Blocked NATO-US convoy burns in Pakistan as Musharraf launches new political party (composite video - Musharraf @6.15+) Gunmen in southern Pakistan have set ablaze more than two dozen trucks carrying NATO supplies to Afghanistan, less than a day after Pakistan blocked a vital transport route following the deaths of three soldiers in an alleged NATO air strike..... Attacks on trucks carrying goods for US and NATO-led forces are routine. But Friday's incident came a day after Pakistan blocked the convoys following the deaths of three Pakistani soldiers blamed on cross-border NATO fire. "Around 20 attackers armed with rocket launchers and assault rifles attacked these trucks. They set ablaze 27 trucks parked there," district police chief Abdul Hameed Khoso told AFP of the pre-dawn attack. The incident took place in Shikarpur district of the southern province of Sindh and was confirmed by another top administrative official. Officials said the main land route for NATO supplies remained blocked and no trucks were being allowed to enter Afghanistan for the second consecutive day Friday. "Trucks carrying fuel and other goods for NATO are still not allowed to enter Afghanistan," an administrative official at Torkham, the main border crossing in Pakistan's Khyber district, told AFP by telephone. A security official in the northwestern city of Peshawar also confirmed that convoys were suspended for second day and that they had not received fresh orders to restore the supplies for NATO. NATO said aircraft had entered Pakistani airspace Thursday in self-defence and ...

CAST Makes Autonomous Convoys a Reality CAST (Convoy Active Safety Technology) autonomously controls convoy vehicles to significantly reduce crew fatigue, eliminate rear-end collisions, enhance operator situational awareness and enable a more effective response to attack. The low-cost, kit-based system can be installed on a variety of transport vehicles, and drivers can switch over to autonomous mode at the touch of a button. The Lockheed Martin CAST system is a development program for the US Army Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center and has already logged more than 12000 miles of autonomous operation.

Transcontinental Motor Convoy In the summer of 2009, on the 100th anniversary of the original trek, the Military Vehicle Preservation Association is sponsoring a re-enactment of the 1909 and 1919 convoys. Beginning June 10, following the original route as much as possible and duplicating the original schedule, the convoy will set out from Washington DC Over the length of the convoy includes more than 150 historic military vehicles, including 50 military jeeps, 19 3/4 ton trucks, seven 1 1/2 ton trucks, six 2 1/2 ton trucks, three cargo trucks, nine motorcycles, and four sedans will take part. The oldest vehicle scheduled to take part is a 1917 four-wheel drive 3 ton ammunition truck. Not all of the historical vehicles will be driven to the starting point or from the end point to their home destination, as the Association is planning on using transport companies to move vehicles from place to place. The reenactors have three purposes: along with retracing the route of 1919 convoy over the historic Lincoln Highway, they plan to pay tribute to the US military and to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of President Abraham Lincoln.

Refugee Convoy Bombing Near Djakovica April 14, 1999 "The NATO bombing of Albanian refugees near Djakovica (Giakove) occurred on April 14, 1999 when NATO planes repeatedly bombed refugee movements over a twelve-mile stretch of road between Djakovica and Decani in western Kosovo, killing 73 civilians. Human Rights Watch found no basis to support the claims by NATO that the convoys themselves were composed of military vehicles. The attack began at 1:30 pm and persisted for about two hours, causing civilian deaths in numerous locations on the convoy route near the villages of Bistrazin, Gradis, Madanaj, and Meja. ..." Gunmen attack Afghan-bound Nato convoy in Pakistan Islamabad - At least seven people have been killed and six injured after a Nato convoy was attacked just outside Pakistan's capital, Islamabad. Up to 12 fighters fired machine guns and threw grenades before torching more than 50 lorries carrying military vehicles for Nato forces in Afghanistan late on Tuesday, Kalim Imam, a police officer, said. The raid occurred in Tarnol, about 10km from Islamabad, on the main road leading to the border with Afghanistan. It was the first so close to Pakistan's well-protected capital. Imam said seven people were killed and seven wounded, but their identities were not yet known. He said police were not aware that the rest stop was used by vehicles carrying supplies for Nato and US forces in Afghanistan. "The attack took place around 11.35pm [1835 GMT] and we are still trying to find out how this attack has happened," Shah Nawaz, head of Tarnol police station, said. Much of the supplies and fuel for the US-led force in landlocked Afghanistan are transported in lorries through Pakistan after arriving on ships docked at the Arabian Sea port of Karachi. Thousands of lorries make the journey across the border each week, making it a lucrative business for lorry drivers, but angering Pakistanis opposed to foreign involvement in Afghanistan. Imtiaz Gul, a security ***yst in Pakistan, told AFP news agency it was probably carried out by Pakistani Taliban fighters who have made a habit of targeting Nato convoys. "Until a few months ...

