Armitage Gone! Dance - TWO THEORIES & DRASTIC CLASSICISM Part of Dance Umbrella 2011. Not seen in London since 1985, 80s wild child Karole Armitage returns to the festival with the revival of a classic from the punk era and a new work. Striking, elegant and dramatic, TWO THEORIES: QUANTUM & STRING is performed by the company of ten brilliant dancers, and explores the poetry underlying the pillars of 20th century theoretical physics. Armitage's signature work from 1981, DRASTIC-CLASSICISM, is performed to Rhys Chatham's clangorous score, played live by five musicians amongst the dancers. When this outrageously high-energy performance premiered in New York 30 years ago, it shocked audiences with its audacity, pairing classical movement with the raw energy of punk's wall of sound. Today its impact is no less striking.

Classical vs Baroque Compositional Strategies Have you ever wondered how artists design their pictures? An art teacher, considered to be adequate by at least some of his students, explains his theory about the two dominant forms of pictorial compostion, Classical versus Baroque design. He doodles and uses works by Da Vinci and Rubens to share the secrets of art.

Is modernism a continuation of classicism or is it a completely new begining? This was one of the debates recently discussed in our architecture school. The results of this debate was rather inconclusive. however it is was an interesting debate none the less. The team arguing that modernism was a continuation of classicism, described that all the literal manifestations of the modernism can be traced back to the recent past. For example Auguste Perrets use of concrete frame in Rue Franklin building 1903 in order to get a free plan. As well as this they discussed that much the porpotional systems used in modernist building were derived from classcism. The opposing team stated that Le Courbusier pushed the possibilies of the free plan with the other points simulataneously to their logical limits. thus creating a new spartial characteristic for modernism. They further went on to quote Le Courbusier from "towards a new architecture ", "the history of architecture unfolds itself slowly across the centeries as a modification of ornament but in the last fifty years steel and concrete bought new conquests". This debate continued for at least another hour. I hope people will reply to this post an continue the debate in this forum.

Chaos and Classicism: Art in France, Italy, and Germany, 1918-1936 View the online exhibition and more at Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum October 1, 2010—January 9, 2011 Trace the rebirth of classical beauty and order between World War I and II. Following the chaos of World War I, many artists found solace in traditional ideals such as purity, moderation, and the perfection of the human form. With over 150 works by 80 artists, including Balthus, Giorgio de Chirico, Jean Cocteau, Otto Dix, Hannah Höch, Fernand Léger, Henri Matisse, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Pablo Picasso, and August Sander, the exhibition explores this powerful spirit of renewal in painting, sculpture, photography, architecture, film, fashion, and decorative arts. This exhibition is made possible by support from the National Endowment for the Arts and The David Berg Foundation. The Leadership Committee is gratefully acknowledged.
