Chimpanzee Problem Solving by Cooperation A brief, interesting clip from National Geographic's "Ape Genius" documentary, demonstrating problem solving skills in chimpanzees, by requesting cooperation. Also shows chimpanzees providing assistance to humans, by noticing assistance is needed, and retrieving out of reach objects for their human companions. As time goes on, it becomes more and more obvious that the great apes are our evolutionary cousins. I would hope everyone viewing this would be able to share in my astonishment and awe at the brilliance displayed by these amazing creatures. More Information: sciencelinks.jp Transcript:

Lab Chimps Play in the Sun for the First Time Lab Chimps Play in the Sun for the First Time. These monkeys were caged/kept indoors their entire lives and have finally been allowed outside to play. Narration translation: Woman Narrator: They see for the first time in their lives, the sun. After decades in an experiment laboratory, this is the first step of the chimpanzees in to freedom. Man Narrator: They hugged each other, like they would say they were finally free. And then they laughed. One imagines being locked up for 30 years in an elevator, then to open the door with friends and say "I don't believe it." They have only seen people wearing protective clothing; they have never had regular contact. They never learned to climb, because they were brought to the laboratory as babies. Now they can finally get out. Woman Narrator: Most of the former 38 monkeys have spent the entire lives behind bars. Since 2002, they are now in an Austrian village, slowing being prepared a life in freedom. This moment was for both animal and people equally unique. Man Narrator: I saw a chimpanzee, who was starring completely fascinated at a butterfly. He knew it, from back when he was a small chimpanzee in the jungle, and now he can see them again. Woman Narrator: And the monkeys that were born in the laboratory are discovering everything for the first time. The air, the grass, the freedom.

What Separates Us from Chimps? As It Turns Out, Not Much Complete video at: fora.tv Neurologist Robert Sapolsky explores the genetic differences between humans and chimps, and describes the few genes that make our species unique. Our two species share over ninety-eight percent of the same genes, with only one major trait separating us from other primates: an abundance of neurons in the brain. "Take a chimp brain fetally and let it go two or three more rounds of division and you get a human brain instead," says Sapolsky. "And, out come symphonies, ideologies and hopscotch." ----- Dr. Robert Sapolsky discusses his work as professor of biology and neurology at Stanford University and as a research associate with the Institute of Primate Research at the National Museum of Kenya. His enviable gift for storytelling led the New York Times to print, "If you crossed Jane Goodall with a borscht-belt comedian, she might have written a book like A Primate's Memoir." Dr. Sapolsky's account of his early years as a field biologist. He is sure to dazzle and delight with tales of what it means to be human. - California Academy of Sciences Dr. Robert Sapolsky is a professor of Biology and Neurology at Stanford University. Laboratory chimps caged for 30 years are finally released to a sanctuary Like prisoners emerging from a lifetime behind bars, a group of chimpanzees step blinking into the sunlight. This is the first time they have felt grass under their feet and breathed fresh air for 30 years. A few of the chimps were born in captivity but most were kidnapped from African jungles as babies and flown to Europe, where they were locked in metal laboratory cages to be used in a long series of experiments. Their ordeal finally ended in September 2011 when 38 of the surviving chimps were released into a sanctuary in Austria called Gut Aiderbichl, allowing them to feel the nurturing contact of their fellow chimps after years of being separated by bars and bullet-proof glass. Lab Chimps Laugh And Hug At Taste Of Freedom Click Like to show your support of freedom to all animals ! The emotional moment a group of chimpanzees saw daylight for the first time after being kept in a laboratory for their whole lives has been caught on film. The video shows the animals edging out of the door hesitantly at first and looking curiously up at the sky, But they then appear to celebrate their new found freedom by hugging each other and laughing. The 38 chimps were taken from their mothers shortly after they were born and kept in a research facility in Austria. They were used for tests based on diseases such as HIV and hepatitis and kept in isolation They were rescued in 1997 after the pharmaceutical company behind the research was sold and taken to a farm where keepers have since tried to reintroduce them to the outside world. It is only now that experts felt the time was right and the chimps were ready to experience fresh air. Cruelty to animals must stop now !
