Qualitative ***ysis Cations I group Ag+ (3) Qualitative ***ysis is used to detect cations and anions. Group I of cations: Ag+, (Hg+)2, Pb2+ I group cations form white precipitates of various features with HCl. You can get white precipitate of AgCl back out of diamminesilver chloride solution [Ag(NH3)2]Cl adding eg nitric acid solution HNO3. Or, for access to this single video, go to: Naming chemical compounds can be tricky, and requires a little bit of knowledge about the trends and naming conventions. First, Professor Harman explains that how you name a compound will depend on the type of compound - whether it is an ion, molecular compound, acid, or base. For ions, the way you name the ion will depend on whether the compound is a cation or anion and whether or not it is monatomic, polyatomic, or a transition metal. Anions follow slightly more difficult naming conventions. Molecular compounds use Greek prefixes and will always start with the element furthest from Fluorine. Some molecular compounds have common names (such as water), and these are always used. Bases are simply named like ionic materials. Acids are named based on the suffix of the anion they are derived from. If the anion ends in -ate, the acid uses an -ic suffix. If the anion ends in -ite, the acid uses an -ous suffix. Taught by Professor Harman, this lesson was selected from a ...

Cations (Zn(II), Al(III), Cu(II), Fe(II) and Fe(III): Tested with NaOH One of several hundred video-tuitions in high school chemistry, available at Sodium hydroxide is added slowly and then in excess to solutions of these salts. The zinc (II) and Aluminium (III) form white gelatinous hydroxide precipitates that redissolve. Copper (II) forms a light blue hydroxide that does not redisssolve. Iron (II) and (III), respectively, form green and brown hydroxides that do not redissolve. Frank Scullion Production and Recordng: Frank Scullion

Cation Song Learn those cations! Lyrics: Everybody knows the cations, Everybody knows their names, Everybody knows what what I'm talkin' about, Everybody sees it that way. Aluminum is Al3+, Ammonium is NH4+, Chromium II Chromous is Cr2+, Chromium III Chromic is Cr3+, Cobalt II cobaltous Co2+, Cobalt III is Co3+, Yeah yeah yeah, Copper I Cu+. This is the cation song, We gotta know this, Again and again till we get it right, This is the cation song, You sing and you learn it, Again and again til we get an A, This is the cation song. Copper II cupric is Cu2+, Hydrogen H+ Hydronium H3O+, Iron II Ferrous is Fe2+, Iron III Ferric is Fe3+, Lead II is Pb2+, Yeah yeah yeah, Lead IV is Pb4+. This is the end of the song, But there's a few more left to go, This is teh cation song, Zinc is Zn2+. Now we know we'll get it right on the test, You know we can! Spoken part: Just remember Manganese II is Mn2+, And Manganese IV is Mn4+, Mercury I mercurous is Hg22+, Mercury II mercuric is Hg2+. Silver is Ag+, Nickel is Ni2+, Tin II is Sn2+, Tin IV is Sn4+, Cadmium is Cd2+, Now everybody knows the cations, Everybody knows their names, Now we'll get an A!
