  • The Orange Chromide / Etroplus maculatus - a cichlid from India I first kept this species 50+ years ago and have very fond memories of the feisty little cichlid with the sooty colored breast. Well, all this time later, I have them again - a colony of ten wild caughts. I keep them in brackish water and I have had several spawns over the last few months. They are closely related to the Paretroplus of Madagascar, both in appearance and behavior. The eggs hang like little grapes and are opaque, olive colored. They prefer to spawn in the shelter of a cave and will defend their eggs and fry vigorously. This is the first opportunity I've had to video a spawn since this time, they spawned on the outside surface of a pot that was at the front of the tank. This is one cool little fish!!

  • Orange and Silver Chromide spawn! My beautiful orange and silver chromides have spawned in their 50 gallon brackish aquarium! Their eggs are on little tiny stalks stuck to the glass wall. These fish are some of the few asian cichlids available in the aquarium trade. They spawned, tended their eggs and moved their fry to a large pit that they had dug in the substrate. The fry were numerous and very wiggly... we were so excited to see them grow. We had a 10 gallon brooder all set up with water from their parent aquarium and had a buyer set up to purchase them when they were about 1". Tragically, the extreme substrate movement stirred up a large amount of detritus (we have had problems keeping it stirred since our hermit crabs and nassarius snails keep getting picked off by the puffer fish in the tank) which caused a more extreme ammonia spike them I have ever seen before. We did an emergency water change and dosed the tank with a large quantity of beneficial bacteria (Nutrafin Cycle) but it was too late for the fry and the chromides. The pair of Knight Gobies died as well, but the 3 green spot puffers and many of the invertebrates survived. This is the only video I have of the parents and I will miss their beautiful colors and fascinating interactions.
