Southern Tier CASK Night at The Ruck (9/30/11 in Troy, NY) You know I love Southern Tier - they're the best brewery in New York as far as I'm concerned. But I've never been able to find their stuff on cask - that is until last night when they had three of their beers in firkins - Pumking, 2XIPA, and Harvest. Jay of was also there and gave me his thoughts on these beers. Plus there's a special appearance by my new friend Barb who I hope to have as a guest reviewer on the show sometime. PS I have no idea what was up with that girl behind me with the headphones on. Who comes to a loud bar to listen to their iPod? I don't get it so don't expect me to explain it. "The Cask of Amontillado - Part 1" by Edgar Allan Poe (story reading) The Oxford English Dictionary gives this pronunciation of "amontillado" first, with the Spanish pronunciation as an alternative. Until recent years, English speakers did not imitate foreign voices when pronouncing foreign words: it was regarded as "affected" to do so. According to the OED, Don Quixote is pronounced "don quick sert" and there are no other pronunciations given. If you think a foreign pronunciation of "amontillado" is justified then why imitate a Spaniard and not an Italian? The story is set in Italy and they are Italians. This story was first published in the November 1846 issue of Godey's Lady's Book, this is one of the most chilling of horror stories. "Immolation" means sacrifice, usually by burning. I'm surprised that he didn't use "immuration" which means being walled-in. "Nemo me impune lacessit" means "Don't mess with me or you'll regret it" - or literally "Nobody touches me with impugnity" Amontillado is a medium sherry, fortified with distilled wine to give it a higher alcoholic content. Most wine wll only last a few days after opening but sherry lasts much longer. Thus wine would have to be bottled but sherry can be kept in a cask.
