  • Copepod Larvae Hatching By Matt Wittenrich This is a really unusual harpacticoid copepod collected in plankton tow off Melbourne, Florida. • Copepod model This is an animation of one run of our model, with colors representing the number of Cal*** (a type of copepod). The blue colors at the beginning indicate that there are relatively few Cal*** at the beginning of the year. As the waters warm up and the amount of chlorophyll increases, Cal*** becomes more abundant (green and yellows). Eventually, by the end of the simulation (about June 1), there are regions of orange and red that indicate lots of Cal***. You'll also notice that the image seems to wiggle—these are the twice-daily tides pushing the copepods around. Produced by Andy Pershing, Gulf Of Maine Research Institute.

  • SW Rebuild - Part 15 - Refugium and Copepods So I meant to do a video of putting together the regium, but it smehow got away from me. Basically I grabbed a small rubbermaid container, filled it with 2 inches of the Fiji Pink live sand, threw in some cheato, and some live rubble. I then placed the container inside the refugium area of the sump and put the remaining liv sand outside the bin. A couple days later, I added a bottle of a couple thousand live copepods. The thought is, they will have a safe place to breed and a few will slip into the main tank and maybe populate the live rock. I also plan on adding a couple hermit crabs and some cleaner clams to the refugium when one of my local fish stores get some in stock.

  • Copepod Nauplius Larva.wmv The challenge of this video was to keep the larva immobile for a long period (I mean for seconds, of course). Plus there was too much water in the sample. The larva was in drops of pond water on a depression slide.

  • Free fish food! ( Copepods - tiny crustaceans in the aquarium) Here's a shot of some Copepods on the surface of the water in my aquarium, they're nearly everywhere in most sal***er aquariums with live rock, but always hard to see because of there near microscopic size. My Mandarin Dragonet fish eats these tiny crustaceans exclusively and does not eat any other foods. Most Dragonets are like this, so they usually require a larger tank because in smaller aquariums the copepod population cannot be sustained and the Mandarin eventually eats them faster than they can reproduce and the fish ends up starving to death. If your lucky you can find or train one that can accept other foods such as flake, pellets, mysis shrimp....I trained a Dragonet years ago and eventually got him to accept other foods, but it did take nearly 2 weeks to do.
