That means that if you gave the battery a sufficient rest periodically, you could run the device in excess of 65 hours on one 9 volt battery.

2011 Newman Motor (Commutator 50% Complete) (: 01183 = days since my first newman motor :) 1) I'm having some problems with the brush contacts. Carbon brushes must be under pressure for low resistance contact, and I'm having problems with there not being enough pressure on the wheel. I have also had problems with there being too much vibration on the springs, which can cause them to snag on the commutator. So I am only using carbon brushes on the shaft now. I bought plastic springs and some metal plates which I will use to create contacts for the wheel. Metal-to-metal contact is theoretically helpful for generating the Newman effect by causing a sharper spike. 2) To avoid shipping charges again, I must get some of older legos (from when I was a kid) for extra 2x2 blocks to clean my commutator up, because some of the new ones I got are stuck too hard because of the glue I used. 3) I did have the machine running with the small fan before January was over, but the alignment was bad, the coils were too far apart, and the contacts were moving too much. Despite that, the motor would run with no load 200 rpm and 90 rpm with the small fan load on only 50 volts of rechargeable batteries which I have not recharged since 6 months ago. According to the digital meter, the currents were around 0.03 amps. The ***og meter gave about the same reading as well. This is without corrections, so stay tuned!

Newman Motor Replication- Brushless Commutator Just a quick update on my Newman motor replication. My goal here was to reduce friction and I was tired of adjusting the commutator all the time. My concern with going with a brushless commutator was that it would somehow reduce the back emf. I installed a neon bulb to verify that I'm still getting output from the coil. I also took this time to add more wire to the coil, I added aprox 500 more feet (700 feet was initial run) for a total of 1200 feet total (which is still not enough) The new commutator is made from a Reed type switch taken from an alarm system. It's triggered by a small magnet that I mounted to a hard drive platter. I simply timed the magnet to cross the reed switch turning the power on when I want it to. Nice thing is, it's now fully adjustable! In this video the motor is drawing aprox 40 milliamps while lighting a neon bulb. In my next video I will be removing the generator I made on the end to try and get rpms up to charge a bank of caps and or a battery.

Joseph Newman Motor (without special commutator) This is my recreation of Joseph Newmans motor but without the special commutator (I will build that later). This is an amazingly easy motor to build. I made the whole thing in 2 days, about 8 hours of work. Each of the 2 coils has 260 turns of #28 copper magnet wire. At this point this device is simply a very efficient electric motor. Its not until the special commutator is added to the device that it becomes something more than just an electric motor. The key to this lies in pulsed DC electricity.