American Supply Convoys Attacked in Pakistan by Pakistanis for Profit This is what happens when you bribe people for safe passage, they attack you like pirates to extort money out of you because it worked the first 25 times. For months, reports have abounded here that the Afghan mercenaries who escort American and other NATO convoys through the badlands have been bribing Taliban insurgents to let them pass. Then came a series of events last month that suggested all-out collusion with the insurgents. After a pair of bloody confrontations with Afghan civilians, two of the biggest private security companies — Watan Risk Management and Compass Security — were banned from escorting NATO convoys on the highway between Kabul and Kandahar. The ban took effect on May 14. At 10:30 am that day, a NATO supply convoy rolling through the area came under attack. An Afghan driver and a soldier were killed, and a truck was overturned and burned. Within two weeks, with more than 1000 trucks sitting stalled on the highway, the Afghan government granted Watan and Compass permission to resume. Watan's president, Rashid Popal, strongly denied any suggestion that his men either colluded with insurgents or orchestrated attacks to emphasize the need for their services. Executives with Compass Security did not respond to questions. But the episode, and others like it, has raised the suspicions of investigators here and in Washington, who are trying to track the tens of millions in taxpayer dollars paid to private security companies to move supplies to American and ...
Attack & Destruction of Convoy PQ 17 / Pt 01-03 PQ17 was the code name for an Allied World War II convoy in the Arctic Ocean. In July 1942, the Arctic convoys suffered a significant defeat when Convoy PQ17 lost twenty-one of its thirty-four merchant ships during a series of heavy enemy daylight attacks which lasted a week. On 27 June 1942 the ships sailed eastbound from Hvalfjord, Iceland for the port of Arkhangelsk in Russia. The convoy was located by German forces on 1 July, after which it was shadowed continuously and attacked. The convoy's progress was being observed by the British Admiralty, which ordered the ships to scatter because of information German navy surface units were being refuelled to intercept the convoy. The convoy was the first joint Anglo-American naval operation under British command in the war. As the close escort and the covering cruiser forces withdrew westward to intercept the presumed German raiders, the individual merchant ships were left without their escorting destroyers. In their ensuing attempts to reach the appointed Russian ports, the merchant ships were repeatedly attacked by German air units and submarines. Of the initial thirty-four ships, only eleven reached their destination, delivering 70000 tons of cargo. The disastrous outcome of the convoy demonstrated the difficulty of passing adequate supplies through the Arctic, especially during the summer period of perpetual daylight. The first convoy sailed from the United Kingdom in August 1941, two months after the German invasion of ...

Nato's vulnerable convoys Zafar Jaspal, a security ***yst in Pakistan, spoke to Al Jazeera in the wake of a deadly attack on a Nato convoy near Islamabad that was transporting supplies across the border into Afghanistan. At least six drivers were killed in the raid of June 8, with a group of men armed with guns and grenades striking in the middle of night and torching more than 50 lorries, in the process destroying millions of dollars worth of fuel, food and other supplies. Attacks on Nato convoys are not unusual in Pakistan, but what has got security forces worried this time is that the attack took place on the outskirts of the federal capital. (9 June 2010)
