The piece is in two movements entitled "Nighthawks" and "Freedom of Speech" based on the paintings by Edward Hopper and Norman Rockwell, respectively. Staple Gun (Again, be safe when using powers tools!) Altogether to make the small canvas in the video, it cost me about $5-$10 worth of materials. A canvas as tall as a person would cost about $15-20. Much better than store bought rates. You can also recycle and re-stretch old canvases to be eco-friendly. :D

Joe Panteliano plays the father, a struggling working class man whose wife (played beautifully by Marsha Gay Harden) has been diagnosed with schziophrenia. They have a child named Chris who is struggling to find his own identity while dealing with his mother's troubling illness. In the beginning of the film, we see Mary's attempts to connect with Chris through her artwork and his disappointment that she continues to paint the same scene over and over, a beach with a lighthouse. We come to discover through the movie that Mary holds onto this memory because it is one of the last times she was able to really be a mother to Chris. Mary, like many people with mental illness, believes she does not need her medication and stops taking it. Mary decompensates one night during a thunderstorm and becomes very paranoid and ends up accidentally hurting Chris. Mary is then taken to a hospital, where she stays for the remainder of the film. Stretching a 4' x 6' canvas Here I explain my method for building an armature for a 4' x 6' painting and stretching canvas over it. Note: I'm a relative beginner. I've only made a few canvases this large in my life. I posted this to help people who know less than me about building and stretching a canvas--if you know more than me, your helpful comments are appreciated, both for me and other viewers! For those who observed that several hours sounds like a long time, note that I'm using a hand-held staple gun. With a pneumatic staple gun, it would go about 10 times faster! (I just don't have one yet.) And thanks to those who pointed out that poplar is indeed not a hard wood. But in my experience, it is much much harder than pine, the only other wood I've used for this purpose. Thanks for watching! Amir baradaran, Act II: Behind the Canvas, On Marina Abramovic's The artist is present - The Other Artist Is Present- Baradaran returns to the table his face now concealed by a series of four overlapping canvases. Each is emblazoned with an enigmatic message. The first canvas, In/out, sets the tone as it refers to borders. The second message, I am a nurse from New Zealand appears to break Abramovics concentration for a moment, moved as she recognizes the reference to a persona she dons when traveling. Baradaran, unaware of the effect he has had on Abramovic, reveals the next canvas: a non resident alien a status familiar to both artists. The final layer, passing of the author, references Roland Barthes essay, The Death of the Author, which advocates the separation of the artist from his/her artistic creation. Baradarans infiltration makes the audience question: who is the performer? Who is in / out? For, in that moment, it is no longer simply her piece alone but has been subverted into a product of the artists shared passions. Baradaran pauses and then lays the canvases onto the table; he removes his wallet and an inkpad from his pocket, and ritualistically stamps the canvases with his fingerprints. In the overwhelming light of a sterile performance space, security guards seem ready to spring into action as Baradaran removes his hands from his pockets. The artist evokes the traumatic discomfort felt by a person detained at a security checkpoint.

This method for folding the corners is the cleanest, nicest-looking way I have found. It is a little tricky at first and takes some practice, but it's worth it!
Valentines Cricut Vinyl Canvas Project Valentines Canvas Vinyl Project In this Cricut vinyl project we are using a few small painters canvases from a local craft store. These little canvases are inexpensive and work great for more than just painting. First we want our canvas to be a different color, so well just use some acrylic paint and paint them black. Always wait for the paint to dry well before trying to apply vinyl. Wet paint and vinyl dont work well together. However these canvases are pretty porous and the paint will dry quickly. With the canvas painted we can set up and cut our vinyl to go on them. This particular project is geared towards Valentines day, but the idea can be adapted to any holiday or even just as a general decoration. We have chosen to use the font Arial for all the lettering on this project. We used Arial, Arial Black, and Arial Narrow. It is a simple clean font that is very recognizable. Design your lettering sizes to correspond to the size of your canvas. Programs like Sure Cuts A Lot allow you to set up a group of lettering within a specific size. This is very handy for a project like this, it takes out a lot of the guess work. We have used words associated with valentines day for this project.
