1968 vs 2008, student activism then & now In the time leading up the 1968 presidential election, most Americans had turned against the war in Vietnam and support for the president was at a historic low. That public sentiment played out sometimes violently on college campuses across the nation including the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In 2008, polls show that attitudes toward the war in Iraq and the president match those of 40 years ago, yet the UW and other campuses are quiet.

Liberal bias on college campuses may prevent fair debate Having a debate on Iraq at the University of Virginia may be a bad idea because college campuses tend to have a liberal bias, particularly the student body. This kind of debate also has the danger of turning into a debate over vague, idealistic values as opposed to the more important issues of military tactics. The war in Iraq was a broad maneuver in larger Middle East strategy by Bush that has gone wrong and is dragging out. But our interests and the world's interest in peace may be hurt by withdrawing.

During the Israeli Offensive against the people of Gaza, Dr. Mads Gilbert and Dr. Erik Fosse were the only two foreign doctors allowed into the region, spending days and nights at the busy and over-crowded Al-Shifaa Hospital in a region forbidden to the rest of the world. With a complete blockade on Gaza, including medical aid and media, Dr. Mads Gilbert became a common face, keeping the world informed of the atrocities taking place in the virtual prison known as Gaza. As such, he was seen on Al-Jazeera, BBC, CBS, ABC, CNN and more. Dr. Mads Gilbert described his experience in Gaza as the most horrific, terrible thing he has ever witnessed. A long time activist and solidarity worker for the rights of Palestinians, he co-authored the book "Eyes in Gaza" with Dr. Erik Fosse on the realities of this offensive. And now, Dr. Gilbert has kindly taken the time to embark on an SPHR North American tour- on 16 different campuses- to continue sharing his experiences and the stories of Palestinians silenced. This tour is taking place approximately one year after 1300 Palestinians perished, with thousands more injured, and the stories and experience that Dr. Gilbert will share is like no other. As a ...

Indoctrinate U - Our Education/Their Politics(Part 1/10) Once I saw the film, I had to support it by purchasing the DVD. It cost me about $22.00 but the film is independant so it's support, rather than a rip-off. You can get your own downloaded copy for about $10 when you visit the website store: indoctrinate- Indoctrinate U, Evan Coyne Maloney's much anticipated documentary exposing the anti-intellectual, intolerant culture of our nation's campuses, is finally here. Early versions of the film won prizes and international critical acclaim. Maloney has been called "a Michael Moore, only with integrity." And the film has been dubbed "a call to action" that will "shock the conscience of Americans in the best sense, through exposure to truth and logic." Now, just in time for graduation, the film America needs to see has arrived. Released in Spring, 2007, Indoctrinate U is already creating a major buzz. The film was featured on Hannityís America Sunday, March 18, 2007. Advance media coverage of Indoctrinate U and its short film predecessor Brainwashing, has been enormously positive and encouraging. London's Daily Telegraph has called the film "as slick and incisive as anything by Michael Moore," and predicts that it "will lay bare the hypocrisy of what he calls the most self-righteous people in America - and possibly cost them millions of dollars." The New York Sun calls Maloney the "conservative answer to Michael Moore," and observes that the film is expected "to emerge as a breakout theatrical hit." The Chronicle of Higher ...

Empty Holsters Courts and legislatures across the country are deciding whether students and professors can carry guns on campus--but your university might be preventing you from being part of the debate. Since more than 30 people were murdered at Virginia Tech, debate has raged over guns on campus. Yet, on far too many campuses, FIRE sees censorship instead of real discussions about the merits of permitting students and professors to be armed. These are the stories of students who joined the battle of ideas in order to debate issues of personal safety--and ended up fighting to maintain their First Amendment rights.
