Councilman asks police to lock up process server as members receive $30 million lawsuit By Dan McDermott Warren County Report FRONT ROYAL, Va. — July 19, 2010 — Three members of Front Royal Town Council and the Town Attorney were served with legal documents at a Town Hall work session tonight, protesting the whole while. "Lock em up," said newly installed Councilman Hollis Tharpe as process server John Arena went about his business with Town Police Lt. Clint Keller racing up from behind. Earlier today, Warren County Report exclusively reported that the complaints in a $30 million lawsuit charging the town and three councilmen with defamation and hurting a business would be served after the work session, held most Mondays in between the more formal twice-monthly council meetings. The council had just voted to go into a closed session to discuss their lawsuit with the town attorney (an item conspicuously absent from the agenda) and it appeared to some that one meeting had ended but another had not yet begun as spectators, staff and reporters began packing their items up to leave. At this point, process server Arena, 6'8" tall and armed with size 18 feet and four 154-page copies of a lawsuit that could cost Front Royal taxpayers millions, casually sprung into action. Arena first placed a folder in front of Town Attorney Thomas R. Robinett and walked away. Looking surprised, Robinett said "Sir, you are going to interrupt a public meeting?" Arena said nothing and proceeded around the table toward his next target, Councilman Chris W. Holloway. Holloway sat and ...

The officers referred to parade goers as Voodoo worshipers, "Darkies" and Dog's that Mayor Bloomberg must appease to win their "voodoo vote" to name a few. Councilman says NYPD racist NEW YORK (PIX11)—After getting taken down, handcuffed and kept in police custody for no apparent reason during the West Indian Day Parade on Monday, the city councilmember and high-level city government aide it happened to are speaking out, and the police commissioner has opened an investigation. Democratic Councilmember Jumaane Williams and Kirsten John Foy, the community affairs director for the City Public Advocate, both 35 and African-American, say that their treatment indicates that many people like them are treated the same or worse by police. "If I did not look the way I look, a black man with dreadlocks and earrings, with another young black male... if we were elected officials of a different persuasion, we are sure things would have been handled differently," Williams said at a news conference on the steps of City Hall. He was joined by Foy and about two dozen other officials at the city and state level, as well as Brooklyn congresswoman Yvette Clarke. The officials each spoke of shock and outrage over the two men being detained at a checkpoint inside a so-called frozen zone -- an area closed off to anyone except people specifically cleared to be there. In this case, the only people allowed in the zone were dignitaries invited to a West Indian Parade event at the Brooklyn Museum. Williams and Foy were invited. "I am continuing to try and see police as community partners," Williams said. "It becomes increasingly difficult to do that when you have situations like ...

World to Barron: Anti-Semitism Exists! - Councilman Fidler Argues Against Durban III Conference In April, NYC Councilman Lew Fidler introduced a Resolution calling upon NYC to provide no "welcoming accomodation" for the UN's celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Durban conference. Many governments, including ours, walked out of Durban, calling it a "hatefest" after swastikas and pictures of Hitler were displayed and copies of the notoriously anti-Semitic "Protocols of the Elders of Zion" were distributed. Barron took to the floor to attack Fidler and the resolution. After Barron walked out, knowing that Fidler would shortly respond, Fidler got to his feet to speak. When he was done, additional Council members signed on to the resolution, making for a total of 41 out of 51 members.

NYC Councilman Robert Jackson (Education Chair) COMMUNITIES IN SUPPORT OF KHALIL GIBRAN INTERNATIONAL ACADEMY Contact: Erica Phone: 718-431-4465 For Immediate Release Email: kgiasupport@ ELECTED OFFICIALS CALLED FOR PRINCIPAL ALMONTASER'S REINSTATEMENT Community members and parents vow not to be silent Thursday, September 20, 2007 By the steps of the New York City Department of Education's Tweed Courthouse yesterday, several New York City elected officials, parents and community members called for the reinstatement of Debbie Almontaser as principal of the Khalil Gibran International Academy, a new Brooklyn-based public school where students learn Arabic along with the content that is integral to every New York City public school. Almontaser was forced to resign after a six-month anti-Arab and anti-Muslim campaign against her and the school. Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz recalled the many years he has known her as "a force of openness and cross cultural conversation" and stressed that "the Khalil Gibran International Academy, as we all know, was Debbie's vision." He called the attacks and insinuations against her "disgraceful, xenophobic, and racist." And Rabbi Michael Paley reminded us, "If Debbie Almontaser is painted in that way, then no one is safe." Speaking as Chair of the City Council's Education Committee, Robert Jackson (D-Manhattan) was emphatic: "What happened to her is wrong. What's happening to the school is wrong. And we're standing up and saying that we must correct that injustice ...

The purpose of his visit was to galvanize and unify efforts to fight the mayor's proposed child care cuts that threaten to reduce Bais Yaakov's existing 8 classes to 4 classes. Councilman Lander visited classrooms of the day care center. The children prepared songs and jingles to greet the Councilman and to ask him to help saving their center. They prepared arts and craft keys that would "enable" the Councilman to save the program. Councilman Lander explained the children that he will go to Mayor Bloomberg with their message and will fight for the program. Over 50 parents came to the question and answer session that took place in Beth Yaakov's library. Councilman Lander explained the process of how the City's budget is enacted and that he is committed to fight against the disproportional cuts that Bais Yaakov Day Care and the Orthodox Jewish community faces, saying "Upon visiting the Day Care classes I realize over and over the vital service to both the parents and children that this program provides and the injustice to the community by eliminating the already reduced child care slots" stated Councilman Lander upon taking leave.

Councilman Tommy Wells' Unethical Behavior on Dais Here's a shameful case of minorities business owners along the H St corridor being deceived and disregarded by their city councilman --Tommy Wells. He told these business owners that they don't deserve construction relief since other businesses like Granville Moore's and Argonaut have been extremely success on H St NE without government relief during the four year long debilitating streetcar/streetscape construction on H St., NE. A year later, these businesses owners uncovered, via FOIA'd documents, that Councilman Wells earmarked almost $500K in taxpayers' subsidies in 2008, 2009 and 2010 to benefit the exact businesses he stated on the dais didn't received any government assistance during the construction and were doing so well without relief. Wells also didn't disclosed that the owner of these businesses was one of the administrators for his earmark. This business owner is also one of the founders of H Street Cooperative, which received Councilman Wells' earmark four months after incorporating as a non-profit. A year later, this non-profit subterfuge was "Not in Good Standing" with the DC government. Councilman Wells--the author of DC's new ethics bill for the Council-- has some serious explaining to do regarding his unethical behavior towards DC constituents and stakeholders!

Cutie Meets Her Councilman When she's not reviewing films and restaurants, smooching her husband of seven decades or spoiling her grandchildren, Cutie moonlights as a library advocate. And these days, LA's libraries need all the friends they can get, since the Mayor's 2010 budget left the LAPL system so poorly funded, hundreds were fired and Sunday and Monday branch hours eliminated. But one Councilman who voted against these devastating cuts was CD14 representative José Huizar, who happens to represent Cutie's neighborhood of Boyle Heights. On August 5, 2010, the famous blogging grandma and her Councilman sat down with David Kipen -- former head of literature at the National Endowment for the Arts and proprietor of Boyle Heights' newest independent lending library and bookshop, Libros Schmibros -- to talk about their shared passion for books, the importance of libraries for raising healthy kids, and what folks can do to help keep their local libraries alive. Cutie says: "You can tell Mayor Villaraigosa and your local Councilmember that you support LAPL when you visit !"
