The Structure of Bone The Structure of Bone This is the structure of bone. Spongy or cancellous bone form the center bulk of all our bones. Its honeycomb structure keeps bone light, in contrast to the heavier, compact bone, which gives it strength. Bone cells or osteocytes are contained in spaces called lacunae. The minute projections of bone cells trail into adjoining channels known as c***iculi. Tissue fluid, which fills the lacunae, allows the transfer of materials between bone cells and capillaries. Haversian systems, each about one-sixtieth of an inch wide, make up the structure of compact bone. Each system is formed by a series of rings called lamellae, which are deposits of mineral salts and collagen fibers. Haversian c***s, which run through the center of each Haversian system, contain the blood and lymphatic vessels supplying the bone. Here arteries carrying oxygenated blood are shown in red. Veins carrying deoxygenated blood are shown in blue. The lymphatic vessels are shown in white. Three-dimensional tomographic reconstruction of lacuna from mouse tibia trabecula A novel hard transmission X-ray microscope ~TXM! at the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource operating from 5 to 15 keV X-ray energy with 14 to 30 mm2 field of view has been used for high-resolution ~30--40 nm! imaging and density quantification of mineralized tissue. TXM is uniquely suited for imaging of internal cellular structures and networks in mammalian mineralized tissues using relatively thick ~50 mm!, untreated samples that preserve tissue micro- and nanostructure. To test this method we performed Zernike phase contrast and absorption contrast imaging of mouse cancellous bone prepared under different conditions of in vivo loading, fixation, and contrast agents. In addition, the three-dimensional structure was examined using tomography. Individual osteocytic lacunae were observed embedded within trabeculae in cancellous bone. Extensive c***icular networks were evident and included processes with diameters near the 30--40 nm instrument resolution that have not been reported previously. Trabecular density was quantified relative to rod-like crystalline apatite, and rod-like trabecular struts were found to have 51--54% of pure crystal density and plate-like areas had 44--53% of crystal density. The nanometer resolution of TXM enables future studies for visualization and quantification of ultrastructural changes in bone tissue resulting from osteoporosis, dental disease, and other pathologies.

On seeing the X-Ray from lateral projection articular surface seems to be normal but x-ray from medial projection showed significant articular depression, thus both projections showed different pictures. This fact becomes very important when we used to do plating in calcaneum, we almost go through lateral approach, which can be misleading as we have shown from x-ray that's why we did surgery again after seeing x - ray from medial projection.Steps of closed reduction include, first we reduced the fracture with the help of fracture reducing forceps, then we applied K-Wire so as to give temporary fixation to the calcareous pieces. After that we permanently fixed the fracture with cancellous screw. In order to give immobilization to the ankle joint we need to fix it by external fixators. In order to do it we inserted k wire in all metatarsals, calcareous and tibia bone.
