Communities of Resistance (1/6) interview with Peter Lamborn Wilson AKA Hakim Bey in his home in May 2009 Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5 Part 6 -- Technology, the triumph of capital, what I call the technopathocracy, the rule of sick machinery, what looked like the absolute triumph of neo-conservative / neo-liberal global capitalism that suddenly, it was no longer possible to even criticize capitalism, suddenly this was just like water or air, now it's to be a given in our society. And the internet, and other forms of modern communication technology, although most people seem to think that this increases community, in my view, it destroys it. Because community, to me, is based on physical reality, not on communication devices. And when I hear things about the internet community, it just makes me want to puke! It's like talking about the law enforcement community, which is another favourite phrase of American journalism, as if these are all kindly neighbours lending cups of sugar to each other. This is a ***ing armed occupation force! That we pay out of our own pockets -- help the police, beat yourself up! And of course, America is at the forefront of this. We started the whole television-automobile-suburban culture, which its alienation, and the fact that you don't know who you're living next to. This is not society! This is the breakdown of society. This is atomization...

Communities of Resistance (2/6) interview with Peter Lamborn Wilson AKA Hakim Bey in his home in May 2009 Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5 Part 6 -- Now why is Europe different from America in this respect, I asked many Europeans to explain it to me. The conundrum is, in America, you've got 50-60% of the people attend church. In Europe, it's like 2%. Why this huge difference? So I asked, every time I had a chance to meet an intelligent European, I would ask them, and I finally got some interesting answers, which were not what I expected. I asked this French person once, I said, "Is it the cafe? Is that your social glue?" "No, not anymore, not really." I said, "Well, what is it?" And he said, "Well, first of all, all European countries are small and they speak different languages. So if you move to a new job, you don't move 5000 miles away like you do in America. You move 200 miles away, you can still come and see the parents on the weekend, or the cousins, whatever. So the extended family still means a lot more in Europe than it does here. In America, the extended family was broken up long ago, largely by the forces of capital. It's easy, as someone who grew up in the academic world I know this very well, you get a job offer in North Dakota with tenure track, you go! And if you never see your family, your parents or your cousins again, pffft! That's life. There's always e-mail, to stay in touch with e-mail...

4. Communities: Key Institutions and Relationships Early Modern England: Politics, Religion, and Society under the Tudors and Stuarts (HIST 251) Professor Wrightson begins by discussing how modern perceptions of the 'traditional' community have informed the manner in which the early modern social landscape is discussed. From here he moves on to address the lived reality of community and social bonds in the period. The roles that the intertwined ideas of lordship and tenancy, custom, neighborliness and social 'credit' played in rural manors and parishes are examined, as are urban institutions like the guilds, and relationships of kinship more generally. Professor Wrightson argues that the social bonds of community and neighborliness were indeed key features of early modern society and could occupy a pivotal position in people's lives, but also warns that communities could also be restrictive and riven by conflicts and tensions. While recognizing the importance of bonds of mutual obligation, we must not sentimentalize them. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Community 08:24 - Chapter 2. Authority 18:32 - Chapter 3. Lowkey - Defend the Muslim Community Launch meeting of Kafa - Enough a Campaign to defend muslim communities. --------------------------------------------------- Founding Statement: Muslims in Britain face attacks on many fronts. A broadly based campaign is being launched to confront the growth of racist attitudes towards Muslims and rising governmental and state harassment. It is supported by Muslim organisations, MPs, trade unionists, prominent members from the world of arts and media, church representatives Founding Statement Muslims in Britain are facing attacks on many fronts. These include: * The high-profile arrests under terror legislation of Muslims who are subsequently released without charge, creating a climate of fear and harassment; * An increase in violent attacks on Muslims in the streets and on Muslim places of worship; * The targetting of Muslims by the far-right British National Party; * Aggressive policing of Muslims on demonstrations, apparently designed to deter them from participating in peaceful protests; * The racist misrepresentation of Muslim views and practices in the mass media; * The political harassment of Muslim leaders by government ministers. These and other developments threaten to create a climate of hostility towards Muslims in Britain in contradiction to traditional tolerance and damaging to community cohesion. We believe that all people should come together in support of Muslims in Britain, and not leave them to confront these challenges alone. We call ...

Building Better Communities Professor at University of California Irvine, Elizabeth Cauffman, describes the focus of her research into what gets kids out of crime. Her research has not only delved into this subject but has also impacted legislation dealing with the death penalty and life without parole of juvenile defenders. Elizabeth Cauffman, Ph.D. Professor - Department of Psychology and Social Behavior - Department of Education My name is Elizabeth Cauffman I'm in the psychology and social behavior department in the school of social ecology. The main focus of my research is on adolescent development and how kids change and how they develop over time and that really informs or provides the court with a foundation for better understanding of how to treat kids within the system. So a lot of my work is on when should kids be tried as adults, are they competent to stand trial, what are the right responses the justice system should have to kids during this developmental time period. So a lot of my research centers on if adolescents are so smart, why do they do such stupid things. A lot of kids end up making very immature decisions and better trying to understand what that disconnect is, so recent advances in neuroscience have shown that the brain is continuing to develop up until the age of 25 and that is particularly in the area of the prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for impulse control, planning, future orientation. Given that this is the last part of the brain to develop, it's ...

What Defines a Community? Scholars have argued for a long time about whether online groups can be considered communities. Of course, there are many different types of online groups, some of whom consider themselves a community and some who do not. Some people attribute Internet-based interaction to breaking up local communities. But as Wellman (1996) points out, for many people in the United States, people's strongest social ties have not been local for quite some time. He argues that industrial forces have been changing the composition of our social networks over the course of the last hundred years--long before the Internet appeared on the scene. In conducting online research among video sharing site participants, I've noticed that YouTube is vast with people relating positive and negative experiences they have had on the site. But what is particularly interesting to me is that in discussing whether or not YouTube feels like a community to them, the interviews revealed what the individuals defined as the characteristics of community. To me this is an important part of the video. Many different definitions of community are mentioned in this video both in words and images. Can you identify them? Which definitions seem most persuasive to you? This footage was taken at the SouthTube meeting in Georgia on September 22-23, 2007.
