Clement Page - "Tiny Pain", 2 mins, single screen, 16mm, mastered to DVD, 2005 . Clement Pages 16mm film, entitled Tiny Pain (2005), is a filmic evocation of this naturally occurring uncanny psycho physical state. Based on the reports of a real-life sufferer from Sleep Paralysis, this short film intensely echoes the claustrophobic atmosphere of cloying dread and steadily increasing panic as the paralysis spreads and the hallucinations intensify.... When we are in the REM stage of sleep, 1 that stage associated with the most vivid and visually oriented dreams; there is a complete loss of muscle tone in the major muscle groups of the body. We are effectively paralyzed. The accepted theory behind this natural and universal phenomenon is that a state of paralysis is induced in the body so that we cannot act out the content of our dreams- consequently exposing ourselves to danger and damage. If this physiological mechanism did not exist, everyone would sleepwalk every time they dreamt. The mind, being fully involved in the dreamworld, is not normally aware of the phenomenon of nocturnal paralysis. However, in a small percentage of individuals, perhaps ten to fif*** percent, a disturbing psychophysical syndrome occurs: Isolated Sleep Paralysis (ISP), 2, commonly known as Petit-Mal in the West. In this instance, the sleeper gains consciousness while the body is still in a state of paralysis. Not only is this terrifying because the subject believes themselves to be truly paralysed, generally engaging in desperate but usually futile attempts to move, or ...

Emperor X -- "Sig Alert" CARMAGEDDON! This is a video for "Sig Alert" made in commemoration of the closure of Interstate 405 between Interstate 10 and Ventura Boulevard on the weekend of July 16th and 17th, 2011. Director of photography: Stephanie Gonot Dancers: Sarah Brin Alina Nguyen Omar Romero CR Matheny "Sig Alert" We deplooyed in annoying cloying defenseless staggering hordes. We advanced unencumbered and free. We ran out of grenades. All the lamps on the 405 were knocked out. It was freezing and no one could see. Hold up! Hold up! Our rent's not paid, and all Westwood's on lockdown. The med center generator's out. There's no honor in striking the wind. Blowing isotopes on the harbor freeway to win the short-term fight would form counter-productive debris. "Hold up!" the congregation sang. "Revival! Hosanna! We have no systems left to shock, and we're awestruck! Raise your hands, because there's hope that we'll hold them back at La Brea where we can cope with an influx of new refugees from the war!" Hold up! Hold up! Alarming ping and aplastic anemia held your shoulders down. Your girlfriend laughs at the tag on your sleeve. Note: Omar Romero, the dancer with the awesome mask, recently emerged healthy and victoriously from a battle with aplastic anemia. Much of this song was slant-inspired by unrelated things like Los Angeles infrastructure, wrecked relationships, and recurring unstoppable daydreams of alternate universe urban combat. But it was also slant-inspired by ...

MAC Marcel Wanders - First Impressions/Review and Swatches Air of Style ($30.00 for 0.07 fl. oz.) is a sweetened floral with a strong pull of jasmine. It has an initial strength, but it dries down to something incredibly subtle--probably too light. I'm glad it does weaken quickly, though, because it is rather cloying at first sniff. It's not a groundbreaking scent; despite the abundance of notes, it is has a rather simple result. I have had readers in the past note that Air of Style is reminiscent of Michael Kors, but I don't own it, so I couldn't say for sure. I applied it two hours ago, but the majority of the scent has wafted away. Full Review: MAC Sheer Mystery Powder ($60.00 for 0.56 oz.) is described as "an ultra-fine, super sheer, and very sophisticated pressed powder ... "Mysteriously" silky-soft in texture, glides on to give skin a velvety matte, slightly luminous and altogether flawless finish." There are only two shades available: Light and Medium Plus. They used to release a shade called Dark Secret, which was more appropriate for darker skin tones. Full Review: MAC Marcel Wanders Lip Glosses ($22.00 for 0.09 oz.) include four new, exclusive, and limited edition shades: Aleydis (fuchsia), Beatrix (golden ***), Gertruyd (blackened red), and Mary (light gold). Cold Comfort In this picture i wear clothes i don't recognize, in a year that is an alien country, and a house that is a strangers. There is no thought of going back, only knowledge that time has gone, the same way as the money. Sowing doubts to scenes and memories long gone, and a viewpoint opposite, juxtapose to the bird that sings, not for an answer, but because it has a song. Now the weakened winter is broke and bankrupt, of all its chilly woes and snows, as the comfortable house stands proud and empty, like the fool at the exchange, in his loud suit and pea*** hair. Would a grand disaster that kissed heaven know, of a time when its victims were young and care-free? Twisting ignorance to knowledge through the years, invisible truths soaking through the blanket of time. Cloying envy is a desert of the soul, emptying and temporary as the failed relationship, knowing people can be such hell, so little gravity makes the distance inevitable. So days refrain from depth and meaning, the pretty prison cocoons the soul day by day, and i am alas drawn back home, back in time, to songs pictures and a glass of something cold; comfort. Moonlight Towers - Can't Shake It I love it when I get good drummer footage. I had heard of this Austin Band many times but this was the first time I saw them. It won't be the last. Look what people are saying about Moonlight Towers: James Stevens' vocals are wistful without sounding weepy, comfortable but not cloying, and his rhythm guitar provides a solid foundation for Jacob Schulze, who's even more adept with a six-string than a ***tail shaker. Jason Daniels' bass can be either punchy or unobtrusive, or both should the song call for it. And drummer Richard Galloway hits the skins with all the force in his burly frame, while contributing backup vocals that belie it.

