The Human at the Heart of our Work: Advancing Social Theory and Engineering Practice Google Tech Talk January 10, 2011 Presented by Justine Cassell. ABSTRACT How do we build an interdisciplinary HCI that contributes equally to social theory and engineering practice? On the one hand, how do we maximize the benefits that theory can bring to the design of actual artifacts that improve health, well-being, education, and social change? On the other hand, how do we maximize the use of technological artifacts in pushing the boundaries of social theory? In sum, how do we understand human behavior with, through, and in response to new technologies, and how do we design new technologies shaped by this understanding? In this talk, I use examples from my recent research and that of the other faculty at Carnegie Mellon's Human-Computer Interaction Institute to illustrate dimensions of these questions. By referencing a range of work that depends intrinsically on both social theory and engineering practice, I point to ways that HCI can contribute to both. This work reflects my perspective on the power and promise of HCI research to make significant contributions to social theory and to engineering practice, and the power and promise of a partnership between social theory and engineering practice to keep the human always at the heart of our work. Bio: Justine Cassell joined Carnegie Mellon University in August as director of the Human-Computer Interaction Institute in the School of Computer Science. LeSands - Easy To Please Hailing from the perpetual summer on steroids of San Diego, 80's synth pop band LESANDS connotates a dreamy summer haze with their warm and darling EP "Sweet Skin". Together since March 2010, the trio of Austin Taylor Tirado, Joel Plotnik and Nik Ewing, all California natives draw influence from an eclectic assortment of post punk and late 50s early 60s pop girl groups such as The Ronettes and The Crystals. While their influences may be diverse, the sounds of LESANDS fuse wonderfully together for an infectious and dreamy dance gems to be replayed again and again. Though relatively new to the scene, 2011 promises to bring big things as the group heads to SXSW later in March beginning a national tour.
Aaliyah - Alienated This is my video to the song 'Alienated' originally performed by Keri Hilson. When I first heard the song I immediately thought of Aaliyah's music video 'Rock The Boat' I think it is because the colour palette of 'Rock The Boat' is blue, and the word 'Alienated' connotates 'feeling blue' so yeah (Learnt that kinda thing in English lmao) I love this video, I think the more I make these kind of videos the better I get. I think this kinda thing is a lot harder and more creative than my remixes. I hope you like it! I should be making a remix soooon though, I just cannot think of any good songs to mix :\ COMMENT RATE SHARE!
Doll Face 1st segment of Dolls R Us digital photo mixed with music project to music from a lankan song called ma dase wedana - it is refelective a little melancholy . but the pieces in the project will move up to up beat with the different segments. project was Dec 08 to May 09 e first segment of Dolls R Us. Doll Face digital photos mixed with lankan song Ma Dase Wedana(roughly translates to pangs in my eyes ie literally pain in my eyes but as songs go the song connotates to mean that there is saddness in the eyes do to a broken heart while other persons eyes have love smiles --i think the song is about unrequited love-but the singer says there is no hard feelings about rejection) the project starts melancholy but will move to an upbeat pace as the segments continue. wanted to use a sad song because i felt sad about romantic situations and thought this song reflected what i wanted to express about that aspect then as the segements move up the scale I can use lively songs to express the joy and other aspects of this digital project where the face i& eyes are used to convey emotion or reflect feelings. i like the lyrics of this song

The Terminator Opening Title Sequence Opening credits to The Terminator (1984), James Cameron's iconic nightmarish sci-fi action thriller, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton and Michael Biehn. Here, two sets of transparent letters, initially appearing too close to make out, pass each other and eventually form the title. The credits come in the form of text typed out on a computer screen, the square cursor being a recogniseable 80s hallmark. Along with both these fonts, composer Brad Fiedel completes the technological throughline, with his electronic score, of which this signature theme connotates the clanking metal of the Terminator itself.
