Male Contraceptive injection tested in Sydney Australia Men in Sydney, Australia will be among the first in the world to try a new contraceptive giving them control over their own fertility. ANZAC Research Institute at Concord Hospital has begun testing a new twice-monthly male contraceptive injection. It works exactly like the female contraceptive pill by shutting down the reproductive function. The contraceptive tricks the brain into thinking it has already produced sperm and does not affect men's ***uality. Earlier studies have found the injection works in 95 percent of men and allows users to become fully fertile within three month of stopping the injections. Sydney is one of 10 centers, including Melbourne's Prince Henry Institute, to take part in the worldwide trial. Lead researcher Rob McLachlan said the treatment kept men's testosterone levels normal while the hormone progestin fooled the brain into not producing hormones needed to stimulate sperm production.

New Warning on Depo-Provera Contraceptive Injection (Feb 05) The FDA recently announced that a new black-box warning is being added to the labeling for Depo-Provera Contraceptive Injection. The warning alerts prescribers that prolonged use may result in loss of bone density. Pfizer, the drug's manufacturer, has also issued a Dear Doctor letter with the same information, and the new information also appears in the patient information sheet. The loss of bone density increases the longer the woman is on the drug and so the black box warning says that Depo Provera shouldn't be used as a long-term birth control method (for example, longer than two years) unless other methods aren't adequate. This bone density loss may not be completely reversible after discontinuation of the drug. This bone density loss may not be completely reversible after discontinuing the drug. The "warnings" section of the label says that women with osteoporosis risk factors (eg, metabolic bone disease, chronic alcohol or tobacco use, anorexia nervosa, a strong family history of osteoporosis, or chronic use of drugs that can reduce bone mass, such as anticonvulsants or corticosteroids) should consider other birth control methods. Another high risk group is adolescent women. The label warns that it's not known whether Depo-Provera might reduce their peak bone mass and increase the risk of osteoporotic fractures later in life. Additional Information: FDA MedWatch 2004 Safety Alert - Depo-Provera (medroxyprogesterone acetate injectable suspension). www.fda.gov

Contraception Museum LeBron may be gone and the Cuyahoga River no longer catches on fire but Cleveland still has Dennis Kucinich, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and something that even most Clevelanders will find surprising, America's only contraception museum. Tucked away in the halls of the Dittrick Medical Center, right across the street from the home of the renowned Cleveland Orchestra, is a collection of beaver testicles, cat bones, crocodile dung, ear wax from a mule, spider and deer skin, Mexican yams, formaldehyde powder, Goodyear Tire rubbers, rhythm beads, seed wool, dates, honey, sponges, diaphragms, loops, pills and IUDs all displayed in a chronological tribute to the history of women's attempts to control their fertility for over a thousand years. Not all of the over 700 methods on display were effective. Cat bones, amulets and magic clearly weren't but "some of this stuff actually worked," said Meyer, pointing to the cabinets chock full of examples of early contraceptives. Even those that seem ridiculous today, such as the acacia infused Egyptian cotton seed tampon could have controlled fertility. Seeing the displays, it's impossible not to think about the countless women who have stories that they've buried throughout their lives. *** has always been the perfect complement to Rock 'n' Roll so after a trip to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame take a tour of the Contraception Exhibit, "Virtue, Vice, and Contraband: A History of Contraception in America." Nonoxynol 9 Contraceptives: No Protection against HIV and Other STDs The Food and Drug Administration wants to be sure that consumers know about new warnings on over-the-counter vaginal contraceptive products that contain the spermicide ingredient nonoxynol 9 (N9). These products include spermicidal gels, foams, films and inserts. These warnings emphasize that nonoxynol 9 does not protect against infection from HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, or other ***ually transmitted diseases. The warnings are intended to correct a mistaken impression that nonoxynol 9 protects against STD infection, including HIV/AIDS. In fact, using it may actually increase the risk of contracting HIV/AIDS from an infected partner, because nonoxynol 9 can irritate the vagina and rectum. The new labeling makes several other points: • Nonoxynol 9 contraceptive products are for vaginal use only, not rectal use. If you or your partner experience burning, itching, a rash or irritation of the vagina or penis, stop using it and talk to your doctor. • You can use nonoxynol 9 for birth control if you are not at risk for getting HIV/AIDS ie, you have *** with only one partner who is not infected with HIV and who has no other ***ual partners or HIV risk factors. • Don't use nonoxynol 9 spermicides if you or your partner have HIV/AIDS, or if you don't know whether you or your partner are infected, or if either of you has multiple *** partners or other HIV risk factors. Instead, use a condom that doesn't contain nonoxynol 9. Remember, when used correctly every time you have *** ...
