Like Hopper, Pierson creates works that are inherently cinematic in their scope and effects; both are primarily concerned with mood, atmosphere, and exhibit a particularly urban kind of melancholy. His greatest asset, however, is an almost overwhelmingly lush palette, which he uses to depict objects of desire or scenes that are unabashedly sensual and emotional. An excellent example of the artist's high-key chromaticism, The Lonely Life describes the unique brand of loneliness shared by the performer and the fan, both of whom (like ...

  • New York Times Square - Emanuela Gardner - video by Maria Teresa de Vito Emanuela Gardner, a New York City-based photographer, turns a discerning eye toward New York's Times Square in an exhibition entitled: THE NEW TIMES SQUARE -The ***ography of Global Media - opening at Merge Gallery on October 16, 2008. Writing of the exhibition, Ralph Engelman and Michael Pelias observed, Gardner's representations of the familiar landmark are incredibly stunning and disturbing. Traces of the old are disappearing and the Square's namesake, The New York Times, has departed. Now, in its place are shining monuments to the giant media conglomerates of the digital age, Disney/ABC, Viacom and News Corp, and the iconography of NASDAQ, the stock market of new media, overshadowing the old Big Board. Gardner, a master in the depiction of how light falls on objects, opens our eyes to a different spectacle and sensuality of monumental, glistening, modern buildings. The luscious and subversive photographs decode a new ***ography of consumerism. We recognize in Gardner's large format prints the hegemony of a Disneyfied pop culture and ultimately understand that lurking behind the façade of the new Times Square is a Faustian pact that has prostituted Times Squares authentic self to a consumer ideal. Emanuela Gardner made her reputation as a portrait photographer with photographs of Raoul Julia, Carl Bernstein, Jeff Koons, Leo Castelli and Walter Cronkite, to name a few. For the past five years, her work has evolved into color images. Gardner has captured the new ...

  • Andres Serrano at Yvon Lambert - September 4, 2008 In this show, titled "***", Serrano has created large chromogenic prints from photographs of various types of excrement. Anyone familiar with the artist will immediatly think of his most well known work, "Piss Christ" (a print of which is also on display in this exhibition), and will recognize that Serrano is no stranger to working with bodily substances. On the surface, of course, the subject matter can be evocative, as we are naturally conditioned to think of feces as something dirty and disgusting, something to be disposed of. After all, the term *** itself is a vulgar word. But the fact is, feces are a perfectly natural thing that every animal creates, and further it is created from within. In nature, animals typcially leave scat out in the open, where it can be examined for the study of animal behaviour. So, with these photographs we are invited to examine the sometimes beautiful forms that can arrise from this activity. The quality of Serrano's compositions highlights the unique forms and shapes that come about from that lowest of all creation, ***.
