The Sword 2/6 In a confusing and ambiguous world, nothing makes more sense than a good, old-fashioned sword fight. An object of great complexity, yet one with a singular use in mind - it is designed to kill. The word "sword" comes from the Old English sweord, cognate to Old High German swert, Middle Dutch swaert, Old Norse sverð and Old Frisian/Old Saxon swerd, from a Proto-Indo-European root *swer- "to wound, to cut". The Germanic peoples have manufactured and used metal bladed weapons from the Bronze Age onwards. The sword developed from the dagger when the construction of longer blades became possible. The early swords typically had long and slender shaped blades intended for thrusting. Later swords were broader and were both cutting and thrusting weapons. Swords from the Nordic Bronze Age from ca. the 13th century BCE show characteristic spiral patterns. The two swords found with the Nebra sky disc (ca. 1600 BCE) are shown to be a combination of Apa type swords and the Northern European Sögel type swords. Swords made of iron appear from the Early Iron Age, but do not become widespread before the 8th century BCE. Eventually smiths learned that by adding an amount of carbon in the iron, they could produce an improved alloy (now known as steel). By quenching and tempering, swords could be made that would suffer much less damage, and would spring back into shape if bent. Facebook Treasure Isle Energy Packs Guide Link: This is a complete video guide on how to get energy packs in Facebook's game Treasure Isle, created by Zynga. It's short and sweet. Treasure (from Greek θησαυρος; thesaurus, meaning "a treasure of the chest", is a cognate) is a concentration of riches, often one which is considered lost or forgotten until being rediscovered. Some jurisdictions legally define what constitutes treasure, such as in the British Treasure Act 1996. The phrase "blood and treasure" or "lives and treasure" has been used to refer to the human and monetary costs associated with various (usually state-initiated) endeavours such as space exploration or war. A buried treasure is an important part of the popular beliefs surrounding pirates. According to popular conception, pirates often buried their stolen fortunes in remote places, intending to return for them later (often with the use of treasure maps). One of the more famous pirates known to have done this was William Kidd[contradiction],[2] who is believed to have buried at least some of his wealth on Long Island before sailing into New York. Kidd had originally been commissioned as a privateer for England, but his behavior had strayed into outright piracy, and he hoped that his treasure could serve as a bargaining chip in ...

Dundas selects a limited number of cognate groups (not all of them, since timing does not allow for this) and explains the relationship between these words in all three languages, paying particular attention to vowel and consonant mutations in the middle of words and also to changes at the end of those words.

What Islam is all About What Islam is All About? The term "Islam" come form the root SLM . Arabic Salām (سَلاَمٌ), Maltese Sliem, Hebrew Shalom (שָׁלוֹם), Ge'ez salām (ሰላም), Syriac šlama (ܫܠܡܐ) are cognate Semitic terms for "peace", deriving from a Proto-Semitic *šalām-. The word salām is used in a variety of expressions and contexts in Arabic and Islamic speech and writing. Al-Salam is one of the 99 names of God in the Qur'an, and also a male given name in conjunction with abd. Abd Al-Salam translates to Slave of Al-Salaam (ie Slave of Allah the All-Peacable.) In Hebrew, the equivalent of the word is Shalom. It is also the root word of the names Solomon (Süleyman), Selim, etc. The Koine Greek New Testament text uses eirēnē (εἰρήνη) for 'peace',[1] which perhaps[citation needed] represents Jesus saying 'šlama'; this Greek form became the Northern feminine name Irene. In the Epistles, it often occurs alongside the usual Greek greeting chairein (χαίρειν) in the phrase 'grace and peace'. However, comparison of the Greek Septuagint and Hebrew Masoretic Old Testament texts shows some instances where shalom was translated instead as soteria (σωτηρια, meaning "salvation"). Arabic, Maltese, Hebrew and Aramaic have cognate expressions meaning "peace be upon you" used as a greeting: Arabic As-Salamu ʿAlaykum (السلام عليكم), this expression is used to greet others and is an Arabic equivalent of "hello". The appropriate response to such a greeting is "and upon you be peace" (wa `alaykum as-salām ...

Learn French, Spanish and Italian: An Introduction to Cognates by Lingua Genesis - Part 1 Carl Dundas describes here just how useful it can be to be familiar with cognate groups. He refers here to the meaning of the terminology and gives examples of ways in which native speakers of English can predict and usually guess correctly the meanings of words with particular endings in Spanish. In part two, he looks at further cognates, in Spanish and Italian, establishing links between word categories in all three languages.

Shalom Aleichem - Shalawat Global Hebrew and Arabic mixed on medley (sholawat) by KiaiKanjeng. Property of Progress Yogyakarta. Shalom aleichem (or sholom aleichem) is a greeting version in Hebrew, literally meaning "Peace be upon you." The appropriate response is "Aleichem shalom," or "Upon you be peace." This form of greeting was traditional among the Ashke*** Jews communities of Eastern Europe. However, it is very similar to the Arabic-language greeting used by many Muslims throughout the world, assalamu alaikum. The Christian Maltese phrase, sliem ghalikom is cognate with both Arabic and Hebrew equivalents. The greeting is used in plural - so as to greet multiple people - even when greeting a lone individual. One religious explanation for this is that one greets both a body and a soul. But it ought to be noted that many plural Hebrew words are used in reference to something singular. Shalom could be also interpreted as "The Peace": a peace personally felt, a deep calmness and mental balance, which is said to come to those who appreciate God. Friday night Shabbat welcoming song. Shalom Aleichem is also a traditional song sung Friday night at the beginning of Shabbat, the Jewish Sabbath. In this case the words are used to welcome in the angels who accompany a person home on the eve of the Sabbath. It can be sung with many different melodies, but it is always sung with great happiness and joy. According to the Ashke*** tradition, the song in Hebrew language ...
