be really grateful. To help with any investigation, I suppose I should say the nail was galvanized, so you need to factor in zinc when figuring out the reaction here.
  • Crystallization of Sodium Acetate (Hot Ice) Crystallization of my homemade sodium acetate solution. I shined a laser at it before and after triggering it with a seed crystal to demonstrate the change in the way it scatters light. This experiment took several tries as it kept on beginning the reaction while the solution was cooling, and I'm glad I finally got it. Note to anyone who is thinking of trying this at home: it is vitally important that you remove ALL impurities from the solution to stop the formation of nucleation centers. Add granulated filter carbon to the solution, then remove it by running it through a coffee filter. If you can't do this, at least run it through a coffee filter; this removes most of the dirt and dust that may have accumulated in it during preparation. Or just buy the sodium acetate pre-prepared--then you won't have to worry about it.

Despite many researchers being skeptical that nanoliter volumes would yield diffraction quality crystals, we have routinely utilized these technologies in PSI-1 to screen crystallization conditions and generate diffraction-quality crystals. A combination of fully automated crystallization and imaging robotics have been a key part of our pipeline since its inception and have greatly contributed to our ability to process large numbers of targets.