Kate Nash on London riots "When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love have always won. There have been tyrants, and murderers, and for a time they can seem invincible, but in the end they always fall. Think of it...always." — Mahatma Gandhi With the tenebrous fires of lunacy all but burnt out in London, many have been left scared and homeless. Kate Nash has joined philanthropic civilians in the clean-up and aid recovery. She told us more than 30 families are now living in Tottenham leisure centre. Their homes were destroyed by mindless delinquents during the riots. These terrible events have not made conspicuous the black heart of London, but a veneer of evil, and equally unsettling, an abandoned conscience. If left to their devices would violence be cloying? Or would they have us return to a dark and bygone austerity? Only the cores of the douche-bags' bellies holds the answer. We'll let Kate Nash explain some of the ways she's helping restore London both materially and mindfully.....

Something Weird Honeymoon of Terror Some newlyweds go to Niagara Falls. Some to Hawaii. But Frank and Marion spend their Honeymoon of Terror on a deserted island being chased by a psychotic, hornier than-hell lumberjack. Though they spend their wedding night at a Vegas motel, Marion wants to honeymoon someplace "where they can be completely alone." Frank suggests Thunder Island, a deserted isle in the middle of a lake which, conveniently, is "miles from nowhere." They then get a case of first-night jitters so cute and cloying that you'll be praying some kind of lunatic madman will be waiting for them on the island. Fortunately, that's exactly the case. - ***y Shockers from the Vault Vol. 23

The Turnpike - Suzannah Johannes - Part 1 In her few short months on the Lawrence music scene, Suzannah Johannes has made a big splash. Teaming up with Josh Adams and Dave Wetzal of Ghosty hasn't hurt her any either, nor has her easy and approachable manner. Her quiet but confident songs are introspective but not cloying, and her voice builds up steam with every show. Turnpike host Tim vonHolten shares a toddy by the fire with the toasty chanteuse before her Brandon Woods Retirement Home debut.

Reyli Barba- Fe Former Elefante vocalist Reyli Barba's second solo album continues where his celebrated 2004 release EN LA LUNA left off, with achingly romantic, hook-filled songs, sophisticated pop/rock arrangements, and just a hint of the edge that inspired his last band's "Latin alternative" tag. Barba's smooth, sweet vocals (reminiscent of Cat Stevens) are seductive but never cheesy or cloying.

Season 2, Episode 3: Hannah Peel - "Cailin Deas Cruite Na Mbo" - The Crypt Sessions This week's Crypt Session comes from Hannah Peel. And folkin' marvellous it is too. Here at the Crypt, we love a bit of folk music. But such has been the magnitude of the genre explosion in Blighty over recent years that, from Tescos to Toyota adverts, you can barely escape the sound of one ethereally-voiced sylkie or another strumming whistfully on a mandolin and pining for the fjords. Let's be honest, it's getting hard to tell them apart. Liverpudlian multi-instrumentalist Hannah Peel stands out from the crowd. Hailed by Drowned In Sound as 'a genuine creative force in British folk music', Hannah breathes new life into the genre. Her magical debut album, The Broken Wave, elevates a neo-folk sensibility with sophisticated song structures, adventurous instrumentations and a pop mogul's appreciation of a great tune. As Q magazine put it, her songs are 'inventively arranged, sweet without being cloying [and] there's just the right hint of weirdness and mystery lurking beneath the fragile folk pop surface...in a word, charming.' Sporting collaborations with the likes of Tunng's Mike Lindsay and Nitin Sawhney, The Broken Wave has already garnered four star reviews from Uncut, Mojo and Q and prompted The Sunday Independent, The Irish Times, Mojo and Narc to flag Hannah as 'One To Watch' in 2011. How right they are. The Broken Wave is released today, 31st January. For more information, visit Hannah's MySpace page -

How to Make Spruce Gum This is the real thing! Spruce gum like it was made in 1850. I love to chew gum, but don't like the cloying sweetness and powerful flavorings of modern gums. Not to mention the chemicals. I remember being able to buy spruce gum at Plymoth Plantation and a few maple houses when I was a kid. When I tried to find an online retailer who sold gum, I had no luck. I had to resort to making it myself. There's little information available online on that subject. So I did a lot of experimenting and I now can produce a gum just like I remember from my childhood. I hope you find it helpful.

Chin Up Chin Up Music Video The music video for Chin Up Chin Up's "We Should Have Never Lived Like We Were Skyscrapers" on Flameshovel Records. This is the sound of Chin Up Chin Up, whose disarmingly resonant debut album "We Should Have Never Lived Like We Were Skyscrapers" is ready to carry you through autumn and beyond. Recorded by John Congleton (90 Day Men, The Roots, The Paper Chase) at Electrical Audio and Soma studios throughout July, "We Should Have Never Lived Like We Were Skyscrapers" proves that sentimental pop songs don't have to be cloying or trite. Meticulously layered with solid drums, keyboards, and warm guitar, these ten songs will wrap themselves around your mind and stay there all day. The band's history reaches back to 2001, when Jeremy Bolen and Nathan Snydacker formed Chin Up Chin Up (think optimism and perseverance, not exercise). The two guitarists were joined shortly thereafter by percussionist Chris Dye and bassist Chris Saathoff. In January 2002, the band released a self-titled EP, which inspired MOJO's call for readers to "meet your new favourite Chicago art-pop band." Later joined by keyboard player Greg Sharp, Chin Up Chin Up toured extensively, playing shows with the likes of the Appleseed Cast, the Mercury Program, Pedro the Lion, the American ***og Set, Broken Social Scene, Smog, and Pinback. Look for this video on Chin Up Chin Up re-released and enhanced self-titled EP, out on Flameshovel Records ().

Les Tripplettes de Belleville - Notável!!! This feature animation puts Disney to shame for all its brain-dead, middle-of-the-road, theme park-oriented, schmaltzy, claptrap nonsense that's popular with the masses in this world. Beyond the fact that this animation is all of stunning, beautiful, thought-provoking, funny, artistic and frightening enough to make anyone with talent doubt their worth, "Les Triplettes de Belleville" happily refuses to assault its audience with mind-numbing, cloying, useless, overrated, saccharin, and trashy music and songs by the likes of Elton John and Andrew Lloyd Weber. (How's that for hyphenating) It achieves as much as, if not more than, what Jacques Tati could do with real actors. It should make anyone who ever thought a stuffed animal or "Happy Birthday" balloons was tasteful, crawl into a corner where they belong.

Liz Phair - Everything To Me Music video by Liz Phair performing Everything To Me.

Rum baba - Original Italian Recipe Rum soaked cakes from the Neapolitan cookbook -- enjoy these boozy delights from GialloZafferano, Italy's #1 food website. Although the Neapolitan culinary tradition lays claim on this beautiful sweet, actually the baba comes from Poland and it can even boast about a royal background. The inventor of the renowned baba is in fact the king, or better the czar of Poland Stanislas Leczynski, who was a great gourmet and dabbled in creating always new recipes. It seems that the king didn't like particularly the kugelhupf, a typical Polish cake which he found too dry, even if it was served together with a sauce made with Madeira wine, sugar and spices; actually, he found it so dry, that he couldn't eat it anymore! Legend has it that the baba was created one day when Stanislas, tired of that cloying sweet, threw it to the other side of the table where by chance there was a bottle of rum. The sweet liqueur fell over and it gave off such a fragrance that the czar, after tasting, fell in love with it and, as a passionate reader of the "One thousand and one nights" called it Ali Baba, like a famous character of these tales. From the king's court, the baba was exported to France, in Paris, with the short name of baba, from whence it was then exported to Naples and cooked by the so-called monsù, who served the Neapolitan noble families. To prepare the baba, begin by melting the brewer's yeast in the lukewarm milk together with 2 teaspoons of sugar (1), stirring for a few moments with a ...

JEGA (from the "Displayed" interview series) Jega is just one man, Dylan Nathan, an architecture-school classmate of Richard James (Aphex Twin) and Mike Paradinas (µ-ZIQ). He shares with them many of the same musical concerns, but didnt get around to releasing his work commercially as quickly as they did. He released his first EP in 1996 on Skam (original home to Boards of Canada), and in 1998 released Spectrum on Paradinass Planet µ label (and, later, Matador). Spectrum was a jarring view across the landscape of electronic music, more rollercoaster than Sunday drive, resulting in the cloying label drill n bass. In contrast, Geometry flows smoothly and more melodically from vista to vista, merging staccato 808 rhythmic workouts, digital swing, ***og atmospherics, jittery electro-hop, and myriad other sounds into a dark and rather melancholy work. Unlike Spectrum, Geometry will be released simultaneously worldwide, and Jega will be making numerous visits to the US for live appearances throughout the year. Dylan is also a licensed pilot, BMX fanatic, computer hacker, and a professional animator, currently working on a computer-animated video for the title track. In Which we Serve This clip was edited by me from a DVD. It starts off with my titles then a couple of stills which show where Jack Combe is located in the crowd, followed by the actual clip itself. Dad always said he was in the film but we had trouble locating him, until Ian got a copy, then I did this bit of wizardry. Noel Coward mentions Combe (Coombe) but looks at someone else.I think the names were drawn out of a hat for the script, so he even gets a mention. This small vignette, is part of a major picture made during WWII. In Which We Serve is only one in a long list of propaganda films turned out by England and the United States during World War II. Based on the actual service record of a British destroyer recounted to Noel Coward by Lord Mountbatten, it advances the standard line of support for the war effort and follows a familiar pattern by combining the story of HMS Torrin, from shipyard to the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea, with the personal lives of its captain and crew. Within this context, the film has its reputation. If it seems, at times, cloying or overeager on its way to the message of the closing title ("God bless our ships and all who sail on them."), it remains significant not just as Lean's first attempt at directing an entire feature, but as a picture singled out for admiration by its contemporaries from among scores of similar efforts.

飞舞(灵异杀手)My Heart Will Go On MV The hands-down winner of the year's most cloying title, My Heart Will Go On has a surprisingly accurate moniker. Sadly, it only serves to hinder this hugely average flick from Mandarin Films. It's a standard potboiler about a hired killer and a woman - with a heart transplant thrown in. Nicky Wu is Leo (gag!), an aimless hitman who's soulful because he's played by a little Sky King. He has heart disease so he's due to bite it rather soon. When he wants out of the biz, his evil boss and henchman (Ma Tak-Chung) aim to take him out. Caught in the crossfire is a nice guy cop BB (Lawrence Ng) who's due to be married to a florist named Maggie (Ada Choi). BB's heart gets donated and wouldn't you know it, it ends up in Leo's chest cavity. The bad guys still want him dead, but he possesses a vial of deadly poison gas that they'll all kill for. If that wasn't enough, Leo's heart starts doing strange things to him. He begins to take on parts of BB's personality, and soon he's led to Maggie. This mixture of Heart Condition and The Killer has a reasonably far-fetched but watchable plot that's all but submarined by various parties. The title stinks in its origins, as we can only think about a big sinking boat. Worse, the film has terrible production values, starting with poor cinematography and an atrocious synthesized music score. It's also directed like complete crap until the second half, where the film improves by 800%. That's mostly due to the always welcome Ada Choi, but Raymond ...

Mega Man ZX Boss Rush - Hard Mode/No Damage/Level 4 Victory/ZX Saber only (1) Part 1 of 5. This is one I've meant to do for a long time, and never got around to practicing. ZX, although it's popularly passed over for its more polished sequel, is still my favorite of the two and one of my all-time favorite Mega Man games. It has a sense of style similar to X1, my all-time favorite game in the franchise. There's a real mood of the underdog standing up to a cloying threat, as opposed to the more 'can't-touch-me' badass going-through-the-motions that most latter games in any of the recent series have. The action is frenetic, the HX model is one of the single greatest mechanics to come of a Mega Man game, the stage design is big, non-linear and awesome, and the background/graphic design is gorgeous. More importantly, it poses something the Zero series forgot about in the latter games; a real challenge. This game's Hard Mode ranks up there with the worst the franchise has to throw at you. It brings some seriously threatening boss fights to the fray. The awesome introduction of weak-points means even the most pattern-heavy boss will make you sweat, and what's more, it just feels badass to slice a boss up tactfully and see that Level 4 Victory flash across the screen. This is a by-the-books boss rush for me, which means the game is gutted to its essentials. Aile remains in the ZX armor (after it becomes available) and uses only the saber (because the buster is one overpowered mother***er, and because I said so). Bosses are fought on Hard Mode (for the ...

Goodbye (original song) by Leonard I'm taking off my shirt and thinking all alone sitting on my unmade bed, I'm really quite tonight and I feel lifeless. Your cloying kisses both your caress and your finghers sliding slowly through my hair just now I understand they were not true another day another doubt on my shoulders in the end and when I hold you closed it's like having nothing in the hands and I'm wandering why I've never heard you cry or say how much I care but I know there's so much more they said it's paranoia but I had my reasons I don't know how to tell you I don't know any other way again except this song to say there's just one word tonight, that is goodbye 'cause another day another doubt on my shoulders in the end and when I hold you closed it's like having nothing in the hands and I'm wandering why it's hard but goodbye goodbye
